He himself said "four years at Tottenham for 11 million euros".

So I reckon it's 4 years. For 11 million Euros in wages.

A World Cup Finalist, in his prime, at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

You had to go and make me think of Roque Junior, didn't you?

Also, I took the "11 million euros" to be the fee (which it was). Talking about wages is a little classless, no? Not like we signed Scrooge McDuck, eh?

I think he was saying more "Wow! I'm playing for Spurs! And I've been valued at E11m!" rather than "Wow! I'm playing for Spurs! And I've got pots of money. Pots and Pots and Pots of money!"

Could be wrong.

EUR 11m = GBP 9.2m

52 weeks in a year x four years = 208 weeks

9,200,000 divided by 208 = 44k a week.

Does 44k a week for VDV sound plausible? I thought he'd want more.

Having listened to Harry during the initial realisation that we may have bagged VDV during the last two hours of the window, I'm trying to put together the sequence of events as disclosed by Harry on departing the Lodge.

He said that by all accounts we had signed VDV for £8m as a consequence of Daniel Levy being informed of his late availability for a knock down price. At one stage alledgedly it was to be a season loan until Real Madrid pulled out of the deal late.

So my question is, is this a Levy signing, in his capacity as a DOF, with the acknowledged agreement of his Manager, or had they originally discussed this player as a possible and then dropped him earlier in the window because of price? VDV's re-emergence as being possibly available was Real Madrid's recontacting any club which had made an enquiry?

Levy then getting hold of Redknapp to inform and basically get his manager's nod of approval before moving like lightning to secure..

It is intriquing to say the least.

Also apparently Liverpool couldn't move in for him as their owner Tom Hicks had signed off for the evening and they missed their opportunity...

This in one hell of a coup and I have to pay homage to the swift movements of Levy in pulling his team together to make an instant decision to act to secure the services of a World Class Dutch International.

I think that early in the summer Levy and Harry would have discussed the possibility of Real Madrid having many players that they will need to shift. The likes of VDV, the Diarras, Gago, Raul, Guti. Given that Levy was hovering around Real the summer before when Sneijder, KJH, and Robben were leaving, they definitely would have been looking at the situation again...we know how much Dan loves a fire-sale!

Harry intimated that VDV was one of the names discussed earlier, but at that time the package was not at a value they considered reasonable. So I don't think its a signing that was foisted on him. We all know that Harry loves clever ball players, and even if VDV gives him a problem in terms of fitting in all the creative players at his disposal, I am sure he is more than excited at the prospect.

I think the 44k p/w must be net after tax. So he's on c£90k per week, about right for a player of his calibre. I bet a few Spurs players will be queuing up for new improved contracts.

I don't know about that. If someone asked what you earned would you say 25k a year or 32k a year?

This is how I read it as well.

thought he was talking about how much we paid for him, rather than his wage

Besides, 11m euro's is 9m pounds roughly, which would mean he was earning only 45k a week roughly, some 20k/ week less than our highest earners, something I very much doubt.

Did we ever get any more details on what actually happened with the VdV transfer? Did we manage to get the papers in on time, or were they late and we were able to prove that it was due to a technical problem?

Its the transfer fee. He mentions it due to the fact that he is well aware RM wanted way more for him and it could well of been a stumbling block in previous attempted deals to shift him.

It certainly facilitated his move to Spurs lightning quick.
