the Premier League and Champions League. obviously. so now tell me why it's not possible to do that and still make a real effort to win one of the other cups

to make a big effort on all 4 trophies with allowing for most of our squad playing international matches our key players could have to play 66+ matches, and could end up with nothing. then a good few players will then go to play in the world cup, and shortly after start another season.

they are not robots even if they are paid a fortune

how many games do key players at other clubs play then?

well a few Manure players played over 50 last season, but it also cost them getting a top 4. had they lost the final of the EL their season would of been a failure, as they suffered a lot of big injuries, but they have a lot bigger squad depth of players than we do.

we don't have that depth or experience, and we really need/have to take CL into the new stadium. no CL could cost us a massive fortune in the naming rights

what are you basing this on? we are about to have one of the finest sports arenas in all the world, in one of the most important cities in the world. you really think we're going to lose out on naming rights money just because we happen to miss out on CL football for a year?

are you this pessimistic about everything? you must be fun at parties.

I'm basing it on whoever sponsors us will pay more for a team involved in the CL, compared to a team that finish 8th because they went all out for everything and ended up with nothing

Ultimately, I don't think we'll miss out on the top 4 this year. We probably won't match the point total of last year but we don't need to. Fortunately for us, Liverpool & Arsenal are utter dogshit.

Anyone else think Poch looks very very tired and stressed?

All his interviews and press conferences lately he seems to be keeping a lid on losing his shit.

Not his usual happy-go-lucky self.

you keep referring to focusing solely on the domestic cups, which is not an argument I or anyone else on here is making.

the pundits, media, bookies, most of our fans and most football fans in general all declared the PL over as a contest very early in the New Year. if you thought differently, then we'll just have to agree to disagree, which I'm more than happy to do.

I've not really been happy with our approach to what we consider the "minor" cups for a few years now, going back to before Pochettino arrived, but definitely including his time here, regardless of the strength of the lineups in a handful of specific games. we could've made a better fist of the Europa League over the last few seasons, and doing so would've made a big difference to our current coefficient as well as getting us into the CL if we won it. I don't think we've been as good as we could've in the domestic cups either. these trophies seem to be considered to be beneath us, yet we're not good enough to seriously contend for the bigger ones. I get that not everyone is bothered about winning these, but I definitely would like to. I'm not necessarily criticising Pochettino if he's not that concerned about them, it's just disappointing that he appears not to think we can go for those and still achieve our greater objectives, like other big clubs do.

Sorry, isn't that the point of the thread, Poch has put the league and the CL as a priority and the domestic cups as secondary, what argument are you making. Also in regards to our challenge I had pretty much those very same people still saying saying that we were still challenging for the title, Sky were a perfect example of this...Even though we were chasing we were still challenging but yeah agree to disagree or whatever, this discussion isn't really going anywhere anyway lol

He isn't right though, because it's just one example, and a terrible one with no relevance to us. We're not in a relegation fight, we're not going to end up in League One because we won the FA Cup.

We're a team that needs to win something, and soon. We're realistically not winning the league or CL in the next two seasons with the stadium move and Wembley, and winning a cup doesn't mean some kind of automatic finish outside the top four as is being implied.
Wigan may not be a great example, but his point is a good one, 'cause he knows what our priorities are and the resources that he has at his disposal to target those. Our squad is a good one, but City, Utd, maybe Chels, only 'cause they've slipped this season, have more depth. Arse and Liverpool will be challenging as usual. It's also our Wembley season with all the challenges that that brings.

We'll be scrapping for top 4 this season...and that's the most important goal, and I still don't rule out a PL title challenge. Helps keep the squad together, attract new talent etc., And we gain more experience each year in the CL. Getting a good run in the CL this year's also a priority. Those priorities alone will mean necessary squad rotation.

We may have to drop into the EL at some point, that's another big draw on resources; love the FA Cup, saw us win it in '81 and '82, but again, at what cost? If we're fighting to get top 4 at the same time we have cup games, Poch's going to manage the squad to suit his priorities and the club's future interest.

The League Cup, if we win it, will be very nice and all, the FA Cup even better, but the game's shifted in terms of the value of prizes at the top level. Think Poch knows what's best for Spurs and our future. I'd love a domestic cup, but not at the expense of a top 4 finish, which is a trophyless prize that has more value for us as a club going forward.

Storm in a teacup - actually says he would love to win one of the cups - but that he wont priorise them over the league or champions league, whats the big deal ? Honestly people just love something to moan about. The side he put out last night tells you everything you need to know, that was a strong side full of experienced players (Foyth & KWP aside) - nothing to see here, move along

I think you've probably just nailed it there tbh.

If we over play our first XI, and pick up injuries, who knows what will happen. We have a great starting XI when fit, burn them out and it could cost us.

Not one team last night played their best XI, and I doubt they will tonight

Building the club so it's able to challenge for the league and in Europe means we are good enough where the FA/League Cup becomes an after-thought.

We all will delight in winning them but they're not top of the list whereas before a League Cup was the defining moment in our season.

We need a trophy to get the monkey off our back but from that moment we have bigger fish to fry.

Think Poch must have known about tonight's league cup draw in advance... West Ham at home on 24 October.

To give you an idea how that fits in...

Tuesday 17th October
UEFA Champions League
Real Madrid19:45 Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday 22nd October
Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur16:00 Liverpool

Tuesday 24th October

Carabao Cup
Tottenham Hotspur19:45 West Ham United

Saturday 28th October

Premier League
Manchester United12:30 Tottenham Hotspur

Wednesday 1st November
UEFA Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur19:45 Real Madrid

I think we can expect a weakened team selection from Poch in the cup game against West Ham - and to be honest, I don't think we can blame him...

What the actual fuck? The league cup game is two days after a premier league game? That's bloody ridiculous. I thought it was normally longer, but maybe that's normal and I've not been paying attention.

West Ham will rotate too if it's 2 days after league game.

Keeping fingers crossed Wanyama, Rose and Lamela will be fit by then, if so it could mean:

Liverpool & Utd games (Son starts one game, Dele the other):

Lloris
Aurier Toby Sanchez Jan Davies
Dier Dembele
Eriksen Dele/Son
Kane

West ham:

Vorm
Trippier Foyth Sanchez Rose
Wanyama Winks
Dele Lamela Son
Llorente

That teams beats West Ham in my opinion.

Much more important to secure CL football than to win domestic cups, I don't understand why it's such a hard concept to grasp. It's not just the money, it's to attract new players and to keep the ones we've got too. Players would choose playing in the CL over domestic cup win all day long.
