Folk need to stop, take a deep breath and listen to what is being said.

Firstly, I have read my way through this gargantuan splurge of panic, fear and loathing (and BC celebrating). I have seen repeated claims that we can't just rely on Trippier. Has everyone forgot that Dier can also play right-back. Not ideal, obviously - no versatile player ever is the perfect solution in two or more positions, otherwise he probably wouldn't be a versatile player. But that would give us Trippier, Walker-Peters and Dier as options. So we would neither be just relying on Trippier and playing him every game, nor having to hope that Walker-Peters hits the ground running and being left with just Trippier if he fails to hit the ground running.

Secondly, as Trix says in another post, why are folk just stuck on the idea that if he goes it will be to Citeh. The fact that someone with ITK status keeps saying this should tell you that there is a pretty good chance that if he goes it won't be to Citeh or to any other direct rivals.

Exactly. Except in cases of extreme implosion, it is always a safe default to assume that the folk who actually earn their bread and butter working within the club have a much better idea of the complexity of a situation that no marks like us :)

Again, this is the point. Most fans tend to think game by game. The major players at the club are thinking strategically.

Suppose, for instance, that Walker-Peters isn't quite ready this season, but Poch believes he will be soon and will be a better option/part of a better option (or solution, to use Corporate speak) than Walker. We have been operating within costs for quite some time - that is why we have all been marvelling at the two season table, where we are top by several points, while having a net spend of about £5 million. Now, supposing, thinking strategically, Poch believes that we need a couple of major signings and we have a few players coming through that he is confident on, and that will basically give us a squad to be going on with for a few years - he has already spoken of being ahead of schedule here, so he clearly does have a clear vision going forward. So, we may need to sell one player (and, presumably, Sissoko, and some drift), in order to make some fahook signings who take our squad to the next level while at the same time over a couple of years period actually upgrading the right-back option. And then think on that next year, Walker has a year less on his contract, will be a year older, could lose form, could get a serious injury, etc. His price, that cuold be £50 million plus this summer, could end up being half that a year later. And then take into account that both Trix and JJ have hinted that there have been a few problems with Walks.

Now might be the best time to cash in, it could turn out to be a very shrewd piece of squad building, and it may be that if we have to sell one 1st teamer over the next few seasons, the best time and best player to do it. That is strategic thinking. As @thelak says, it is like thinking two or three moves ahead in a game of chess or snooker.

Again, this is the point. The thinking behind anything that the likes of Dan Levy and Poch do is very, very complex...and you think my posts are long :)

It is. Trix has given you one example, the Mickeys selling Torres and buying Suarez. Here is another - United sold Beckham, Ronaldo (greasy, not fat...but greasy in a non anti-semitic slur kinda way...it's just his hair, man!) and Ruud van NistleHorse to RM (despite Fergie saying he wouldn't give them a virus). If you go back to Beckham, United still dominated the league for a decade, and didn't sell the likes of Giggs and Scholes. I know we aren't on the same level as them, but still, there is no reason to suppose the club will implode form selling Walker. Instead, we might get a nice, hefty £45 - £50 million plus for selling him, hopefully abroad, and using the money, and promoting younglings, end up with a much stronger squad. All good if we can.

Only worry, is that we don't want to strengthen rivals...and if it is to Bayern/RM/Barcelona/PSG (extra £80 million premium for them), we won't be.

@EastLondonYid - come on, Easty, it is all over the media and respected ITK's have said there may* be something in it. It is a viable discussion - as long as folk are respectful (and on that I agree with you - no need to abuse the fella).

And as @DJS says, at some stage one of Walker and Trippier would have to make way if we want to give KWP a shot. We can't keep both of them and promote KWP - three into two just won't go (no smut response, PLEEEEEZZZZZEEEEEEE).
I'd love to see Dier as a wing back, that pace....

Yup.
It was exactly the process when we sold Yedlin. Our squad builders need to evaluate all the right backs at the club and trying and project that over the next couple of years.

Yedlin wasn't a kid anymore.
Could we keep sending him on loan?
Could we afford to have three senior right backs plus an exciting prospect?
Was he likely to overtake either Walks or Trippier?
Whuch of him and KWP is likely to be the better long-term option?

I quite liked Yedlin, and certainly didn't have anything against him. But it was probably the right time, for him as well as us, to sell.
Oh boy, that boy.. I almost forgotten him.. What a prospect everyone thought we are getting..

Playing as wingback, he may be a valuable option to have now.. Full of pace and attacking intent..

Taking into account that you are (hopefully) being facetious:

Dier played LB in Poch's first year - remember his goal against tonight's opponents.
If we were promoting KWP, Dier would be third choice unless things went drastically wrong. Just pointing our it is an option if that happens.
Davies isn't the paciest full-back on the other flank, either, but has been a component in our unbeaten run.
I did caveat by saying he isn't the perfect option.

Dier is simply not an option!! We play with wing backs now, not right backs in a 4. I couldn't think of much worse than Dier as a wing back

Going by the squad previews on instagram...Walker/Trippier are in the squad, along with KWP (who has a shirt printed).

However, typically we have 4/5 extra players in the squad in case of emergencies.

Pau Lopez has always travelled with the team on match days in case of an injury to either keepers. I dont think its anything out of the ordinary to see KWP shirt up

I assume you've forgotten Dier started as a right back for us.
Yes he did when we played 4 at the back without wing backs. Now we either play 3 at the back or we play 4 and Dier still drops deep to let the full backs attack. If people thing Trippier is too slow for wing back then Dier....
