Personally I think they were after a pacy attacking player, but we also needed real cover for Kane & that is what Llorente is. He may not be quick, but he's a big lump that has scored goals wherever he's play, as he proved with Swansea last year, so can hopefully do a job that unfortunately Janssen is struggling to do.

I will take good football intelligence, good in the air, good link up play, lots of experience and proven prem goals over pace any day.

We bought llorente instead of a pacy wide forward? I was willing to give Janssen another season but instead we buy over 30 year old slow striker which doesn't make any sense to me at all..
Brave post!

Can anyone explain to me why

Well, it goes back to the days of the Welsh Horse Yeomanry, during their relocation from Egypt to Palestine, sometime around the middle of 1917.

As it was the fashion at the time, when traveling against the wind, the Welsh would tie little bow's in the ends of their giant moustaches, using an early form of dental floss. This helped to prevent their magnificent facial hair getting tangled in their tack and the 600 shiny buttons that they wore on the front of their uniforms, but over time it was also seen as a sign of "peace", that the unit was not currently involved in hostilities and were open to being approached by local children to receive sweets and teeth looted form the bodies of dead bush-pirates.

During one stop over at a small village near the Palestinian border they came across a horse trough that contained a tiny, tiny boat bearing a flag emblazoned with a silver rabbit wearing a cummerbund.

And that's why Columbians celebrate Christmas by tickling their most elderly relative to death and falsifying the insurance certificate.

I have my doubts if llorente is the right fit for us but we definitely had to upgrade on janssen, he had a decent amount of time on the pitch last season and he showed little imo.
I think the pacey wide forward is a separate issue, would have been nice to add to son but we did ok last season with what we have now

Pace isn't everything. It's a phrase that people with little football intelligence bang on about because they can't figure out a reason why we struggle in certain games. The default answer is 'we need more pace'. Apparently pace is the answer to all problems.

Our pace will come from Aurier and Rose when he's back, that's where we need our pace to overlap and create space.

You're clearly forgetting the time we won the treble with Darren Bent and Aaron Lennon.

Agreed...what we need is someone who can pull a well drilled defense out of shape. A tricky dribbler/passer like Modric can do that....a pacy winger like Bale can do that. To some degree Dembele does do that for us. We have the players like Kane and Dele than can completely exploit mistakes and openings but at times we seem to lack someone that can create an opening or opportunity. I've felt all along that this club needs another Modric more than another Bale but that's my opinion.

There's an inappropriate and possibly wrong pacemaker joke in here somewhere dying to come out.

"Pacey winger" has just become one of those phrases like "have to win a title" that media pundits and idea punters have talked so much Spurs fans have absorbed them as necessities rather than just punditry laziness.

I am assuming that this will be Poch's preferred formation this season [3-4-2-1]...

GK
RCB CB LCB
RWB CM CM LWB
AM AM
CF
I would say Poch prefers intelligent players over pace in his AM/CF roles (see Rodriguez/Lambert/Lallana at Soton). Movement and creativity are much more important in these roles. Pace in the WB roles is much more important to his system, and thus Rose and Aurier will be key players for us. Son does offer us genuine pace up top too. Some may have forgotten, but we were the top scorers in the league last year. How far we have come eh?

These are the players we have in the first team squad:

GK: Lloris, Vorm, young lad from Soton
CBs: Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Foyth, Dier
RWB: Aurier, Trippier, KWB
LWB: Rose, Davies
CM: Dembele, Wanyama, Dier, Winks,
AM: Dele, Eriksen, Lamela, Son, <Barkley>, Edwards, N'Koudou, Sissoko,
CF: Kane, Llorente, Jannsen

My thoughts on that missing pacey wide forward
  • If Poch really wanted one we'd have one. Or N'Koudou would see more minutes.
  • Barkley was probably the missing piece of Poch's jigsaw - shame he had such a bad injury.
  • Lamela will be like a new signing if he finally recovers from injury.
  • We will have massive competition for places in the AM roles this season.

He's won a World Cup
He's won a European Championship
He's won a Europa League
He's won three Serie A title
He's won three domestic Italian Cups
He's scored goals in the Prem

Do you need anymore reasons?

I'm guessing the original poster was on here saying Modric was too lightweight for the Premier League, that VDV didn't have the pace for the Premier League, that we must do/buy better than Alderwiereld who had only had one good season at Southampton in this league.

The reality is, the more experienced the player...the better they seem to do.

People are going to be singing his praises when he thumps in a header against a rival (known as a big game player), or holds up the ball better than we've seen here in a long time. Not to mention being in the right place at the right time for goals. He's done it everywhere he's gone.

If anything he's been severely underrated over his career. People will learn.

Yep. My biggest concern is when Eriksen is missing. Hopefully we get Barkley in Jan but in the meantime I hope Winks can offer something.
