Take it with a pinch of salt, but there's rumours swirling in political circles that the government is going for a consultation/trial on restoring standing areas to English football. Part of a push for inexpensive but popular 'easy wins' after the Tories' election disaster. There's a DCMS (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) press release at 8am tomorrow which could be related if true.

Why are standing areas not allowed in the PL?
You make me feel very old this morning :(

Was there not something about safe standing in this thread a few days ago or did I read it somewhere else? (Again, the age is showing)

I was in the Park Lane, when did they ban standing?

After Hillsborough (April 1989) The Interim Taylor Report was published in August 1989 and the final report in January 1990. It was that report which banned standing in stadia in the the UK, although clubs were given time to implement it.

The equivalent today is for the government to ban fridges because of Grenfell.

dont get me started on that. I run a service network for appliances and have spent the last year modifying tumble dryers for Hotpoint /Whirlpool who have the same product build as all other brands but scaremongering caused widespread panic.

This fridge fire (in one of the most common models) may push them over the edge. Even though in all honesty, 95% of fridges made for the uk market use the same build material.

Only in the US is the backing made of metallic material.

I hope we are ensuring no corners are cut at the expense of safety on our new stadium (keeping this post on topic)

I read something a week or so ago about us planning to include safe standing should it get the go ahead although I cant find it... I did find this from the Q&A on the stadium website.

Safe Standing

Q: Have you taken into account the desire for safe standing, so that we can easily respond to any potential change in legislation?

A: The single tier Home End is all seating to meet current requirements, however areas of it have been designed with safe standing in mind and we shall have the ability to introduce rail type seating in the tier should the legislation change.

I still wouldn't get too excited for safe standing - according to Premier League rules all 20 clubs have to vote in favour of introducing it if the government changes the law to allow it. It's still highly unlikely that Liverpool and Everton would vote for it given public opinion in the city.

But its not terracing in the old form. Its a completely updated concept.

I think that they might just go with it

Then they need to be reassured that modern day safe standing is a world apart from the old terraces and, of course, fans are no longer caged in like animals.

If the Government approves safe standing (subject to criteria), then the PL will vote on whether to introduce / allow it. The majority of PL (and Championship) Clubs have already expressed support and are campaigning in favour (the last discussions were December 2016, I think). As far as I know Liverpool are the only Club officially to have come out in favour of keeping seat-only stadiums. Maybe Everton are the same. But even on Merseyside opinion is mixed (for example the HJC Hillsborough justice campaign and Spirit of Shankly fan group are apparently in favour of a safe-standing trial). I understand that no PL ground will be 'forced' to offer safe standing and it won't be offered in away fan sections. Only for home fans and optional for each club (with strict limits on the number / percentage of standing places).

Spurs' new stadium has been designed with safe-standing in mind, and I'm told it's likely that we would be chosen as one of the grounds to trial it. I think the single-tier South Stand is where all (or most?) of the safe-standing area is planned. The potential capacity of the South stand could rise by up to 6-7k, so from 17,000 up to 23,000+. I wasn't shown any specific location at the presentation I attended, but my guess is that standing will be in the South lower tiers (with seats retained at higher levels). The eventual model would be German style, I think, with barriers in front of each level (ie. in front of each standing fan), and probably tip-up 'rail seats' behind for use at all-seater events (or at half-time, etc.). But I don't have any firm knowledge except that our stadium design has specifically planned for "all eventualities" - safe standing or all seater - and all types of events (NFL, concerts, boxing, etc.).

No mate you hope they may go for it because that is what you want. Don't under estimate the feelings about Hillsborough that is still present

All stems from Hillsborough

to be totally honest Hillsborough was the last straw. so much had happened over the years with crowd trouble, but once that happened things really changed.

if it hadn't been for the bad history of crowd trouble the fencing around the stands wouldn't of happened, and not saying the disaster wouldn't of still happened, but the amount of lives lost would of been a lot less, which might of never meant all seated stadiums.

No genuinely, I cannot see that its even remotely similar to the previous kettling system that was used to treat all fans like caged animals. Its basically a seated area with the seat removed. All rows are kept independent from eachother. I experienced terracing in both its good form and in its worst. I would never want to return to that system either

Anyone who's ever been in a mosh pit knows it's not a great place to watch football but I think they've found a decent alternative.
