I'd rather McGee personally.
Agreed, if we sign Paul o Pez we'll be blocking his path which seems crazy given he had a brilliant season out on loan.

Although it's all immaterial as Hugo has at least 5 years left and no-ones going to hang around that long waiting for the no.1 jersey.

I understand Vorm has signed a new deal, but I did wonder if he may be at the point in his career where he wants one last move to be a No1 somewhere.
Lopez to replace Vorm as No2
McGee to step up as No3

I see no point in spending any millions of pounds on Lopez unless we're moving Vorm on.

Now a really ruthless club would sell Loris and buy Pickford (I'm not suggesting it)

Ah, the age old [ruthless/stupid] confusion. No shame.

This one here would be stupid mate: like stabbing yourself in the eye on purpose. Stupid like.

Apparently we've ended negotiations for Lopez - I guess we'll try to sign him for free next summer if this is true.

Espanyol and Tottenham break negotiations for Pau López
  • The club communicates to the goalkeeper that will make the preseason with the first equipment
  • Lardín and Perarnau will work to ensure its renewal
Pau López will make the preseason with Espanyol , as the negotiations that the club maintained with Tottenham have been broken. Barring an unexpected change in the coming weeks, the young Catalan keeper will return to the discipline espanyolista after his experience, a year, in the Premier League .

While the departure of Roberto to Malaga is already in its final phase - at any moment can be announced officially the transfer of the goalkeeper -, the continuity of Pau could jeopardize the signing of Gorka Iraizoz .

Tottenham and Espanyol have not reached an agreement. The English team, remember, had a purchase option of seven million euros and a few weeks ago reported that it was not going to run , but presented an initial proposal of 1.5 million euros , amount that could rise accordingto a set bonuses . Espanyol responded with a no and Tottenham upped the offer by half a million euros. With the prizes stipulated, the final figure could reach approximately 2.3 million euros. This second offer was not to the liking of the Spaniards.

Finally, after a few days without negotiations, the Tottenham communicated that retired of the operation . The negotiations, then, have been broken. Espanyol has already formally communicated to Pau López who should join the staff of Quique Sanchez Flores for the preseason. Soon he will communicate the day that he must do it, although possibly later than the rest of the squad since the player is summoned with the Sub 21 and in case of reaching the final the competition ends on June 30 .

The return of Pau (never discard that the clubs reopen negotiations) puts in return the return of Gorka Iraizoz . The signing of Navarrese is verbally agreed , because it contemplate

Pau López finishes a contract on June 30, 2018 and the challenge of the technicians blue and white, if in August confirms the continuity of the keeper, would be the renewal of the young player . And here, undoubtedly , the role of Óscar Perarnau and Jordi Lardín can be decisive. The first bet clearly on Pau when he was responsible for the first team's sports; While Lardín has always defended that Espanyol had in the footballer a goalkeeper of much future . The two technicians could, therefore, facilitate the renovation of Pau López, who with the letter of freedom will have many 'girlfriends' .

If he's so highly rated and performed well during training then it smacks of serious penny pinching if we're not prepared to cough up a paltry £4-5m for him. If we're being tight arses over this then things don't bode well for signing outfield competition for our 1st eleven.

£5m for a 3rd choice GK with a year left on his contract is a waste of money. I don't see why we don't try to loan him for next season and then sign him on a free.

There's ITK to say he would replace Vorm as our number 2. It's hardly a waste of money when you've a talented keeper within your grasp for loose change. Loaning him would be a good idea but walking away from him altogether doesn't make any sense.

This guy seemed to be picked by Poch to come here, I'm not sure he'd be too impressed if we don't get him, it's probably just part of negotiations

Not fussed if we cant sign him permanently. We have some highly rated GK's in the academy, McGee is coming off a great loan and Vorm is a top #2 who can probably start for quite a few clubs in the PL. All this being said, i think we will sign him on a permanant deal.

According to Swedish papers (referencing various Spanish papers) Espanyol tried to play hardball with Levy by telling him he had until June 30th to activate the 7 million clause rather than Levys offer of around 2 million plus bonuses....But somehow Espanyol are now apparently starting to slowly cave to Levy.

How he does it if he pulls it off I will never know.

The reasons for 'no' from Espanyol to Tottenham by Pau López
  • The proposal of the 'spurs' to sign the goalkeeper was unacceptable for the blanquiazules
  • The English must pay a penalty of 500,000 euros for not executing the purchase option
"It was not an offer to accept." This is evident from the offices of Cornellà / El Prat to argue the 'no' to the last proposal presented by Tottenham by Pau López . The club blanquiazul prefers to run the risk of having the young Catalan goalkeeper only a single season more - ends contract on June 30, 2018 - if no agreement is reached for its renewal, which "practically give it away", remember. And is that the two million euros that finally guaranteed the Spurs were, in fact, 1.5 million euros.

THE PENALTY

The reasons for the 'no' from Espanyol to Tottenham must be sought in the contract of assignment that the clubs agreed last summer. On the one hand, remember, it was fixed that the blanquiazules would receive 600,000 euros as payment for the loan of the season that has ended. Amount that would be discounted in case the English finally executed the option to purchase set at seven million euros.

But at the same time, another clause also appears in the drafted contracts, as confirmed by sources of the own entity blanquiazul, which contemplates a penalty of 500,000 euros if the Spurs did not execute the definitive purchase option.

Tottenham, after a first scoring, presented their final offer. A proposal that guaranteed two million euros for the purchase, plus some variables that could reach 300,000 euros more. If Espanyol accepted, the Spurs were no longer required to pay the penalty. That is to say, in fact, the blue-and-white coffers would only enter 1.5 million more than they should receive at the moment.

COST EFFECTIVENESS

The negotiations between Espanyol and Tottenham are currently in stalemate. They do not exist. It is true that they can be reopened at any time, but today there is no contact between the clubs by the young keeper who, in any case, still likes Pochettino and Toni Jimenez , responsible for goalkeepers in the technical structure of the English team. The year they have had Pau has helped them to reaffirm their commitment to Catalan.
If it is finally confirmed that there is no transfer, the economic operation will not have been negative for the Spaniards. Between the cession and the penalty, the blue-and-white coffers will have entered 1.1 million euros . A good slice.

THE RENEWAL

Pau López must be incorporated into the discipline of Espanyol although he will do something later than the rest of the squad as he is disputing the European Under-21 with Spain. When he returns, the objective of the blue-and-white rectors will be to negotiate his renewal of contract . Easy will not be.

Pau , who will get married after the championship in Poland, ends contract in June 2018. Espanyol will use the good relationship that Perarnau and Lardin have always had with the footballer to try to iron out rough edges and achieve what today seems almost impossible: to renew him.

Apparently Spurs and Espanyol have agreed on a price. Pau will go back to Espanyol for a bit of ore-season and then be sold to Tottenham later this summer.

If I understood the article linked in another thread right

Why the delay? Wonder if it's a sign Vorm is off? Seems excessive to have 3 senior keepers, my guess is Vorm is moving on for regular starts somewhere, at which point Lopez comes in as No2, with McGee retained as No3.
