We have a brilliant forensic team behind the scenes, second to none.

Chances are other clubs have had him as a backup if his conviction clears. If we've gone ahead and said we want him as first choice, and tried to work with him on the legalities, maybe that's put us ahead of the pack.

Most of the players we've signed over the last 20 years would have probably preferred utd.

Yes, I totally agree with that. Maybe the last couple of years have blighted my judgement but it's nice to hear the likes of Barkley, Sancho, and Sessengon seemingly wanting us above all others. I appreciate it doesn't apply to all though.

Our financial position requires us to take risks

Another good point, and again I agree with you on the whole. But this is an even bigger risk than we would usually take in some ways is it not?

The player has had his disciplinary issues as we've discussed to death, and although I'm behind his signing, I do think it is surprising that Poch would want the possible hassle of dealing with that sort of player after taking the time to remove the previous 'bad Apple's' in the dressing room.

Also, I don't think the big risk here is a financial one as you allude to. We could have spent possibly more on the other right backs which ITK have mentioned so slightly different scenario.

Where is BC?
He must be banned because he would surely be in this thread moaning as to why we are blocking the path of KWP without thinking sense that it would be a mistake having just him and trippier as our full backs especially after seeing that draw in the CL

He was in the youth thread earlier.

I think I saw it mentioned earlier in the window that he was banned from the transfer section?

I think what Herc is saying is on an open market with no personal issues Utd would have gone hard and got him. We've had a look, sensed an opportunity and got a deal agreed. This is a top drawer player here.

I'm sure Aurier appreciates that effort from us and by the sounds of it he's met Poch and is impressed. I'd imagine he's looking forward to playing for us now, seems proud enough to talk to journos about it.

Maybe he thinks Poch is attractive.

Good points. I think the differentiating feature here though is the players you mentioned above are still trying to make it, so as a top development club we are a perfect fit. Aurier already has at PSG, he's the kind of player the top European clubs tend to trade amongst themselves (see Juve, Utd links) which makes it very exciting assuming his off field issues are in the past.

If not for the legal wrangling SA would probably have been demanding KW fee. At 28m he's relatively cheap in current market, and maybe not as risky financially. On matter of his disciplinary record, I think for a top talent we have to take a bigger gamble than we normally would weighted against the fee we possibly feel this an opportuity to get a player who would normally have been going to Utd or Juve

I think he'd love this signing tbh. Watches a lot of the French league, Aurier is fucking quality and iirc he's not hugely convinced by Trippier.

I asked BC about his opinions on Aurier via a PM. After initially ignoring me, he did eventually reply. Of course, BC being BC, there was a negative tone to his reply.

My take on this is, he's removed bad apples bought in by previous regimes. In this instance, he obviously feels he's on the front foot from the off. No doubt it's been made crystal clear that club will not tolerate six behaviour. There is a strong culture within the current squad, built off the back of removing the previous trouble makers, that is quite probably able to reign Aurier in if needed through peer pressure.
