The game today just reiterates to me how valuable his pace would be at the back. Even though we are very solid, the two area's that still really worry me are balls over the top and set pieces. Very excited about the prospect of this signing and the added balance it will give to our back line.

The Lyall Thomas article strikes me as nothing more than clickbait - I reckon he'd seen the noise on Twitter about a potential Chelsea gazumping and thought he'd get a piece of the action while he had everyone's attention.

As for the supposed Chelsea gazumping, that story looks like it may well have come from one single source; and that source was one Dutch journalist's speculation about possible Chelsea interest rather than anything concrete.

For me I think the deal is already done and will be announced early next week, possibly even tomorrow. There seemed to be too many people emphatically stating over the weekend that the deal was agreed for it not to be done and I suspect the only reason for the delay in any announcement is because Ajax are publicly listed and will need to make such an announcement to the stock market first. The rest of the noise in between is just PR management from Ajax's side imo.

I'm not worried about Chelsea, I think those rumours are fake.
What worries me is those numbers they are throwing around. If we are spending 50m in Sanchez, we've gone crazy

Poch again today made very firm comments about the need to make several "quality" signings to cope with the demands of Champions League football. If anyone can leverage Levy into spending significantly, it's Poch. He holds all the cards, and Levy will not want to do anything to upset him.

Furthermore, Richard Scudamore noted last week that the Premier League is anticipating another rise in the coming television deal for the 2019-2022 seasons, which will be bid on in the coming months. If that happens, an already inflated market is going to get even more inflated as mid-table teams spend huge amounts to try to solidify themselves as Premier League mainstays.

Spending big this summer to bolster an already great squad hitting their peak makes a lot of sense if you think about the fact that our revenue will likely hit 300 million pounds this season and possibly rise to well over 375 million pounds next season with the new stadium gate receipts and naming rights deal.

Sanchez would be the first of those quality signings to build a complete squad capable of fulfilling Pochettino's ambition. Ajax are a selling club. They've rarely turned away big moneyed suitors for their players in the last five years.

There's a limited pot of money to be spent, and a fairly specific list of positions left to fill, albeit there may be a little flexibility.
Nobody knows the actual figure we have allocated for incoming signings, although a guesstimate taking into account previous summer's zero net spend, would be around £100m ish, based on £50m Walker, £17m Bentaleb, £3m Fazio, £8m Njie and probably around £20m Wimmer, plus £5m ish sell on for Sigurdsson.
From that, based on the positions we have been linked with, we want a RB, CB, AM and WF.
Sanchez at CB circa £35m apparently.
Barkley at AM circa £25-30m rumoured.
Leaves £35-40m for a RB and WF/CF.
So £25m ish for a WF/CF and £15m ish for a RB? Seem reasonable?
Suppose Sissoko's future may have an impact also?

Being a bit idealistic about it, I wouldn't mind a decent summer of squad shaping, players around 20-24, so they are peaking over the next season or two. Hopefully one marquee signing next summer, no more, and start to integrate players from the academy going forward.

Nobody is going to be paying 50m for this guy. Ajax doing their best, especially after the player has stated very strongly he has no interest in talking on a new contract. From my very well connected Dutch sources. Furthermore, he does not want to be bullied in staying. Interesting times.
