Congrats to Winks. Granted it is maybe premature as he has played few games, but he has shown more than any other English CM in last year so its not outrageous. Really proud of him.

I read over and over again, people say you shouldn't expect more than one person to come through an academy and any more than that is fortune or luck and we should be grateful. But that as has been said is what things were like almost decade ago. Things have drastically changed, and only expecting one player to be good enough every 5 years, is ridiculous as we have an embarrassment of riches. Look at our academies record over a 5 year period

89/90 - Livermore, Rose
90/91 - Mason, Caulker, Townsend, Smith
91/92 - Carroll
92/93 - Kane, Pritchard, Fredericks
93/94 -

94/95 - Bentaleb - stand alone, group as Bentaleb was the only graduate and splits the 2 generations nicely. Proven PL, Wolrd Cup expereince and now Bundesliga player

95/96 - Veljkovic, Winks
96/97
97/98
98/99
99/00

That first half of the decade has produced 8 PL players, 6 players who made England debuts and arguably 2 World Class in their respective positions. Pritchard is the only real anomaly there for me in terms of pure ability, who didn't get a chance and has now suffered from injuries, it is still look good in the Championship.

I think everyone would agree that when comparing teams or age groups at the same age, the 2nd lot are better than the first lot. The first group didn't win an international tournament, but the 2nd lot have 1 Euro u17 winner, 2 Euro u17 runners up, 3 u20 World Cup winners, 1 Euro u19 winner, and some more I'm sure. The first group had few England internationals, whereas recently we have had so many more internationals at a time England has started to dominate youth international football. That is the level of talent we have.

if we can get those players from the first lot, there is no reason why we can't from the 2nd lot, and there should be more Kanes and Roses in there if we want to uncover them. No excuses, we've done it before we can do it again, the odds are in our favour with the larger talent pool too choose from.

Poch has basically had complete reign over the 95/96 onwards and how he wants to bring them through. One (Milos) left as he didn't believe he will get chances, and has now become a Bundesliga regular and unless wikipedia is wrong (likely) he has unsurprisingly earned himself he first international call up, which is a great look for the academy. And in the same age group and under a different development plan, Winks has now earned his first international call-up, which is brilliant and apparently Georgiou has as well for Cyprus, which is great.

I look forward to this next, even more talented group producing more players, and it goes to show that this isn't fortune. It isn't chance that these players are good enough for PL football, it is very clever planning and coaching. We shouldn't just be happy and expect one to come through, over the next 5 years we should be doing as well as the last generation. If we do that our club will only be stronger

Re Onomah, I think it would have been better for him to play for a smaller championship team with less expectation that actually needed a cm. As others have said Villa are stacked with midfielders and are not the best footballing team in that division. Hopefully he can break back into the starting line-up otherwise may as well recall him and send him back out to a club that will start him. Hes at the age where he needs to be playing more often than not.
