They were spending the Lukaku and Barkley cash, that they expected to be incoming before the window closed. nothing more than what Liverpool or ourselves did when Bale and Suarez were sold. In the same way I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of their Summer incomings didn't eventually work out for them given time. I don't think it will be Ronnie that see's the benefit from that though personally. This is the third occasion now in recent times we have seen this exact same strategy backfire. Sell your best players and replace with a number of inferior ones, does not equate to ambition, it basically has the opposite effect and will probably cost the manager his job.
I totally agree, but sometimes people get tunnel vision on money spent and never even ponder the how/why.

In fact a lot of people are even crediting this new rich owner. Who actually isn't all that rich and in the end I wouldn't be surprised if Everton's transfer books balanced out to about the level of their contemporaries.

In fairness to Everton I think the pundits have been harsh on them for the money spent. Liverpool and ourselves have already shown the sell a star player and use the money to bring in several good players does not work. So them claiming that with that money spent they should be challenging top 4 is bollocks. Especially when some of that top 4 spend near double what they just did through multiple seasons. I also thought Mourinhos earlier dig at them was a classic Mourinho dig where it annoys the opposition but also shows a complete lack of self-awareness and is incredibly hypocritical. He claimed with that spend Everton should be challenging top 4. Correct me if I'm wrong but did Mourinho not just spend similar money to finish in 6th place last year?

Thought I'd share this - a short convo I had via e-mail with an Evertonian colleague (season ticket holder at Goodison) from yesterday:

Me: I’m surprised by how badly you’re doing as I rated Koeman highly, but watching you against us and yesterday I can’t work out how he wants you to play. It’s very reminiscent of Spurs after Bale left but we still managed to pick up points and only really came unstuck against the top teams (who dismantled us completely!).

I did chuckle though at Sigurdsson being shifted out to the left like he was at Spurs. He left us to play in the middle and now finds himself back at square one. He’s destined to only ever be good for Swansea, but having ditched them twice their fans probably hate him!

Evertonian Billy: You hold a similar view to most blues Tom. Don’t know why we’ve bought Sigurdsson, but I feel a bit sorry for him tbh, we’re too small as a team for his set pieces to be of any use and he seems to be finding it difficult to fit in as he’s the same type of player as Schneiderlin (and by the looks of it Klaasen), so they’re often getting in each other’s way – comical at times. I’m willing to give him time though. Biggest concern I have is our tactics and style – its crap. I was so bored yesterday, was reminiscent of the Smith & Moyes days - but then those two barely spent £1.50 let alone £150 million. Was impressed with yourselves again, it certainly is a case of when the Spurs go marching in at the moment!

Would it be worth a punt on Ancelotti being a manager in one of the 2 Liverpool clubs by Christmas? :)

Agree completely. Not least because you invariably end up paying well over the odds for the inferior plays because people know you've got money and are desperate. People were talking over the summer about how much "ambition" Everton were showing, but they failed to understand that the amount of money you spend doesn't equal ambition, it's the quality of the players you bring in.

I think Koeman must've been reading an Arsene Wenger guide to management from about 10 years ago. "Step 1: Go forth and sign as many no.10s as possible and though shalt bamboozle teams with thine creativity*

*unless they're either a decent side or a poor side who are well organized, in which case you'll be destined to spend years just passing the ball around sideways with no plan B"

What do u guys think of Calvert-Lewin?

Personally think he has got potential. Great at winning balls in the air. Good movement.

But I feel Everton excepts him to be Lukaku, and he just isn't. Would be interested to see him upfront with lookman thou.

Definitely a talent, but he's being asked to do too much too soon because they fucked up their summer transfers.

I know he's "already" 20, but not everyone can be Rashford. There are far more slow burners.

Koeman's days must be numbered. He's lost the fans going by the comments in this article, which is the beginning of the end. I would suspect if he's lost a large part of the fanbase then he's already lost the belief of some of the players.

The thing with Everton is is that their strategy of buying players over the summer was all wrong as we said on sc at the time.

I maintain, as I did then, that signing Rooney was the biggest mistake. This shortly followed by spending £45 million on sigurdsson. They bought an over the hill player that would expect to play every game and be disruptive when he didn't. They also wasted a lot of money on a player they didn't need. They could have spent all that cash on a new striker or got someone like Tammy Abraham in on loan. Don't tell me there wasn't a really good striker out there for £45 million this summer.

Of course there was, but would a £45mil striker have moved to Everton though? It's very much a catch 22 for the second tier Premier league sides. They have the money to buy top class players but the top class players want to play for top class teams already in the CL. You then have 3 choices. You either end up taking chances on unknown talents who may not make the step up to the PL, massively overpay for players who are on the wrong side of their peak, or try Prem proven players who have done well but will likely never make the step up to the level they are aiming to get to. Fact is though you are right in the fact they needed to buy a striker(any decent striker would have been better than no one) as a first priority, which they failed to do, and it's definitely costing them now.

If we are still interested in Barkley, then we surely hope Koeman keeps his job for a while yet. A new manager might be able to persuade him to stay.
