Is there a recall option? Just in case for whatever reason the squad thins out from injuries throughout the season.

Doesnt seem to be given the way it's described 'for the season'.

I'm undecided about the merits of this. Clearly Poch has had the opportunity to assess Josh's level in pre-season. But it's a major change of philosophy for Poch, who has repeatedly insisted on keeping our best Academy prospects training with the first team, and refusing to loan them out.

If Josh gets his confidence up and plays regularly for Villa, then the experience of competitive football in a physical league will be good for him. But I've never been a fan of Bruce or his teams. He's old school tactically, and his squad is full of ageing thugs - eg Terry, Whelan, Jedinak.

The main risks are:
1) Josh doesn't play regularly;
2) Bruce plays him out of position, as a wide midfielder;
3) Josh picks up a lot of bad habits playing for a tough, cautious, techinically limited Championship team with far inferior players to ours.

Poch has said the following about Josh:
“He is a special boy, a special player, because of his talent, his potential and his body. His body is powerful and he has quality in his feet. I don't know how he will develop."

I just wonder if Poch wants Josh to have another year growing into his body type, getting physically stronger. We know that Poch likes beasts in CM eg Wanyama and Dembele. Josh looked stronger in pre-season, but in another year he may have the physique to hold his own against experienced PL midfielders.

The contract extention until 2020-21 is good news, and I hope we have a recall clause at Xmas, in case Josh tears it up at Villa.

the contract extension and loan seem connected with the messaging suggesting all is right with this move.
Perhaps @Breezer or others with ties to the youth-first team intersection can speak to this a bit more?

Well we have loaned players before who have benefited hugely from being involved in meaningful competitive games. The Championship is hard graft and I would expect him to come back a more experienced and better player

Personally think he is seen as a serious long term successor to moussa

To do that though he needs a lot of game time. Box to box midfield is probably the hardest position to master. You need everything and to master it experience is needed.

And before someone says Steve G went straight in ....... he didn't have someone as good as moussa to get in front of when learning his trade!

Loan for a year, he develops, moussa gets another year older. Next season he plays a lot more if he develops at the right rate and moussa declines at the right rate

Let's just hope he steers clear of John Terrys influence or he could be returning with not only a years first team experience but an STI and criminal record also.

Think this is wonderful just as long as josh gets the game time through the middle. Some plays need to gain the confidence by proving themselves and playing consistently on loan while others like winks have a strong natural self belief. Hopefully this loan can show poch that when constructed properly a loan can be a very beneficial developmental tool.

So, according to the Indie, we could have loaned Josh to the EPL or Celtic.

I'm not fussed about his avoiding Huddersfield & Burnley, but Brighton under Chris Hughton would have been an interesting option. I would have trusted Hughton to use Josh wisely far more than I'd trust Bruce, and he would have been testing himself against PL players week in week out.

So Onomah, unusually for someone his age, has never been on loan. At the start of the summer Huddersfield, Brighton and Burnley were all interested in taking him but Spurs said no. A good offer from Celtic, where he would have played more, was rejected too.

We've had it before though when loaning to a team that is in a relegation battle and the manager shies away from playing our loan youngster.

At Villa he'll be at a team that should be winning regularly. Onomah has a different skill set to the plodders at Villa so likely to get more game time.

Euuugh he's gonna be playing with John Terry

At the end of the day, whatever you think of them, John Terry and Steve Bruce are both uber hardworking professionals and winners. It should be a good challenge and experience for him.

interesting comment that people close to Poch convinced him to chance course a little on Josh O.

This i'd rather have him at a team at the top of the championship than bottom of pl. Not only wouldd he get more game but the team and he will have more of the ball and be more likely to play attacking football.

Disappointed.
Why? IMO its better than getting a few minutes here and there when he has four others above him in the pecking order for CM. He is still a part of us as the club has extended his contract. His loan deal will now allow TOB or Edwards more game time with the 1st 11

That's very interesting, how well informed is jack Pitt-Brooke normally ?

He says the same things many of us have been saying for two years about Poch not trusting Onomah in CM.

Like you I've mixed emotions about this loan. For me, of those mentioned, Celtic under Rodgers would have been my first choice, he'd get to play a very decent brand of football for a dominant team and also get to play in Europe (CL maybe) and I think it would have been easier (less risky) for Rodgers to fit him in under less pressure than struggling PL sides.

I do think if Poch isn't going to trust him in CM though that he's better off going and playing some proper football than another year of understudying Sissoko at the training ground. Just not sure Villa/Bruce and the championship is the best place?

It really pisses me off that Poch places so much "trust" in a CM cart horse like Dier but shits himself about giving Onomah a chance.
