Doesn't sound good however I'm pretty sure things will be sorted out. Levy can be trusted on these matters.

A come and get me statement? Not so sure about that but its certainly possible.

50k a week is small for a player that good. Should be offered 120k at least if its gonna be his last major contract.

If, a seems likely, we're not in the market for 30m+ players, there is no excuse whatsoever for not putting Toby (and probably Vertonghen) on a par with Kane and Lloris.

I read today that Pep is looking to add a CB to his team. Make of that what you will bit i can't see why Toby's contract extension has not been sorted with or without a buyout clause.

Absolutely awesome CB. We need to reward him and keep him at Spurs for the rest of his career imo.

Imagine he went to City
Levy would go from hero to zero in one day and Conte would be proved right

This is one player we should do everything we can to keep, he is a top drawer centre back imo.

What if he wanted to go to City for wages that we couldn't possibly match, would Levy really be a zero and Conte proved right ?

I find this funny. We were the only club willing to offer him £50k a week. That's why he joined us.

He has been great for us and i would be happy to see him given a pay rise to sign a new contract. But don't act like he is doing us a favour playing for us.

In 2015, started on a 5 year contract. By 2020, he'll be 31. He's due a wage bump, granted - but will he play any more beyond his current contract? Probably not, and I would be surprised if another club tries to grab a 30 year old (ish) CB.

This will probably his last season with us then, except if we win the league or the CF. Trophies can persuade a player to stay.

There's no way - if you believe what is being stated - that Levy is gonna double his wages without the release clause being deactivated.
I know you want to keep your best players happy, but why pay someone more when he could still leave in 2 years.
With all the contract extensions they've done, there is no way that Toby hasn't been offered something. iI's a two way thing and I hope they reach an agreement.

Only @garyhopkins has put his finger on the issue. Everyone else is going on about wages. The problem here has to be the enigmatic and inconvenient "release clause".

From everything I can glean from leaks, ITK and press articles, it isn't a straightforward "pay £25m and he has to go" clause, it's more complicated, i.e., messy, than that.

But it glaringly obvious that this is what is holding up the new contract: Levy routinely demands a contract extension for any improved pay; the extension is worthless if there is any kind of release clause; in addition, the release clause hammers Alderweireld's market value, which would be anathema to Levy on principle; so the release clause has to go.

And that's a tough, time-consuming negotiation. As long as they can avoid riling Alderweireld and losing his trust, I expect he'll sign something eventually.

If we do allow a release clause for Toby then all the others would expect the same.

In Levy's recent interview he stated having having long contracts was important so that the power did not sit with the player and their agent. Why would he provide a pay rise and then give the power/control to the player and their agent.

What might be a decent release clause today may be seem cheap in a few years.....

Unfortunately we may lose Toby over this ( I really hope not) but there is a much bigger issue at stake.

Agreed. We either do ridiculous release clauses or none at all. Do your reckon Toby will accept a clause stating if he went shit we can release him with compensation of £1m? No he wouldn't. This is all player power.
