Early goal for Everton and we're up shit creek without a paddle with that line up. You could say fair enough if we'd been playing like the end of last season but following a shaky start that's either going to be a stroke of genius by Poch or an unmitigated disaster.

I wouldn't mind seeing Eriksen playing a slightly withdrawn role, almost alongside Dier, allowing Sissoko to push forward. He'd have various options ahead of him.

How do we know Sissoko hasn't been showing form in training? It's not impossible. He's started very few games for us - it's mainly been stop/start sub appearances. Maybe - stay with me here - he's ok, but just hasn't shown it in-game.

Looks like this to me:

Lloris
Alderweireld Sanchez Vertonghen
Trippier Dier Sissoko Davies
Eriksen Dele
Kane

Though it could well be:

Lloris
Alderweireld Sanchez Vertonghen
Trippier ___________________ Davies
Dier Sissoko
Eriksen
Dele Kane

Hopefully it's Sissoko actually playing in his correct position for once in central midfield. Got no problem whatsoever with him in there with Dier....COYS

How do I put this politely?

Oh, no. I neither can nor want to. WHAT THE FUCK IS SISSOKO DOING IN THE STARTING LINE-UP?

FFS.

Let's be honest - that's not a title winning centre midfield. Maybe not even a top four centre midfield. Would love it if the opposition were playing a Dier-Sissoko partnership.

We really need someone who can pass the ball quickly from the midfield and speeds up our game. So why is Winks on the bench once again?

But they're both playing DM? What's the problem with Dier playing there when Wanyama is injured?
The might nominally play in the same position, but surely you can see that there is a massive difference in the way that they play the position?

Wanyama is a mobile ball winner who can carry it forward and use strength to go past players. ie. Exactly the type of player you need to partner a ball player when the midfield need to cover the channels that the wing backs vacate in a back 3 system.

Dier on the other hand gets behind the ball, likes to split the centrebacks, receive to feet, rarely carry and play reasonably simple passes mixed with the odd cross field ball. The entire purpose of a player like that in a back 4 is to split the CB's and effectively play with 3 CB's when bringing the ball out from the back. But that type of player just isn't necessary when playing a back 3. He's not mobile enough to do the 'hunting' role that Wanyama does; it's pretty much like playing 4 CB's all centrally. It results in a complete lack of - to borrow a BC-ism - vim or 'football' in the middle of the park.

Hopefully Sanchez is playing the right of the 3 to cover Tripps' corner when he goes missing on counters. I'd let Trpps go on and get balls in and be conservative with Davies as Holgate will rinse him on that side.

OK so what should we do instead? You don't want Dier or Sissoko to play so what should our midfield be, assuming Dembele and Winks aren't fit enough to start.

Sheesh, I feel the opposite. His touch and weight of pass is so bad. Anyway, let's see what he can do.
