I agree. The other thing this does is prevents Alonso from pushing high up the pitch too, as he in turn is scared to over commit incase his opposing player exposes the space he's left. At WHL last year Walker and Rose had the pair of them pinned back the entire game and they really suffered. Like you say Trippier just doesn't pose that threat, unfortunately.
Yep. Trips will be awesome against poor to middling teams but a real tenacious, tough, direct RB would definitely have made a difference today. I've said this so much this evening already but while our team are decent passers and move all the time, we need some serious speed, technique, tenacity and passing/ crossing qualities to negate the quality sides that are happy to concede possession. Aurier would be a decent addition but a quality WF is also needed

In ideal world I'd play a back 3 with Rose and Aurier as wing backs against the top 6. Then against rest you rotate the full backs (always one pacey one playing) and start Son or hopefully a new pacey attacking player.

We're not lacking technique. The way our players play one-touch pinball around the opposition is awesome to behold at times.
Dembele and Dele certainly have tenacity - as does The Llama.
Speed and crossing I'll give you, although Trippier's delivery is usually far better than today.

We need someone of this ilk as trippier is just not Upto playing wingback, not pacey or powerful enough and not a particularly good defender either.

Has anyone done some in depth research into when his hearing/appeal whatever it is should be finalised by? Can't see this one being done quickly if all this legal stuff is hanging over him. Unless it's literally all signed/sealed already and just needs confirming

Serge Aurier is a very popular player this summer, the team tells us in its paper edition of the day. But his situation is slow to be resolved, due to administrative problems, but also in the expectation of resolving his setbacks with the French justice system. Indeed, the sports newspaper explains that the player made an application for French naturalization. Aurier had already attempted a first request, when he was still a player of RC Lens, refused by the administration. According to Aurier's entourage, Aurier has redone an application and Jean-Claude Blanc, the club's deputy general manager, has been trying for several weeks to find a solution to settle the case without success. This nationality award would be a boon for the player,

Then, in the case of violence against a policeman (for which he was sentenced to two months in prison, an appeal still pending) his lawyer tries to obtain, in vain, an official document formalizing the decision call. This decision, according to L'Equipe, has already been taken but would not have been made public. According to the newspaper, the player will not be sentenced to prison. This document is essential to apply for an entry visa for England, without which it will not be able to enter the British territory. He will then have to apply for a work visa. Clubs interested in the player would follow this situation carefully. Some clubs have even contacted the lawyer of the player to find out where the file is.

Sorry if I'm already repeating what someone else has already said but just to clarify..

We are waiting for formal documentation which would guarantee that he would not have to serve time in prison for his violence offence, and would also allow him to apply for an entry visa and work permit? If so, this formal decision would be the decisive factor in allowing him a move to us.

Also, the matter of 'French naturalisation'. Does that mean he would no longer be eligible to play for the Ivory Coast, and would therefore be allowed to play for the French national team instead? Similar to Zaha's switch from England to Ivory Coast.. That bit seems a bit confused.

I have no idea but would presume it just means he would have a French passport and therefore, for now, could enter the UK on EU terms. If hes played competitive matches for IC, I'm pretty sure you cant swap nations.

No. One can legally have citizenship of as many countries as they like. And he can't play for any other national side - he's an Ivory Coast international.

Cool, cheers @Ben1

Yep, just to confirm.. An interesting article regarding the great Di Stefano..

The practice of professional footballers changing their nationality (in most cases from their nation of birth) to play international football has been in action for many decades now. For example, the legendary Alfredo Di Stefano played six times for Argentina, his nation of birth, before representing his adopted nation, Spain, 31 times.

He was able to play for Spain after he acquired Spanish citizenship even though he had already represented Argentina in official games. But according to current FIFA rules, such a change can happen only if the player has not represented any country in their senior team’s official matches.

The decision to move the next AFCON from Jan/Feb to June/July, next one is in 2019 btw, can only be a good thing for African football and their players.. Only just found this out.

To be picky - it actually depends on the country as to whether you can hold multiple passports... sorry couldn't help myself.

Wouldn't be surprised if Aurier was Plan A and should it not go through or he not be allowed a work permit Santiago Arias would be Plan B.

Either way I think we'll get a new RB by the time the window shuts.
Where are you getting any Arias links from mate? I don't remember even seeing a thread for him.
Just found the thread. Doesn't look amazing from the vids about if I'm honest.

I watch a lot of Ligue 1 as well and I have been the biggest/earliest proponent (not necessarily of course but you know what I mean) of this move. I was championing this before Walker was sold. I felt that we should bring him in irrespective of that move because he was a better player than both Walks or Trips. He is not quite as quick as Walker (but who is?) but does have great pace. From equal starting positions he will not be outpaced by many forwards.

His technical ability and reading of the game more than makes up for the relative pace deficit to Walker. Like Walks he will shut down our defensive right side. Teams will not get much joy over there as his aggressiveness and tackling will strike fear in players minds. And that is what you want from you FB. But he will bring more offensively by being able to actually pass a ball, control a ball on the move, and cross it first time into dangerous positions. He will not cross it as well as Trips (but again, who does?). But he is superior to trips in every other category...by a large margin. I expect KWP to surpass Trips this year anyway and become backup for next.

The only question mark(s) have been repeated ad nauseam in here. It was clear he was available after Alves' move. It was also clear that although PSG rotated (he played half the league games), Muenier seemed to be Emery's favored RB due to his offensive edge. What wasn't clear was whether we would investigate the situation. I hoped we would. I'm glad we did. I hope it works out for all parties (and that includes some club PR work to assuage the concerns of those that feel uneasy about the move and some maturity on Aurier's part to repay the faith). I'm American; I like underdogs and 2nd chances.

After yesterday and reading this I want a new right back even more and I agree that Aurier is a good player. I think he's the one we should go for. Don't want to get my hopes up though as the chances of this coming off must be quite slim

I personally think this will happen if his law situation sorts itself out. Think he is eager to come here. Would be a fantastic signing as well. Probably overall better than Walker and makes us huge at the back.

I don't care what international team he plays for as long as he is out of prison to do it.
That's if he signs for us of course, if he doesn't then they can bang him up for life.

Really, really hope we can get this over the line. A superb player and will improve us.

I know he has his problems but if Poch wants him and thinks he's not going to be a problem within the squad. £20m is a snip.
