Very interesting from the BBC, seems like it was literally down to Peace vs Levy in the end:

"Some at West Brom encouraged chairman Jeremy Peace to find an agreement with Spurs counterpart Daniel Levy, even within the final hour of the window, but Peace refused.

"It is also understood that at no point in this saga did Peace give Tottenham a price that might secure the player, hence the prolonged chase and multiple bids.

"There is serious concern at West Brom about the effect this will have dressing room morale, with Berahino not in a state of mind to play and not one of the more popular figures among team-mates.

Yep, Peace was playing the big man and has just succeeded in fucking it up for everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if Pulis was one of those trying to encourage him to sell.
Pride comes before a fall.

Just something I've been thinking. I know several Spurs fans that know their football but don't do the whole online thing and aren't registered to any forums. I've spoken to 5 of them today in a mini experiment type thing and every single one is at least ok and at most very happy with our window. They've basically between them said that Trippier, Alli, Wimmer, Alderweireld, N'jie and Son makes for a really good window. They would've liked a striker but are generally ok due to Son & N'jie as back up and only one of them was angry at the failure to sign a DM. They're normal fans. Most hadn't heard of Wimmer for instance but generally know what they're talking about.

I think my point is that if there was no internet and no reminder every other minute that we're after Witsel or Wanyama or Martinez or Illaremendi or Berahino or Pato or all the other players on the transfer rumours forum, then people would be much less angry at the result of our business. Sure they'd be gutted but nowhere near as angry. Some people take the ITK thread far too literally and as we all know, what was the case one minute might change the next. If people weren't aware what was happening that first minute then they can't get angry at the next when nothing comes of it. As much fun as the ITK thread is, and it is, it doesn't half bring out the worst in people. The Internet era has changed people's patience. For example, in the whole scheme of things, the Illaremendi rumours lasted around a week, maybe 10 days before he signed for Sociedad but because of the Internet, people were constantly talking about him every minutes of every day so it felt like we'd been after him for years and it made it worse when we didn't get him.

While I'm yapping on and on I might as well get this thought in too; I personally completely understand how ITK works and that things can change quickly. My 'advice' to the ITK's is that if you add the terms 'my source believes/states' and 'as of this moment' then that would go down better with lots of posters. So a comment like 'Berahino is pretty much done' could be changed to 'my source believes that as of this moment, Berahino is pretty much done'. That way the ITK doesn't come across as any kind of know it all (not that they do now) and even the most anti ITK poster will understand that the ITK is just passing on info in good faith and not declaring themselves to be the daddy. This should be obvious anyway but not all posters understand this..... This is absolutely not a dig at ITK's, especially our ones. They've been beautiful.

Back to the window, I'm writing this season off in terms of top 4 but I think we'll use lots of youth over the season and that can only be good for next season. If Poch really wants Berahino that much, I'd rather he waits for him next season than get someone in for the sake of it and not play them much anyway (like Stambouli & Fazio). Saying that, I'm very disappointed we didn't get a striker & think we're an injury to Kane away from having a 'mare but am excited to see how Son & Clinton work out. And I really fucking love Dier so I'm glad he'll get more game time. I'd play him up front if it meant him being on the pitch. Future captain for me.

It's been disappointing but it's not a disaster. And striker/DM aside, it's been a pretty decent window. I'm 50/50 re Levy. There's no doubt he's done some amazing things for us but he's also fucked up too. I'm ready for a sugar daddy City style to take us to the next level. I've been a season ticket holder for 35 years and now I want to see us compete properly and regularly. I'd very much prefer to do all this under Levy but I can't see that being possible due to the limitless spending by City, Chelsea & now Utd.

Jesus how long? If you're still reading you're obviously bored.
Hey mate - fantastic post ans I'm glad you had the patience to articulate what could be my thoughts, so thanks!

Did he, in so many words?

In any case, if Poch wanted him that much why are we waiting till deadline day to seal the deal?

Poch said:
"It is never easy because there are always a lot of players around the world that you can sign," he said.

"It's like when you are in love with some lady - there are a lot of women around the world - but you want only one. Sometimes it is impossible. It's about love. And in football it is the same."

We've been bidding for weeks, but Peace kept holding out for a massive bid, it's not like we only showed interest this morning.
Don't get me wrong, I'd have liked to get Saido this window.

On the plus side I do think Son is a hell of a signing, and I think he'll adapt pretty quickly to...but he's not a proper forward that's for sure.

I was convinced Berahino would happen - and not just because of ITK or whatever, it just made a huge amount of sense to me, and given that he was young and British I genuinely thought Levy would meet their asking price in the end. An investment that carried plenty of protection - scope for resale etc.

And its not just about Kane getting injured. There's every chance he won't hit the lofty heights of last season. He'll be a marked man and the expectation could be a weight round his neck too. Another reliable and proven Premier League goal scorer, offering us pace and good movement, would of taken a lot of the burden off Kane.

Oh well, its not the end of the world as some rightly point out but I think it could well be to our detriment.

Since Comolli went to Liverpool, they have repeatedly snatched players we were after from under our noses.

Even though I agree that letting Comolli go was a mistake, we've still managed to finish ahead of them like 5 of the last 6 seasons or so I believe...

Ive read somewhere - I think Twitter - thatthe intention is to encourage both N'Gie and Son to drift in, as per Bale and Ronaldo, and in time to assume the mantle of a no 9.

So we got rid of a lot of players and weakened the team.........
No we didnt though did we?? We got rid of a lot of players, taking up a lot of the wage budget who had limited to no impact last season and added a number of players who strengthened the team/squad.
Im looking forward to the season and wierdly the europa to see how some of the fringe players do

I dont think its a case of being skint or the stadium impacting on spending. Weve never really lived beyond our means but all itk and even poch mentioned us working on deals. My own opinion is that poch had clearly identified targets and we received encouragement from the players clubs/representatives. Yes as fans we think its a simple case of if we cant have player a we just get player b (blame football manager or fifa etc). But if we get it wrong we can reset the game or start again. Poch has a plan, maybe he doesnt want another stambouli

I get that and we have clearly been guilty of spunking money in the past but there are players who moved this summer who would have clearly improved our squad. We've pissed about again on the basis of the 'Levy Time' myth (which worked once by chance) and left ourselves short.

We must be the only team in the PL with one striker and if he gets injured we are gonna be anally screwed.

I can see why we didn't let Faz go as we need one of our CBs to play as a DM, it would have left us with 3 CBs and our midfiled is gonna be a bunch of kids for some time to come.

We can all talk about January being not far off but we traditionally dont spend much in January, in any case we'd have to sell 3 for every one we get in as profit seems to be the main goal.

If we perform as expected this season we can say goodbye to Hugo.

I can't say I blame them. There's bound to be a few idiots on here that will take a pop at them. I think I've seen one already.

Saying that I'm pretty confident that Trix and JJ will appear by the end of the night and give us an update.

I get that, I really do.

But again JJ did state that he isn't afraid of bearing bad news.

Four thoughts:
Our defence is better and we have done a stellar job clearing deadwood. Getting anyone to buy Kaboul was an achievement in itself.

Our striking options may be better but we're raw and now need Clinton and especially Son to come off for us. Berahino would have made us stronger but DL clearly over Westminster his hand. Others have said it but Berbatov on a 1 year deal as cover or impact from the bench isn't the worst idea.

I worry about the central midfield. We are thin and raw there. For me that's the big miss. We can only hope.

Finally deadline day signings and optimism are a VdV fuelled myth. I shan't believe in last gasp miracles again.

The THFC transfer window is like watching a porn movie - you always know how it is going to end.

Credit of course to Sir Mick for the original comment.

At least Lennon still wants to play football. Ade just wants to play.

And we end up with 'egg' on our faces!

I think our scouting system is probably pretty good. But the fact of the matter is they don't sign players, they suggest players. And if Levy isn't willing to spend/listen/(whatever it that has caused this) then they are basically people we pay to watch football. Good for them for getting something out of Levy. They got a few wins, but you have to imagine they suggested a lot of strikers and we couldn't get off the Brummie train long enough to consider them.

Exactly.

I'm not saying don't go for players like Martial. I'm saying the scouting network didn't identify him. He's a big name, and he went for a colossal transfer fee.

It's like when we tried to sign Aguero. And Mata. And Hazard. And Depay. Nice ideas. They simply never, ever, ever happen though.

Son and N'jie could turn out to be fantastic signings, I don't necessarily think our scouts are useless. The point is that we shouldn't be left as short as we are at this point. Players in key positions should have been identified and secured earlier on. I don't know whether that's the scouts fault, the chairman's fault or Poch's fault. We can only guess.

Poch might say he's only interested in Berahino, and we probably should have done more to make that happen. I personally think making quick-fire no hope bids on the last day for an only choice target is risible.

As with Schneiderlin last year. sometimes you have to take a plunge on a big price tag. Otherwise you'll miss out when a more attractive club is in for them the following year. When a player you really want wants to join you, then you should probably take advantage of that situation. If t doesn't work out then you're landed with a £12m player for £25m. We've spunked more than that up the wall on averege players over the past few years.

Apparently the fee a few weeks ago was pretty affordable to us though, he simply chose not to come. Hazard would have come to us if Chelsea hadn't won the Champions league that summer knocking us out of the competition, he said that himself. It just always seems strange that people knock our scouting system when we signed Bale from a Championship side and sold him on for a world record fee. Not to mention signing players like Berbatov, Hugo, Bentaleb, etc.

The way we conduct our business definitely needs looking at. If we miss out on key areas every year then something must need fixing somewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I'd have liked to get Saido this window.

But in bidding for weeks Levy managed to fuck them off by making a series of low bids. If you want a player that badly, you pay the price, or at least make a sensible offer. You don't (apparently) offer £5m upfront on deadline day.
