While I agree there were dark moments, I wont condone the bashing of past players (Sol Campbell excepted for different reasons). Those players might not have been very good but they were ours and we all cheered them come win lose or draw. They all wore our shirt and fought for the cause despite their limited ability. We were never relegated! Now to turn and dis these players is both hypocritical and pathetic. You all remind me of someone living a humble and simple life, then win the lottery and turn into snobs (I was tempted to use c**** which would have been more apt)

So you are supposed to buy a season ticket or follow the club but say nothing about the player on the field? Have you never passed judgment on a spurs player. Sorry but everyone has the right to their opinion.

You obviously have missed the point.

Maybe it's you that have missed the point.
For me this thread wasn't about bashing the 90's but celebrating this season and having a giggle at some of our previous experiences with some comedy players at the same time.

For some reason you seem to have found you Stetson and mounted your high horse

Oh Lordy...its the 90s . A lot of the horror is already covered here .

The wild change of course between Ossie and Francis .Traumatised Sugar announcing famously ' No more Carlos kickaballs' at exactly the moment foreign players were starting to be really successful in the Prem .

Mebbe the ugliest part of the SoS (save our spurs) organisation's campaign vs Sugar was just after the turn of the century so we'll leave that out. The forlorn cry 'We want our Tottenham back' . We simply didn't recognise our club simple as that .Difficult in these sunny times to adequately describe the turmoil back then .

When Francis was eventually sacked and made his final statement he said Spurs fans were a deluded lot .He went on to recall the craziest fan moment of all . He was driving home listening to Alan Mullery's radio show . Spurs were third (briefly) and a 'complete idiot' fan came on to complain about the (turgid long-ball )football Spurs were playing .

That complete idiot is writing this ...:D
Ah Gerry Francis, the man who preferred to sign Chris Armstrong instead of Denis Bergkamp... a confessed spurs fan who was dying to join us.

Tit.

Nice thread, and perfectly timed as no doubt others have suggested. Many of here continuing to moan about Dembele not passing quickly, Alli deserving to be dropped or Son sold. These people lack perspective.

We were shit after Sugar drove Tel out and failed to catch the sky wave joyfully ridden by scum, buying Bergkamp, Zola and winning pots left right and centre. Their shirts popped up on our manor, on the streets, in the parks, we lost a generation of fans.

I binned my st which I'd had since 80 and didn't buy another one till the wanker sold up.

Dark,,dark,days.

But now the sun has risen again.

My first game was at Loftus Road, in with the home fans at the beginning of the 1995-1996 season. My stepdad (who was a massive Rangers fan) took me, together with all his QPR mates who were all fairly nuts and must have been involved in the, shall we say shadier side of football fanaticism of that era.

The memory of all them picking me up and throwing me around as they went 2 up just after the restart still sticks with me. A quick Sheringham penalty, instinctive Dozzell finish and then Teddy again with the winner capped a great comeback. Being a little 8 year old gobshite at the time, I sang and danced on the tube all the way home. I'm sure my stepdad would have left me on the train if he wasn't slinging one up my mum the tosser.

And also I must say what a pleasure to read everyone else's memories of spurs in the 90's. As a fairly young kid throughout the decade, I look back on most of our players of the time with a certain gloss that only the memories from a 10 year olds mind can have. You might say Dozzell was shite (and watching old videos he was), but I onlyremember an equaliser away at St. James Park to grab a 1-1 draw. And if Dominguez is a clown to some, to me he will always be a hero after the Southampton 3-2 !

I had Iversen on my shirt for years and if I were to see him today I would break down in tears I expect.

Mate, that's possibly one of my favourite moments from that era. I was sat in a working men's club in Newcastle with my Geordie family watching that game... they needed to win to stand a chance of winning the title. As it happens Dozzell of all people scored first, we drew, and Man U twatted Middlesbrough 3-0 or something anyway.

Brilliant. Have enjoyed beating that lot ever since.

Ahh you're right he did score first didn't he! I remember watching the match on my mum's bed whilst she was downstairs making a Sunday roast. When Sir Les scored I was convinced it was because I was sitting on the bed so I watched the rest of the game on the floor and of course we held on for the draw. You're welcome.

Nice finish that Dozzell goal. Last game of the season 20 years ago.

Being born in 1981 meant that I grew up with the team of the 90's and the famous five under Ossies simplistic if they score 5 we'll score 6 mentality but the darker memories looking back are still tinged with an element of charm and the thought of

  • Anthony Gardener as a first choice centre back...
  • Our best option to change a game was to put the 'Ginger Pele' upfront
  • Being genuinely excited that we'd signed Jose Dominguez... and then watching him play

Some of that wasn't the 90s....but during that era we were pretty crap...so it's easy to get confused!

While we're here, I sat in the Paxton/West Stand corner in the late '90s/early '00s. There was a young couple in front of me who used to always wear the same home shirts. One had Sherwood on the back and the other had Perry. If this was you, explain yourself.

I remember seeing him in his Spurs tracksuit at Liverpool St station in 1998. I believe he was catching a train to East Anglia as he was banned from driving.

Ruel Fox couldn't see over the wheel hence not allowed a driving licence.

Watching us put 4 past Southampton in under 5 minutes. Remember getting pissed off when the 4th one went in as we were still celebrating the third

It seems I'm a little bit older than some of you. 41 on Sunday ;). But some great memories the 4-1 win against Utd on New years day '96 stands out for me. But some horrific hammerings the 1-6 against Chelsea in '97 the worst I was with my brother and his kids and we left at 1-4 with half an hour to go we weren't the only ones!. What's happening now is utopia for me compared to that decade.

I've blanked out most of the 90s football wise, but the dark days of Gerry Francis followed by Christian Gross still give me nightmares.

I remember when we signed Dumitrescu and Popescu - I thought we were going to be fantastic. Sigh.

Wasn't it in the mid 90s we got that initial 12 points deduction & we were all worried about relegation?

Yup... 12 point deduction and FA Cup ban. Not only did Sugar get the ban lifted and the points reinstated, he still somehow convinced Jurgen Klinsmann to join the club!
