Mental. Ol' Sadsack slopes off to baste himself on a sunbed. I honestly thought he'd have stayed on and continued the sterling work he's been doing to try and rebuild his reputation after the England pisstake.

Actually, the way the England thing played out, i can't help but think he's been offered a significant amount of money elsewhere, probably to do exactly what he was saying he could on that secret tape that got him sacked.

I have to admit I was a little suspicious reading about this and wonder if he's gonna be caught with his pants down again lol as been up to something!

Although maybe he's just a bit disinchanted after the whole England thing.

Fair enough if he wants to retire.

He's retired just like Harry retired. It's amazing how much difference an extra '0' makes.

I fully expect him to have retired from management but to show up as a "consultant" or something in the middle east, driving a very shiny car.

The England job was meant to be his pinnacle. He fucked that up, needed to repair his reputation, did it at Palace and that's his career done. I understand why he's quit.

He was never going to get a bigger job - why continue being a relegation firefighter? It's probably become boring being type-cast. He's made his money and there's no more purpose for him to manage. Time for fresh faces to have their chance.

Last night a Palace fan said to me that their fans had 'slight concern' he would leave and it was over summer transfer plans.

Now he's gone. And gone for good, it seems. They are speculating there is some tax issue from his time at West Ham (the raids the other week...).

Yeah, I quite respect the way Allardyce has gone about this - granted there's no shifty business going on in the background (Danners9 insinuation above sounds far from implausible). Maybe being idealistic, but I rather admire the concept of a guy taking on a job primarily as a matter of redemption and respect, as opposed simply to finance and careerism.

Then again I've always had a bit of a soft spot for BFS, even if he is an ogre

But anyway, following on from above, I think Palace is a hell of a job for any coach short of the top couple of rungs. Man for man they're not far off having the best squad outside of the top 7, and Parish appears to back his managers pretty well.

Considering Marco Silva appears to have his pick of the bottom two thirds of the league if I were him I'd be deliberating pretty hard right now as to the most appealing project between Palace and Southampton.

He's been tapped up, Wenger will resign tomorrow and Arsenal will go back to the kick and rush football they were first known for.;)

Can see him coming out of retirement around about March every year where some relegation threatened team will more than gladly pay him £5 million for for 3 months work.

The guy is a smart cookie if you ask me.

Cannot knock his achievements, would have been a far better England manager than anyone else recently if given the chance.

Very underrated manager

I just had a thought, maybe he was deeply affected by the Manchester bombing an decided to revaluate his priorities in life.

Yeah, he'll probably pick and choose short term jobs to bring in some money, but he says he wants to spend more time with his grand kids so he won't commit to being a manager for a full season.

Alan Brazil said on talk sport that he'd had heard something like that, I didn't hear it properly but it sounded like he said Allardyce knew someone who died in it
