Perhaps this will add some much needed perspective to the majority who have hugely over-emphasised Dier's performances this season.

Southgate's reasoning to leave Dier out seems just , but imo it's a poor decision, he should be in the team let alone the squad I feel.

If he wants him to be a leader next time around then gaining the experience from this tournament is vital. His reason doesn't make sense to me.

Nice excuse but he obviously doesn't rate him high enough as he is going with his strongest players to win it, not just a fun bit of experience

Do many of you think that Southgate's getting his own back on Dier from withdrawing from the England squad a few months backs?

If it is, it's to England's loss as I think him a John Stones would have been an excellent pairing.

Dunno about getting his own back. But all potential U21 players now know if you miss out on friendlies with weak excuses you don't go to the tournaments. Risky move but his decision as a manager.

Seems very strange, but Southgate was very supportive of Dier pulling out of the friendlies so I'd be surprised if it was anything to do with that.

Also don't like that the comment indicates his selection was done on sentiment to the older 4 defenders rather than playing ability.

Strange decision from Mr Southgate.

More likely has added perspective, if needed, that Southgate does not know what he is doing. If he wants to win the tournament why has he picked Championship defenders, and Chambers and Liam Moore who cant get a game for Arsenal and Leicester respectively, ahead of one of the best young defenders in the PL?

There is no way that Southgate has five centre halves better than Dier. What an idiot but unfortunately England will not progress while the likes of him are in charge. It is the same 'right sort of chap' mentality that prevented Brian Clough being England manager.

I hope Southgate was telling a white lie. if he really dropped Dier because he was young enough to be in the team next year then he is an idiot. He's supposed to pick his best to win the tournament, that's important for the best players to develop.

If Dier stays fit for us this season I don't think he'll be playing for the U21s next time around as I reckon he'll be part of the first team squad.
