Redknapp to target Van Nistelrooy, Babel and Upson

HARRY REDKNAPP is determined to be the Premier League’s busiest manager in January - after launching a shock bid to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Tottenham boss Redknapp has got his sights set on van Nistelrooy, Liverpool outcast Ryan Babel and West Ham defender Matt Upson.

Wheeler dealer Redknapp is desperate to launch a major shake-up of his squad in January with Robbie Keane, David Bentley, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Alan Hutton all on their way out of White Hart Lane.

But they will be shipped out to fund another big Tottenham spending spree as Redknapp has been told by chairman Daniel Levy that he must sell before he can buy.

Redknapp is desperate to revive former Manchester United striker van Nistelrooy’s career in the Premier League by brokering a cut-price deal with Real Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy, 33, wants to quit Real Madrid in January after falling down the pecking order and the Spanish giants may be willing to let him go at the right price.

Redknapp, however, may have to convince his chairman to sign van Nistelrooy because of the Dutchman’s injury record.

But Redknapp said of van Nistelrooy recently: “He’s a top player, if he’s anywhere near fit I’m sure he can still play for a while. He would come over here and score, he was always has done.

“Tottenham is a big club - we shouldn’t be afraid to compete with these clubs in the transfer market. But what would I do? I have Crouch, Keane and Defoe and Pav. If I got Van Nistelrooy, I give myself another problem.”

Uggg! The mirror.
Why is trying to sign RVN a shock seeing as we spent most of last window trying to sign him?

If we do offload Pav, RVN isn't a bad replacement in the short term future, he's experience would be very welcome.

i'm not too sure in this, even in his last season at man U he was clearly nowhere near his best and this is a couple of years and a big injury later.

Do you mean that last season at Man U where he played 35 league games, about 15 of which were off the bench (Ferguson started phasing him out in the second half of that season), yet he still managed 21 league goals?

Yeah, that was awful. And his next two seasons at Madrid where he scored 25 in 37, then 16 in 24, those were pathetic. A shadow of himself.

You are right about the big injury. It screwed him over for most of last season and the beginning of this. Yet in his 6 league games he still managed 4 goals, and he has scored in his only appearance this season. He just happens to have 160m worth of new talent to compete with up front, as well as the always impressive Higuain.

The man will score goals, it's guaranteed. He is a machine, he is to goalscoring what Federer is to cross court back hands and what Calzaghe was to 3 jab combinations. He would kill two birds with one stone if we signed him because he would be another striker apart from Defoe who was capable of scoring, and he would be another striker apart from Crouch who would offer some physical presence.

The day I sniff at the possibility of signing Ruud van Nistelrooy is the day I register with a self help clinic for the mentally weak.

no idea if RVN is up to it

but Harry - do we really have Pav?

sure he's on the wage bill - but in case you haven't noticed, you never play him :)

and rightly so

effectively we're down to 3 strikers - and as i don't rate the diddy combo we're ridiculously reliant on Crouch (IMHO)

QED - we need another big/powerful striker be it RVN or whoever

No i mean that his allround game became almost nothing, he became almost exclusively a box player, some may argue that is what we're looking for, and I think it's very hard for a team like us to accomodate a player like that.

RVN would be good as a short term solution, he's a winner, has experience and won't complain too much about being on the bench I think.

If he wont complain about being on the bench then why leave Madrid? I'm sure their benches are more comfortable and the lifstyle is better.
The only reason he will leave Madrid is if he is guarenteed first team football.

Not what we need. Too similar to Defoe (in spite of his height), rather than a proper #9.

He and Keane might work as a partnership but after 18 months without a working partnership we need to think seriously about buying a striker who compliments, not who is simply a good player.

Harry Redknapp was last night negotiating a deal to take Ruud van Nistelrooy on a loan deal to Tottenham.
The Spurs boss has moved into pole position in the race to snatch the 33-year-old striker who is no longer wanted at Real Madrid.

He will be struggling to complete the move in time for the 64-cap Holland forward - still an Old Trafford legend after scoring 95 goals in 150 games when he was at Manchester United - to play in Wednesday night’s huge Premier League match at Liverpool.
But Redknapp believes that adding the Dutchman’s experience and firepower will be a turning point in the battle to snatch fourth place - and a spot in next season’s Champions League - away from the Anfield club.
Redknapp was in a swanky London restaurant on Monday night with Van Nistelrooy’s agent, Rodger Linse, setting out his visions of the future at White Hart Lane.

Linse, who earlier in the day rejected approaches from Turkish giants Galatasaray, is still exploring other options for his client.
But Tottenham’s boss is hoping that his own record of giving other veteran stars a great swansong to their careers will convince Van Nistelrooy to join a high-powered attack of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch and Robbie Keane.

Loan for the rest of the season, maybe with a view to an extra year, that would be perfect. Still a class act, and most importantly, he's a goal machine and when JD doesn't fire, right now we come up short. Van Nistelrooy would be the perfect remedy.
