Anyone can explain the "worst 2nd place team" thingie???

Kinda horrible way to miss out on the competition.

I thot there use to be a playoff or something.
Basically...

All 9 of the 2nd place teams go in to the play-offs apart from the one with the lowest points total after you remove the games played against the lowest finishing teams in each group.

For example, in England's group if Scotland finish second they'll have their points removed against Malta (I think), and then get into the play off as long as they're not 9th place.

That's how I understand it...

That's the way it used to be when you had a few groups with six teams and a few with five, the 2nd placed sides in groups with six had their result against the bottom side removed, but now that all of the groups have six teams don't they just round up the points totals as is?

The results against the bottom teams are still removed. No idea why, everything gets very complicated.

CONMEBOL will come to a nailbiting conclusion next week. 5 teams vying for 2 direct qualification spots (Brazil and Uruguay already qualified). Argentina in massive trouble and have to win in the high altitude of Ecuador or they're out. Two really good footballing nations like Chile and Colombia are also in danger. Paraguay and Peru were the big underdogs, but finishing at home is a tremendous opportunity. These are the final fixtures

Brazil v Chile
Ecuador v Argentina
Uruguay v Bolivia
Paraguay v Venezuela
Peru v Colombia

Only Uruguay-Bolivia is a dead rubber as the former is already qualified and Bolivia have nothing to play for.
Can't wait to see how it pans out :coffee:

They have a play-off round. Just someone has to miss out on the play-offs for the system to work. :p

Don't know that I'm rooting for us to go down in flames but I agree with the Arena, Gulati, MLS portion(to an extent, I still think Arena is garbage and a big part of the problem). I just can't see the US not qualifying even with a dinosaur like Arena and his shitty ass roster...
Don’t get me wrong, I think Arena is hot trash. He reeks. He’d never have been rehired if it wasn’t for Gulati and his MLS buddies though. I’d like to be able to see us get to a point where we can be competitive in a World Cup. That’s never going to happen with them in charge. I think it’s possible we don’t qualify. Panama can definitely get a result tonight. I can also see Mexico laying down against Honduras and doing the opposite of what we did for them in the last round of qualifying. It probably won’t happen but it’s not impossible.

anyone see ospina's performance against paraguay? ospina makes 2 blunders in the final 6 minutes. colombia would have qualified with a win.

That Colombian announcer's decreasing enthusiasm as the goals went in is a thing of beauty. Wasn't really difficult to determine his rooting interest.

And screwing up the Colombian team's chances is not good for you health history has shown.

They ought to include results against the sixth-placed teams, but when they drew the European groups, Gibraltar and Kosovo were not members of FIFA, so the European section had seven groups of six, and the last two with five teams each. The addition of those two FAs to FIFA meant that they had to be added to the last two European groups at fairly short notice, but FIFA kept the rule about ignoring results against the last team in each group, even though the groups all have the same number of teams.
As for the play-offs, the lowest of the 2nd-placed teams misses the cut for that round. In the past, certain nations with strong football pedigrees and/or with broadcasters who put a lot of money into UEFA/FIFA have been seeded to keep them apart. I don't know if FIFA will do that again, but I hope they don't. It should be a completely open draw. If some high profile team doesn't get enough points from 10 games to qualify automatically, that's their own fault, nobody else's, so they shouldn't expect any favours or sympathy. They certainly won't get my sympathy.

No open draw, it will be seeded. Which sucks.

There's no chance of Argentina missing the tournament next year, though. if they finish 5th in the CONMEBOL section, they'll have a two-legged play-off against NZ.

But if they don't beat Ecuador they'll likely be sixth and lose out.

If they draw they need Peru to lose at home to Colombia. If they lose they're out.

I have to admit that I haven't seen the CONMEBOL table for a few weeks, and I didn't realise that Argentina was in danger of finishing 6th. That would be a real bummer if they even missed the cut for the play-off with NZ.

Three draws and a loss in their last four. 16 goals in 17 qualifiers. Something's gone very wrong there.

Messi, Dybala, Aguero, Higuain (not even in the squad), Di Maria, Icardi. That talent shouldn't get those results.

I don't know what their defence is like (probably mediocre to poor), but with players like those, they should be scoring enough goals to get the necessary points.
