Keane is so off form its untrue and Redknapp doesn't seem to trust Pav so he will rotate with Crouch to partner JD

Stupid signing if true. 4 strikers at the club already, what does he add? Yes he is on a free but so what? Let's address key areas like goalkeeper and centre midfield as a priority not sign a player who has no form and some believe can do a job in the middle.......

I think some people need to look at the bigger picture.

It is inevitable that either pavlychenko or keane would leave if the right offer were to come in. Although we are not in europe im sure harry would prefer to have four strikers to call upon. If one of Pav of keano were to leave and crouch or defoe got injured, we'd be buggered. We need four strikers.

Now, january is not a time to be buying players full stop. Strikers cost a fortune as nobody wants to sell. There isnt a great amount of choice. We have a player here that we can have on loan for 30 grand a week. He has a abundance of experience (which we lack), a winning mentality (which we lack) and can play many positions including centre midfield (a position that would could also add to).

He should be at his peak but he's not. Maybe this move will re-ignite his career. This is for certain... he has never relied on pace. But has vison, technique and big game experience will be invaluable. There is plenty he can add to our starting 11 or off from the bench.

IMO a very good signing.

and i'm sorry to everyone but this may not be until tomorrow now. all i can say for now is gudjohnsen is coming, but NOT as a pav replacement as it stands.
Interesting, sounds like he is a midfield replacement then, not directly, but Gio has gone and he comes in to midfield, hmmmm, not a bad deal I guess, adds some good experience to the squad, and he it sounds like a cheap deal - so can't complain, Gio out on loan, him in on loan:shrug:

Guys, who's seen him play lately? His stats are woeful as per goals, so can't see him as a better option than Crouch/Keano/Pav up front, nor as an alternative to Kranjcar/Modric/Lennon or even Bentley-

I guess it's gonna be CM/AM, maybe in particular useful if we ever go 4-5-1 again? However, he'd then have to compete with Jenas and Kranjcar/Modric for a place on the bench (as Palacios/Hudd clearly are first choice). The only thing that makes sense is that he's replacing Jenas as 3rd/4th choice CM (depending on whether or not they still see Modric as an alternative there..)
I would see only Palacios and Modric as starters, I think the other two places are up for grabs at the moment, between, Hudd, JJ, and GoodJohnson.........well, until Lenon comes back -

Very happy if true. Think he would be a good influence going in the second half of the season. He'll push a number of players for places and he's a winner and an established name.

He will be pushing a lot of opposition players too I reckon. Needed.

I dont think it is likely that Keane will leave until the summer if at all, so we are referring to Pav as someone who could potentially go IF we get an offer that is acceptable.

Pav has not featured this term really, and therefore you could say that we are already operating with 3 strikers at the moment. Harry keeps bleating on about being able to play Modric or Kranky behind the striker, so they are options if we get injuries to our 3 main strikers.

Eidur is not good enough to start in midfield and does not have the guile to operate on the wings, so we are looking at a player who may come off the bench every once in a while when we are losing I guess....is that worth 30k a week? We all know how much Harry likes to make positive substitutions...

Everyone entitled to their opinions, but I dont see what Eidur will add to the 'bigger picture'.

Maybe this signing will allow for us to listen to offers for Keane and Pav. If we get the right offer we can sell without a last minute scramble to find a replacement.

I understand what you are saying but my point is this;

Players will/have leave/left this january. Pav could leave and so could keane. This window is a hard time to purchase the right players to improve the squad squad. Eidur (SSN say done) will come in and provide competition for a number of positions.

For a loan and 30k a week, if he starts a few and comes of the bench to inspire us to beat the likes of hull at home or bag a goal when we are 2-0 down at anfield, he will be worth it yes.

For me its his experience that we will benefit from the most.

i can see GudJ working well with Defoe and Pav and linking up well with Modric & Kranjcar, i cannot really see a partnership with Crouch or Keane though?

maybe it is Keane who will be leaving in Jan... if we do sell Pav and Crouch gets injured, then i'm not sure if GudJ is going to offer that much up top? (although hold up play is better than Crouch's)

He is probably a better hold up man, and very good in the air, he was Zola's foil at Chelsea, so you would see him working very well with defoe if he had to......

Underwhelmed by this, were it the Chelsea Gudjohnen I would be leaping up and down but he has been abysmal in Spain and France so he is on the way down as a player

There's always the possibility that Spain and France didn't suit his game whereas England, based on his time at Chavski, does. Time will tell but, while not exactly jumping for joy, I think this move has great potential.
