Paul Clement has apparently said that Sigurdsson's move to Everton is imminent and hinted at a cash plus player deal - sounds like it could be very close. I wonder if this development has helped us steer closer to signing Barkley. Everton may be prepared to accept an offer?

Tbh I think this is what I think JJ is hinting at. If Gylfi is almost signed for Everton then it obviously frees up Barkley - they will need to start clawing back some money with all they've spent during this window

Yeah, I'm thinking this too. It certainly fits the 'most would be happy' type GF stated as we have had a percentage who don't want him at the club.

Unless he's being used at CM I can't see Barkley getting used a great deal at Chelsea. Also Conte can't and won't develop players, he's another Guardiola/Mourinho that can't be successful unless he's backed with hundreds of millions.

I agree but...

Chavski will offer bigger wages. Also they will doubtless be easier for Everton to negotiate with in terms of fee & payment structure than Levy, so a deal could be struck relatively quickly once Siggy signs.

Hypothetically, Barkley could be faced with the following choice:

1) get paid £120-140k per week at Chavski, and back your ability to play regularly, noting that the Chavs have Champions League football this season so will have to rotate more;

2) get paid c£80k (plus Levy performance bonuses) at Spurs, but have more chance of playing regularly alongside England teammates such as Kane, Dele, Dier and Rose.

As a pure footballing decision, with Barkley at the stage where he has to start developing from "promising" to "regularlly influencing" games, then Poch and Spurs are a no brainer over Conte & the chavs.

But we've seen players convince themseles that they're good enough to take the first option.

Plus Conte may well lie to Barkley about how often he'll use him.

Yeah wouldn't put it past Conte to promise him the world. But his record with young players bar Moses has been absolutely terrible. Solanke, Abraham, Loftus-Cheek, Chalobah and Ake all cast aside. I see he's been looking for another £50m right back this summer so it won't be long until Moses is dumped too.

It's a terrible football decision to go there over us, but you can't deny the money could be attractive to him.

The point on Conte is rubbish. He turned a bang average Juventus side who were strugling to getting into the europa league places into runaway champions, with little investment. He made the most average Italian national team in a generation look like world beaters. His success has little to do with spending, and at Juve most of his big money signings were absolute failures. His greatest strength is instilling a winning mentality and getting the most out of often limited players.

Its true he doesn't put faith in youth and prefers more intelligent older players, but if you work for Conte he will work for you and the number of average players who Conte trusts and made most out is incredible. Players like Giaccherini, Matri, Eder, Moses and Parolo among others, are players who are not particularly good by any stretch of the imagination. But they are players that Conte is able to get something extra out of them, to the extent where picks them ahead of much more talented players.

Moses is hardly a young player.

why, they are the champions and have a pretty thin squad, and would probably pay him 50k per week more, over 4 years that is 10m

Sorry to be a pessimist, but I can really see him going to Chelsea. They will blow us out of the water in wages, and Conte will do anything to scupper our chances. Plus they need to add to their home grown quota.

I really hope i'm wrong, but every day this drags on it seems more and more like the Willian saga.

This is one of the reasons it bothers me that people continually go on about improvement and signings amongst other teams. Chelsea have lost two key players, replaced them probs weaker and lost a load of depth. Utd lost ibra. Liverpool haven't signed any defenders bar a hull city one for pennies, obviously teams have improved but it isn't as widespread as the media make out.
