I do believe I see Spursy thoughts everywhere because of an average and disappointing (as usual lol) start to the season.
Spursy believes that the team that played like bloody warriors for the last half of last season, with fantastic results, have vanished in a puff of smoke.
Spursy believes we should be top of the league NOW, and that Wembley is cursed for us and August is cursed for Harry Kane.
Spursy believes the world is conspiring against us.
Spursy is being Spursy.

We struggle against Liverpool and City, they both have so much pace. It's understandable we yearn for that as an extra weapon.

I think you can add Burnley to that list....

Agree about Liverpool, and City both leave us in their slipstream when it comes to counter attacking. Woolwich were destroyed by it on Sunday. Much as i hate to say it they looked tremendous, and Klopp has made some very good signings.

But we do have Sissoko...........

Dealing with pace and having pace ourselves is a completely different thing.

Liverpool currently play a very different style to us so to compare the two is a bit of a waste of time.

As others have said though, we need players who can move the ball quickly, whether that's through passing or taking it on themselves. At the moment, other than Eriksen, we don't have that speed of thought that allows us to create gaps when teams sit deep.

Sissoko
Failed diao attempt
And 50/50 attempt at aurier

Suggests the coach thinks we need some actual pace in the team

We need attacking players (whose standard position is high up the pitch, so not wing backs or attacking full backs) who are happy to start or run wide, and take the ball down the wing. Everything is too narrow high up the pitch, we don't make the opposition think about their flanks, and it allows them to crowd the central spaces where we are trying to pass the ball through.

Kane is the central striker, so understandable he wants to stay central. Alli, even when on the left of the three behind, doesn't want to attack the byline, he wants to work himself central. Eriksen will cross from wide positions but he wont be hitting the byline, and will tend to move infield, Son wants to play on the left and cut inside but at least is happy to take a starting position that is wide.

It just makes us a bit too predictable, and if teams are of sufficient quality (Chelsea) or just well drilled/organised and play well (Burnley) we struggle to make our dominant possession count. Have that other option and suddenly the opposition have decisions to make.

When we play 3 at the back, we need FBs that offer pace and can attack the opposing fullback one-v-one or even get in behind them while still having the pace to get back. It is hurting us right now in the neither Davies or Trippier have the pace to play FB at the level of Rose/Walker in that system. I know that they can both cross the ball but both are doing it into a packed box because neither offer the threat of beating their man down the outside. (Trippier has had one successful take on since he has been here is a stat I ready earlier this morning.) Speed of play (mental and touch) along with pace is the ideal but we definitely need more pace to stretch teams.

Agreed, but even with the 3-X-X with flying wing backs, we can sometimes lack proper width high up the pitch when we are building up the play. If I was up against the Spurs of last season, with Walker and Rose, I would let us have the ball, crowd the middle, and slow down our tempo as much as possible so the wing backs could not burst forward into space.

With high end width you can either drag the oppo's defence wide, and/or force their wide men back thus stretching whoever they have in central midfield to cover the width of the pitch higher up. That either gives more space to play the ball into, or more space for the ball players to operate.

Again, its not needed all the time but when we need to break down well organised teams we need to provide several threats and with the vogue for three centre backs the natural threat to it is width high up the pitch early as well as arriving later from deep, like a wing back

And that's why we need a player or 2 that can put the fear of God in an opposing Defender, Davies and Trips are good Technical players and good passers of the ball but I wouldn't worry about them taken on a guy and crossing to anyone for a goal etc

Out of the guys you mentioned GKN is the only 1 to show promise, last Season GKN & Danny Rose there was like a 2 game stretch where they really worried other teams Defenders, Njie was never a Poch type he had 1 glimpse of what he could do, that is when we played vs Manchester City I think in 2015/16 and he beat his man, crossed to Lamela who scored, Sissoko = panic buy never good enough and I personally don't rate him, Championship Guy, if New Castle United were getting 30 Mill for him I bet they said while smiling with an evil grin Deal.

Our attack doesnt need pace, what we need is for players to trust each other. i lost count the number of times we outnumbered defenders during a counter attack only for a mousa, ali, or whoever to make a back pass or side pass.
Son used to play quick one twos but recently has been doing the same. its a negative culture thats deeply rooted in the team

This i think is the reason why players are so static. They know its pointless making runs behind the defence because them teammates is not going to make that pass. The midfield always go for the safe pass.

the only time we were any good was us vs man c with son leading the line and sisoko charging down the flanks. lots of movement and quick one twos

I don't remember the last time a team won the league without either:

A) a player or players that can out sprint the opposition defence without the ball

Or

B) a player or players that can run fast with the ball in the final 3rd, beat their man and deliver some sort of quality

We have neither of these players at the moment in our team. Having one of these options would be of great benefit to us imo.

1. Yes, pace can work in our game plan. Both Man City and Liverpool plays possession football, and they have a lot of pace.
2. A player can have pace in both their head and in their legs, e.g. Mane.

A team working togheter as a unit is the most important thing in football, but sometimes you need a player like Mane or Hazard when the unit is broken. Eriksen is not a good dribbler and isn't that fast. The same goes for Alli. Son got some pace, but he's not a good dribbler. We need our own Mane or Hazard, a player with pace and dribbling skills. It would make us less one dimensional. Because sometimes we can be a little one dimensional.

We don't need a player who can run 100m at record pace. We compete within a possession based paradigm, not a sprint paradigm. What we do need though, are players who can run quickly with the ball in their feet, and in other ways move the ball super quickly, which is a whole different sort of pace.

Yep, that kind of trickery is important in unlocking defenses. A player like Robben (who Mane is starting to resemble a lot) is the prime example. He can use his pace against a team that sits deep or against a team that plays a high line.

I personally dont think its so much pace at times which has been our problem.but at times we do seem to have alot of similiar players which dont have pace on the pitch however the issue is more around a lack if movement or speed of thought in getting the ball into threatening areas of the pitch

If pace were all important then Liverpool wouldn't have struggled so much against teams who set up to defend deep for the last couple of seasons.

What we want are intelligent ball playing attackers who are also rapid. They are probably the most expensive thing to buy in football at the moment - see Neymar as the most extreme version.

I think pace in the full back position is perhaps the most important for us due to the way that we play and look to overload that part of the pitch and so perhaps Davies and Trippier are currently making this look worse than it is? Hopefully Rose will return at some point and Aurier hits the ground running (running - geddit?!?!) to help with this.
