We're almost certainly going to have to win the league to avoid being in the third pot - otherwise we could end up with a bastard draw with Bayern/Real or Barca/Dortmund. If our cup draws this season are anything to go by we probably would as well. Another reason to take the Europa League seriously, so as to minimise the chance of ending up straight back in it once we do get into the Champions League again.
We were in Pot 3 in 10-11 :)

A good time for this Henderson story - should annoy the hell out of Liverpool fans ahead of Anfield game in 2 weeks time.

but he has loads of experience thou. could be a risk worth taking if he is cheap and on decent wages. maybe a 2 year contract.

He'll be off to china in the summer for a ludicrous wage no doubt.

Literally couldn't think of a player worse suited to Poch's style.

I agree with this but Jordan Henderson is up there in terms of ill suited links.

Chronic injury, slow, limited technically.

This rumour actually angers me he's so shit.

Lol what? Henderson is not slow, and is very technically gifted that's why he's playing in the premier league, also I see Shaw was continually injured at Southampton before Poch and is at United.

Pre-season under him would fix that but its The Sun so this is a nothing story

Personally don't feel we need a defensive midfielder as we are well stacked with centre mid options most of whom should improve. Clearly a striker who can also play in the three in behind is the priority and I know it's a sore point for some but I have seen enough of Berahino to know he is quality and would improve under our manager so I would still take him, I also expect us to still sign Dembele 2.

Beyond that I think Poch will need to decide if Carter-Vickers is going to make the grade and if not then cover at centre half would be advisable. Another option would be to send CCV on loan and bring in a more experienced defender short term a la the Naybet transfer.

We are at the stage where, should a genuine world class player who could improve us become available in ANY position, we should be looking to sign that player - as long as they are also a grafter who can adapt to the system (so no Toures or Iscos or James' for me - not that we would have a hope of paying any of their wages anyway).

The likes of Lacazette, Embolo, Michy B etc. Who have been mentioned - I have a full time job and a social life and so have seen hardly any of. If Poch thinks they are the real deal I am all for it but no need to buy for the sake of it and if we are in for younger players like these who I presume have a high ceiling, we should be moving quickly if there is any chance they will shine at the Euros for their respective national teams and become more expensive.

Liked the shout from left field of Blind for his quality and versatility and should Mourinho go to United I think he may be available. One player who I like who is really direct and doing well despite not getting a proper chance at Chelsea is Salah but I don't envisage Roma doing a deal. Another one just off the cuff that I would maybe enquire about the status of would be Munir at Barcelona - Looked good whenever I have seen him but is not getting a game there any time soon. Probably not the best example of a Premiership or Pochettino forward but has obvious quality and is young.

Ousmane Dembele is just the type of player Spurs dearly need - a player with pace and dribbling skills and an eye for goal. Spurs lack pace up front, so when Spurs pushed back - as they always are when they take the lead - they are easier to push back as Spurs are not that good on counter attacks (mainly due to their lack of pace up front). With a pacey wide striker up front the opponents, naturally, have to be more careful pushing players forward if Spurs can hurt them better on counter attacks.

Realistic I can only see us signing a striker and i DM 1st choice/backup to Dier.

But since this is i "Wish list". I would like a backup to Kane, a world class DM/CM since i still think Dier should play CB. And a attacking midfielder better than Chadli.

And the winner for the most hilarious transfer rumour is....

The Sun Football ‏@TheSunFootball 9m9 minutes ago
EXCLUSIVE: Spurs plan £25million swoop for Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson http://thesun.uk/6018B5zp6

...I guess the Scousers have picked up on this story and believe it....but then they take it to another level. Ha! :ROFLMAO:

"I'd take it, but only if we had a suitable/better replacement lines up to spend the money on. I'd also try to push them for closer to 30m, or as was suggested, get Alli in the deal"

Jesus fucking christ. The absolute state of that thread.

"I would also like us to have a go at buying Eriksen from Tottenham, he is very creative and would fit in well alongside Can/Hendersen/Milner, I can't believe we never got him before Tottenhan, we were always linked to him and Molby used to say what a great fit he would be, he is supposed to be a Liverpool fan, I guess you can file him under the missed like Alli moneyball non-buys."

How the tables have turned - about 20 years ago we were desperate to pick up a few Liverpool players like John Scales, now we've finished above them in PL for about 6 years out of 7, but they clearly haven't spotted the change of fortunes. Why they think they can easily pick off our squad is beyond me.

Almost as deluded as the ManU fans convinced we would sell them Kane last summer.

Three key positions to address.
RCB - someone to take the workload off Toby, like for like in the way Wimmer has stepped in for Jan.
DM - someone to share the load with Dier, like for like stylistically, able to drop deep as an auxiliary CB when the fullbacks go up.
CF - someone to share the load with Kane, maybe not so much like for like, so they could indeed play together if required.

Up until now, I believed Bentaleb was the understudy to Dier in the DM role, but to see Mason and Carroll together Thursday was less than sturdy, and also changes the dynamic of the usual tactics. I think we missed that shielding player, who also drops between the CB's to allow the fullbacks to get upfield, that's key to our game and with Mason and Carroll there, that wasn't going to happen. So, if Bentaleb isn't seen as the straight swap for Dier, then we need to be looking for one. Wanyama has been linked before, and obviously has played under Pochettino before.

Higher up the park, we are perhaps overloaded with AM/WF, so maybe there's room to move one out in order to bring another CF in, and realistically despite his decent goals output, I do wonder if Chadli really has the dynamism to go to the next level. With Eriksen, Lamela, Son, Njie also in the mix, Alli often played up there, along with the returning Pritchard, and then Onomah on the fringes. Dembele on a bosman would give us a physical option as backup, then maybe go back and look again at someone like Ben Yedder, as an alternative style CF, both could be got for a relatively modest outlay I'd guess. I just can't see us going for the likes of Berahino, Lacazette or Batshuayi, too big an outlay based on recent windows.

There is some suggestion Carter-Vickers will be Toby's understudy, and the return of Dominic Ball after a decent loan at Rangers, capable of being like for like with Dier as a CB/DM option. Question is, with the CL on the horizon, does selling Bentaleb to buy Wanyama as a closer Dier option at a higher level than Ball, become a more desirable route? As good potentially as Bentaleb could be, if he isn't the Dier role, then we would be overloaded in the other CM role and is he above or below Mason and Carroll in Poch's eyes?

So,
Fazio out, Carter-Vickers step up.
Bentaleb cover Dier.
Ball to cover both roles.
Or Bentaleb out and Wanyama in.
Chadli out, Dembele and Ben Yedder in.

Lloris, Vorm
Walker, Trippier
Rose, Davies
Alderweireld, Carter-Vickers, Ball
Vertonghen, Wimmer
Dier, Bentaleb/Wanyama
Dembele, Mason, Carroll
Lamela, Son
Eriksen, Alli
Njie, Pritchard
Kane, Ben Yedder, Dembele

Then the likes of McGee, Walker-Peters, Winks, Onomah etc.
Agree that we need like for like cover for Dier, but I can't see it being someone as average/poor as Wanyama, that'd be like stambouli mkII IMO.

Berahino would be brilliant , if the stories are true.

While I am fine with the rest of the squad. I feel, if we have to reach the next level, we need a better attacking midfielder than Eriksen or atleast someone to challenge him. He has been great this season, but attimes he has been a let down in terms of wasting good opportunities by misplacing simple balls. Someone in the ilk of Reus (not Reus himself), but some one who could be dynamic and get us of our seats when he's on the ball.

Personally I think we need to shift Chadli (doesn't fit), Carroll (the wrong player to midfield 2) and Fazio (shit). Leaving us with the pressing need to add a striker and possibly a creative midfielder/wide forward if the right player is available.
