The Premier League’s six richest clubs are facing stubborn resistance against their efforts to seek a greater share of income from the next multibillion‑pound round of TV deals.

In a plan believed by the 14 others to be supported by Manchester United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, the Premier League is proposing to end the system by which money from international TV rights sales is shared equally by all 20.

Richard Scudamore, the Premier League’s chairman, is understood to have presented a proposal to a meeting of the other 14 clubs held at the Pullman hotel in London on Wednesday, for 35% of the next international TV money to be distributed according to “merit” – in other words, where clubs finish in the league.

The distribution of TV money last season showed that the champions Chelsea received £151m in total while bottom-placed Sunderland were paid £93m, but the booming international income was shared equally, the 20 receiving £39m apiece. The so-called “big six” clubs argue that as the global revenue rises, as it is expected to again when the 2019-22 deals start to be negotiated later this year, they should receive a larger share because they are the ones which international viewers tune in to watch.

The other 14 clubs have been resisting these moves, in an effort to hold on to their equal share of the money. They are arguing that the sharing arrangement helps them to sign high-quality players and keep the league, as Scudamore describes it, “competitive and compelling” and therefore attractive on TV. Three of the smaller clubs are said to have been inclined at the meeting to agree the new 35% merit payment arrangement, but the agreement of 14 is needed to effect such a substantial change, and 11 remain firmly opposed.

A meeting of all clubs has been called for next Wednesday in London to finalise what the sharing arrangements will be.

It really should stay as it is. Split the money somewhat equally. Otherwise the gap in quality between top and bottom will increase. Really dont want to end up like la liga

They should split it equally in my opinion. The top clubs have got enough money already, but the extra revenue this brings to the smaller clubs can make a big difference.

really disappointed to hear we were in on this effort....short sighted and suggests we have learned little from the years when we were outside the Sky big 4.

One of the main charms with the EPL is that any of the "big" team can be beaten by bottom league clubs (to be fair it can happen in La Liga as well - but it happens less there than in the EPL). As stated above, the mega rich clubs (Spurs are "merely rich") have more than enough - just look at what they spent in transfers this summer and yet their managers complained that they did not spend enough - and if they get even more, so they can bend the FFP rules even more, will widen the gap even (much) more and may end up making the EPL less interesting, and thus less lucrative in the long run.
It wasn't long ago Spurs fans felt unfairly done by due to the excess money the then top-4 clubs acquired from the CL...

Why wouldn't we be in favour of this when we stand to profit more money which can only be a good thing for is, it makes perfect sense and I'm not surprised that we are backing it?

Having said that as a football fan and for the sake of fairness morals I'd like to keep the current system where there's an even split of cash, it makes for better viewing for the neutral and makes the league less predictable.

It already is shared unequally given Sky's need to show every single Liverpool game and only the absolute minimum number of Burnley, Swansea etc games.

I'm surprised Liverpool are up for this, if Southampton end up getting less money how are they going to buy the players Liverpool will be trying to sign the following summer?

Huge advantage of PL is in your second point: "the current system where there's an even split of cash, it makes for better viewing for the neutral and makes the league less predictable"

Here in the US I don't know anyone who watches La Liga apart from matches between the big 2.5 unless they are a solid RM or Barca fan....loads of people watching "casually" games in the Prem involving "lesser" teams

I get it from a UK side of things as Sky/BT pick and choose the fixtures that are aired on TV, and it usually favours the so-called Big 6.
However, from an International perspective that makes no sense, as a lot of countries broadcast every PL game live so it's only right that the international income is split evenly.

It's not that surprising. We were also part of a select grouo of teams who wanted to break away from the English league and get more revenue

It should be shared equally. We will get more revenue no matter what than the team's fightiing relegation

The reason that the pl is so rich is because there is competition. Any team can beat any other on a given day.
Do not change it. If anything needs to be changed it is cl. Cl gave birth to the mega clubs and has destroyed smaller leagues.

I don’t think the PL needs more TV money at all tbh. None of them. I can’t believe there’s yet more coming ... If there’s more money to be had it should be paid down to grassroots

Spurs voting for this...

"These new movements, of course, grew out of the old ones and tended to keep their names and pay lip-service to their ideology. But the purpose of all of them was to arrest progress and freeze history at a chosen moment. The familiar pendulum swing was to happen once more, and then stop. As usual, the High were to be turned out by the Middle, who would then become the High; but this time, by conscious strategy, the High would be able to maintain their position permanently."

Disastrous idea, and clearly the thin end of a wedge. No, no, no. Hopefully the other 14 clubs can face it down.

It will take a 2/3 majority vote. The problem is that the big teams might threaten to break off and form a european league with the likes of barca etc...

Not great either way.

I agree. The reason the premier league is as good as it is is because of the equal tv deal. That changes and it will get a bit shit.

If it gets split like that then the other 14 clubs should say they'd only agree if it came with a wage cap for the top 6 teams.

I remember hearing something about bt not going in for next deal so sky may not have to fork out as much. Is this the top 6 a holes nipping up that they may have players on big long term contracts and looking for a way of getting around what may be on the horizon?
Whatever its pure greed, wrong, and frankly disgusting.
