Following comments made by his advisor, as reported by The Sun, it appears that Tottenham Hotspur may struggle to keep Toby Alderweireld at the club much longer.

It's not plausible that Levy and THFC are being obstinate about wages. They have a long record of rewarding good performance with improved wages and no one would argue that Alderweireld is not one of our 2-3 best players. It would be perverse and inconsistent for them to refuse to increase his wages, in exchange for a longer period of contractually-secured service.

So I conclude that the article's focus on salary is journo-auto-pilot and therefore bullshit. The unresolved issue has to be about something else. The prime candidate is the so-called "release clause". Levy isn't going to give a player more money unless the player agrees to a longer contract, which has to mean tying himself to THFC for a longer period. Any kind of release clause would defeat that purpose.

Some of this seems like agent speak, saying pay up or he could go. In fairness from the rumours it does seem like he's underpaid so I hope Levy will see sense and offer a reasonable rise then everybody wins.

I think the club may be quite relaxed about this. I believe he's 30 years old and that his contract runs out in another two years. So he'll be 32 by the time we have to let him go for free.

Of course, by that time I would imagine Sanchez will be one of the world's best central defenders at the age of only 23 so that may be on the club's minds.
