you have to remember that until his breakthrough for us he was not a midfielder and was learning on the job.

Then played much of last season at CB, and didn't look as good/confident, and this carried over when moving back into CM.

I feel he is re-learning the position, and has improved steadily with each game in there.

As someone said above, tough choice for Poch when Vic is back fit (luckily we can now allow him to get fully fit and take no risks due to Dier's re-emergence as a viable CM option)

He played as a midfielder for Sporting.

Yeah well Lloris could play CM in Portugal. :p

He picked up some bad habits last season, mainly dwelling on the ball and moving slowly towards situations unaware of pressure coming, but after being caught quite a few times for England and us he appears to have knocked this trait on the head (perhaps he just thought to play like Dembele all you had to do was look calm, not realising the body movement and awareness were quite important parts to it ;) )

One of my favourite players. Highly undervalued in this team.

I see that fraud of a blogster.. H.H has him off to City for £60 million next season.

I think his problem in midfield comes when he's asked to be more of a midfielder than a defensive one sitting near the centre backs or filling in helping out fullbacks. He's better played deeper.

When he's asked to move slightly further forward and make riskier passes he struggles and sometimes gives the ball away. That's when he gets the criticism but I don't think that's really his fault as he's a predominately defensive players.

I don't doubt Dier's ability and desire, but when Wanyma is fit and good to go, Pocjh will bring him back into the side. On the positive we have two really good DM's who Poch can rotate if needed, and we shouldn't skip a beat.

It also helped that Huddersfield decided to play a high line, which created plenty of space and passing options for our midfield players.

Dier's a cracking player though and with Winks we've got a pretty decent CM unit there.

Dier played well against Huddersfield. As @BringBack_leGin says, him and Winks dovetailed nicely, complementary set of skills.

Cue a load of ass beans trying to make out that Dier's been great all season, which he hasn't. Nuance is lost on so many it seems.

Hardly the same thing - a bit of game time there right at the start of his career in a forgiving league

No-one disputes that mate...I'm disputing that he had to learn to play in midfield when he came to Spurs where he in fact learned to play in midfield for Sporting.

Dier is quality, vastly under rated by a few which leaves me scratching this handsome head of mine at times

I actually don't agree with this. Said numerous times over the last week to a number of people that Dier was quietly having a good season, and that's now led up to a great performance yesterday.

Cool. I disagree, think he's looked uncomfortable and he looked back to his best with Winks

I agree that Dier and Winks show real promise as a midfield duo. Wanyama and Dembele were brilliant last season, and a solid away win without them is no small thing.

Will be interesting to see who is the better option out of Dier and Wanyama when latter is fit.

It's a tough one for me as much as I love Dier and his spirit / bro-mance with Dele / he seems like he is really good for team spirit, Wanyama still feels the better player for me in midfield.

And now Sanchez is settled in the back three it will be interesting...

I actually think it's about combinations. In a central two I think it's works to have one who is drawn to the ball, another who focuses on the centre as much as possible. Dembele and Dier both like to stay quite central, Wanyama and Winks both like to move everywhere. I think two hunter gatherer types leaves space behind and over commuting, two 'sitters' invites pressure.

Most of our best midfield combinations have followed this pattern: Jenas/ Carrick, Modric/ Huddlestone, Dembele/ Wanyama. The Dembele/ Dier combo even followed this, because back in 15/16 Dembele was far more mobile than he appears to be now and was able to cover much more pitch.

Keane/ Scholes, Mascherano/ Alonso, Essien/ Makalele, Pogba/ Matic.

Ergo, Winks clicks well with Dier, he could potentially click with Dembele v weaker opposition, if he plays with Wanyama one of them has to be more positionally resolute I think.
