Nobody has recieved any money from the 2016 tv deal yet.

No, but they received money from the 2013-2016 deal, which already saw a massive increase from the previous deal. Teams also want to receive that 2016 TV money, but they'll have to actually stay up in order to get those checks, so they won't sell their best players at our prices and risk being relegated (specifically West Brom), when they can keep them for a year, stay up, guarantee that 2016-2017 cash, then sell that player next summer for the same 15 million pounds we'd offer. Others who have squads that have no serious fear of relegation can spend now in anticipation of those checks next season (see Swansea giving Ayew a reported 100K a week deal, Palace signing Cabaye, West Ham spending heavily, Newcastle engaging in 35 million pounds of deficit spending).

Unless we have some secret master plan to buy a couple of players of CL quality during August, which there is no sign of thus far, we haven't put ourselves in a position to challenge for the top 4.

It isn't time to panic yet apparently but could someone let me know when it is so I can join in?

We are not getting top four anytime now but we should see more of 5/6th place finishes while the team develops and takes shape.

I don't think we'll be buying such quality. If we were to do so, there's no reason not to do so early so that they could start our first match.

Seeing as we haven't sold any key team members and we've already added a bunch of likely defensive improvements and some solid young players like Alli and Pritchard I'd say 5th/6th again with no signings.

All the players we've sold were non-contributers so they could just as easily be replaced by youngsters.

The clubs you mention are all middle order ones but have spent decent money and in some cases early in the window.
Im amazed that clubs like West ham who have massive debt still to service can keep spending so freely.
This is what the sky/bt money has done by allowing medíocre clubs to sign decent players that normally would not be interested.

I find it interesting that you say "we've already added a bunch of likely defensive improvements," when I distinctly remember you being essentially against signing Alderweireld (this stuck out because most here were for him). So does the "bunch" you reference above mean Wimmer (likely 4th or 5th choice CB) and Trippier, only? Or have you changed your mind on Alderweireld?

I refuse to believe we would be stupid enough not to buy anyone
We have made about 20m profit this windows, got a lot of big earners from the wage bill and signed 3 defenders , of whom on,y one likely to play
Likely to only have one striker next Saturday, which if that happens is an absolute disgrace
Need at least one striker, one cm and a wide player
Season could be playing catch up as usual if we wait till end of window

I wasn't "against Alderwiereld" I just thought he was more of the same. Looked good in his brief showing though, but if you've seen my other posts you'll know just how high on Trippier I am and I'm a fan of Wimmer, although I think he's developmental.

No but they can borrow against it....

No they can't. What bank is going to lend say west ham money when there is a good chance of them getting relegated? It may happen but the interest rates would be through the roof.
Teams (west ham included) borrow for transfer fees they will receive that season but no further.

Fair enough then on Alderweireld. I'll be interested to see how many who rate Trippier react if Poch doesn't start him early on in the first few league games. I think most see him as better than Walker, but I'm not sure Pochettino agrees.

Depends how much they intend to borrow - parachute payments will be big enough to fund decent acquisitions.
Not to mention they can if they wanted borrow against future season ticket sales, not advisable but workable for reasonable amounts. WH have already sold these for the OS ...... there are many many ways they can borrow beyond in year revenues

For me given the amount of football we played last season, and given the squad at present id say we'll finish 7th.
For me while the players we have sold werent really key to the starting eleven last season, they were options. We have a good eleven, but the bench looks really weak. Injuries to key players would really harm us.
Without the sheer brilliance of Kane last season (whom papered over a lot of cracks with in the side) we would have struggled. Its hardly likely we will see so many last minute winners this coming season. without those goals we would have been a lot further down the league.
If there is a chance of getting a champions league place, we need to have a side that can compete in both the Europa League and the league. Failure to strengthen the team so it can compete on both fronts, will only hinder us league.

Was speaking to a fellow supporter today. He unlike me watches a lot of our youth games. He was saying Winks will be at the heart of our midfield before Christmas.

Really?

That is encouraging. I have seen snippets of him.

What are his strengths?

Going to say no on this. I don't think we switch from the 4231, and I don't think WInk beats out Bentaleb, Mason, Alli, new signing ever, let alone by Christmas. Not saying he won't get some game time - but absent injuries, he won't be "the heart" of the midfield.
