Would King get in?

Would Ledley King get in the current first XI?

The other thing to consider is just how much better King made other defenders look.

He played with some real dross at times but always made them look better than they clearly were.

Imagine him doing that to any of our current back three!

I thought this would be a lot closer than it's turning out to be honest

Whisper it quietly but I'd still have Ledley partnered by Rsol if we were playing a back 4

At there best that partnership would have been absolutely ridiculous

Definitely. He'd get in as the 3rd centre back (Sanchez's role) and, though this really won't be popular, if you played a back four he'd also currently get in instead of a post-injury Alderweireld.

Definitely agree with this. Toby has had a noticeable drop off since his injury. Of course, he is still a bloody great defender but his reading of the game and execution has been less seamless since his injury.

So 73% so far have said King gets in as a third centre-back. I'm curious who, if our squad is fully fit, you lot are all leaving on the bench?

King would get in any team, the others can scrap it out for the remaining spots but a fit King is the best possible CB.

Fully fit he'd easily make it in as 1st pick but he was barely ever fully fit. Do you put him in and have a continually disrupted defence? Or leave him out and value a consistent defence more?

I think I'd leave him out :-(

Some people have short memories, or simply weren't old enough when he was playing regular.

King was imperious in his pomp. Cast your mind back to those 4 games leading up to our first CL qualification. Impassable. Not only was his reading of the game near psychic, he was the most composed CB I've seen, and hardly ever made a foul when dispossessing or tackling. In addition his touch, vision and accuracy on the ball was as perfect as you would see this side of Franco Baresi.

To quote Edgar Davids:
One player people don’t ask me about but should is Ledley King. Left and right foot perfect, fast, almost never made a foul. Technically, he is so gifted. So relaxed on the ball. But those knees.

And also arch nemesis, Terry Henry:
I don't like defenders who hold the shirts of other players. The only defender here who doesn't do that and sometimes still gets the ball off my feet easily is Ledley King.

He is the only guy who doesn't hold players. He will get the ball off you without you even noticing. For me, that is a good defender.

He plays without any contact yet is somehow still strong and gets the ball without doing any fouls.

Toby is the closest to him in the current squad, but in a 2 man defence, King is the... well, king (sorry Jan). With him in our back 3, that's the best defence in the land, if not Europe.

King is the best CB I've ever seen play the game, and even my dad - who is an arch "everything old was better" type guy says he'd put him in the double winning side, and I think the only other modern era player he's ever said that about was Hoddle (Bale would make the bench).

This is a guy who was the best CB in the country when he had half of one knee left. He should've been England captain for a decade, not talentless traditional English lumps like Terry and Upson.

Ledley also loved a goal - he really could've played anywhere on the pitch and done a decent job.

King starts in any line-up you want to mention. As part of a three between Toby and Jan he'd have been utterly sublime. Feel sorry for him he only got to play for us when we were shit.

That's the thing, you never knew if he was going to be able to play until the morning of the match, his knee could flare up at any time and at least 10 games a season he'd be out. He couldn't train with the team because of his knee problems, which would make it difficult for Poch to plan formations as well as breaking with Poch's mantra of playing the players who perform in training. All of this makes it even more incredible when you think how phenomenal a player he was, but we didn't have the options back then that we do now.

Let's say Ledley's in our squad now, he's out injured and Sanchez continues his impressive form for the next few games. When Ledley's back do you put him straight in the team, breaking up a successful partnership? Before it used to be the case of dropping a Bassong or a Kaboul, hardly a difficult decision, but now it's replacing a strong, dependable partnership. Not so clear cut IMO.

If he'd have remained fit throughout his career we'd have barely seen John Terry in an England shirt. Shame. I feel for younger fans who never really got to appreciate him in his prime.

The question is would the other guys get in, Ledley was the most complete player I've ever seen in a Spurs shirt

Pointless saying yeah but he wasn't fit, the whole scenario is hypothetical so why put that limitation on it? It's no slight on Jan or Toby saying they wouldn't get in over one of the most gifted defenders of his generation
