Means we could go into next summer with a strategy of retaining our players and signing another CB (if we're playing 3 at the back) and a CF (if anyone's available).

Quality!!
A transfer strategy for next summer, what a difference that would be. Making signings early and decisively so that our manager could work with them most of pre season, perish the thought. It would mean paying pretty much what the selling club want , we all know how clever we try to be when negotiating purchases.

And who knows if any new signings with a pre season might have made the difference today ?
Obviously multi million £ transfers are complicated things to get right but ooh to have had a pacy winger today, would have been worth paying extra early to wipe the smug faces of those chelsea staff

Reading between the lines, I think the point Levy and Poch have made is that we have to wait for the very biggest clubs to splash the cash. We can then make our moves without such a big fear of being gazumped

Are you taking the piss ? He would have been a little boy lost up against men.

I think a fairer point would of been a player that can receive the ball in tight spaces and use their close control and ability to beat a man on the edge of the box could have made a difference. Until Son came on we had too many of the same types of player trying the same type of thing. We were crying out for someone other than Dembele to try and beat players.

Edwards might not be that person but he has the right profile.

Completely agree. I think if we could have snuck a Lemar over the line early doors we would have done but we were never going to get into bidding wars and seem much happier dealing no the market is a little less hot.

Yup. I suspect we register interest in a number of potential targets but don't let on which ones we are 'serious' about (or we think are realistic) until the big dogs have eaten. Keita Balde for instance was a real target and we thought (according to JJ I believe) that it was 'on' and were really stung when Juve came back in and 'turned his head' against joining us.

Ryan Sessegnon - Sky sources are saying Tottenham are contemplating a bid for the Fulham defender. We're also hearing there is significant interest from Manchester United. From Fulham's perspective, only a bid that's too good to refuse would be acceptable. If United sign him, they'd consider immediately loaning him back to the Championship club. We are told Fulham are likely to stay strong - at least in this window

True but it just takes 1 wealthy club to outbid us
Surely there are not that many clubs like that. Aside from the few extremely wealthy clubs like PSG and City who will do whatever it takes to get the best players. I think a majority of clubs would just match our bid and try and convince the player to join. It wouldn't make sense if we bid £28m on a player which is enough for the selling club and then someone else come and bid more. Only a club like Chelsea would use those type of tactics.

As long as we match the asking price for a player we should at least stand a chance. I would say the wages are the biggest obstacle when it comes to the top players. Players like Sessegnon who are young and on Fulham wages are much more realistic for us.

On a separate note I think this could do an Alli in his first season. Not that we should put that expectation on him but he's certainly capable.
