1. Not sure how Barkley has failed to progress when he's just had his best season for premier league output and its equal to Lamela's best season for which was at roughly the same age (well, a touch older) and with far better attackers to deliver to.

2. As I said I like Lamela, I just don't think it's ridiculous to say that Barkley would be more useful, in fact I'd say calling Barkley average is ridiculous. Average is Ruel Fox, average is Oyvind Leonhardsen, average is Michael Brown. Barkley is a many cuts above this players.

3. At what point do we worry about the fact that Lamela has appeared in just over half our matches over four seasons because of injury?
This, Sir, is the post of this thread!

However i liked Oyvind Leonhardsen!

Our squad depth was arguably better still than many of our rivals, injuries to Alderweireld, Kane twice, Vertonghen, Dembele, Lamela, Rose, Winks. Yes we want more depth of quality, but look through the Pool, Arse and Utd squads they were arguably thinner than ours.

Last season we had Son as the only player on the bench capable of changing a game for us, and he was only thereto call on when we had everyone fit. Otherwise he was in the starting XI.

It was a problem for us.

Someone like Barkley I would welcome for this reason alone.

Leave it late as in we track essential players to late in the window only for something to go wrong and leave us with a lopsided squad.

That finished 3rd then second in the PL. The balance of the squad could no doubt be improved but so could every squad in the PL.

Is Barkley really that explosive? Does he change games?

and flopped big time in the Champions League because we lacked depth and players suited to playing at Wembley... the ground we'll be playing all of our home games at and as it stands we'll be missing all of our quick players for the 1st 1-2 months of next season.

We often get accused of 'ALWAYS' leaving our transfer activity late.

It's a total myth that we do.

Of the current squad, note the actual agreed transfer dates:

May 29 - Kevin Wimmer
Jun 19 - Kieran Trippier
Jun 23 - Victor Wanyama
Jul 8 - Jan Vertonghen
Jul 8 - Toby Alderweireld
Jul 12 - Vincent Janssen
Jul 23 - Ben Davies
Aug 2 - Eric Dier

Even in the year we spent all the Bale cash, Paulinho signed 6th July, Chadli 21st July, Soldado 1st August.

Note - from elsewhere. Thanks to the author.

getting them later saves paying them wages over the whole summer innit

Oh!? I most surely didn't notice. Did we really finish second? But why on earth do we even have an open transfer section this summer? We should shut it down, as the club should shut down, too. Let's just reconvene on 1st of September shall we? No need to improve, there is no way we could have been better anyway. And every club you say? EVERY club? Well that's good news, isn't it? We don't need to outsmart anybody, they are all flawfull contenders anyway.

Those were the days

He could be a really skilful player.

Kind of a typical old-fashioned winger that was kinda erratic lol but I loved him in his first few seasons.

Could play either wing too so could either play on left with Anderton on right or Anderton in middle and Fox on right.

Back in the days when one defensive midfielder was enough and you could just stack three attacking midfielders in a 4-4-2 lol.

Exactly. It's what I get bashed for saying, but he is in need of loads of coaching.
100% correct mate. Don't get me wrong a Barkley who doesn't improve is poor. A Barkley under Pochettino tuition is more than likely a great player

Edit: poor maybe a bit strong but poor for us. God will never hate saying that. Goes to show how much we have improved

We didnt flop in the CL due to a lack of depth, we didnt go far enough for depth to be exposed. We flopped because we didnt have the technical ability in CM to recieve the ball and keep it under intense pressing from Monaco and Leverkusen.

£25m would be a good deal. If it wasn't for Alli, he'd probably be starting for England. And if he was foreign, we'd be all over him. He's got every attribute to be a star, he just needs the right coaching. Would provide excellent alternative for Dembele or in the front three. Hope we get him.
*I am temporarily breaking my pledge to be done with this thread to dispel a few things wrong here*
1) If he were foreign, SC would be on its and hands and knees practically begging for JJ to poo poo this whole thing and for West Ham to beat us out as he isn't good enough and he wouldn't have PL experience.

2) Cover for Dembele?!? This? Again? God help me. Ross Barkley is NOT a Central Midfielder. Ross Barkley is NOT cover for Mousa Dembele. We have sufficient cover for Mousa Dembele. He goes by the name of Harry Winks.

You should've taken your own advice and stuck with your pledge because this post is straight nonsense.

I'd say he was worse than erratic. He was substandard. I had a season ticket close the the pitch in those days too and his movement was awful, and weirdly he used to sort of grunt and chunter to himself when dribbling. Very odd.
