Clyne is a really good right-back (although long-term injured at the moment).

Robertson seems to me a decent left back who I wanted at Spurs this summer but for some bizarre reason Klopp bought him and isn’t playing him? He’s been playing Moreno instead quite a lot instead randomly...

Their centre backs aren’t that hot with Matip probably being the best of them so really needs to invest there.

Their goalkeeper situation is bizarre as Mignolet clearly isn’t good enough for a top four chasing team and Karius hasn’t worked out for them thus far although I think he was decent in Germany.

Midfield-wise Henderson is just bang average for me, the rest attacking-wise are actually quite decent likes of Mane, Salah, Coutinho, Llana (who is unfortunately injured and a miss), Firminio and the have the promising Solanke and Ings if he can’t get and stay fit. No comment on Sturbridge lol.

I think VVD is decent, he does get caught out, but a really good centre back.
That's it though, he has all the natural attributes but gets caught out once virtually every match because he doesn't concentrate fully for 90 minutes at a time. Perfect for Liverpool, then.

Southampton have become a very defensive team. The team is set up not to concede, he will look a far better player sitting at the back of all that protection than he will gung ho Liverpool.

Agree with this but most defenders will look worse when they don't have protection. If Liverpool had someone like Kante instead of Henderson they would be a much better side.

I do wonder if Klopp was planning to put VVD in as CB and push Matip up as the DM, but that sounds far too defensive for Klopp. He probably would've played VVD as another attacking midfielder.

VVD imo is very similar to Gary Cahill when he was at Bolton, clearly better than a mid table/ mediocre prem side, but doesnt quite have the natural top six talent. That's not meant to be a massive negative because Cahill has had begrudgly a very good career at Chelsea, while scoring some big goals and getting some big blocks in. But that might not be good enough at Liverpool.

Cahill also played next to Terry, VVD won't have that a Pool

Yeah thats why I said that might not be good enough for/at liverpool. Chelsea's midfield and style of play provides a lot of cover and protection. But it still is stunning that Cahill has won 5 major trophies at Chelsea, which when considering our squad over the past three years stings.

VVD is quick and strong in the air, considering Liverpool play a high line and are shit in the air you can see how he would make a difference.

Fair enough, for some reason I thought it was closer to the half way line. However, he still doesn't look that quick there

Former Norway-legend Kjetil Rekdal (scored the winner in the WC98 game against Brazil and a screamer of a goal at old Wembley) teasing the Liverpool-supporters with a nice comment on Norwegian television when Emre Can scored for Germany.
"He plays for Liverpool, so it's nice that he too can experience some success"
Following up with:
"It's been a disappointing start of the season for Liverpool, who every season talks about "this is our year". For then in October, November starts talking about next season."

Norwegian Liverpool supporters went totally nuts on Twitter after that comment. LoL. Just as expected from that lot. :D

Rekdal is by the way a Leeds-supporter.

Everyone has already mentioned Kane mugging him off for speed, but hasn't Kane and Alli beaten him in the air for goals once each?

Is it even certain Liverpool would be able to sign VVD? Doesn't sound like Southampton want to sell him and especially to that lot. I know players usually get their way but it looks like Southampton are going to hold firm. I wonder if they'll just force him out to another team instead if he's not going to play for them.

What actually happened to the complaint about the way they approached VVD? The fact they pulled out and apologised was in effect an admission of guilt, do they not risk sanctions by going in for him again?

Soton fans actually point to his ability to win headers as one of his weaknesses. But I dunno, when I see him play I tend to notice loads of what's called "childrens deseases" in my native tongue. Don't know if you have a better term for it, but generally quite a few flaws that should have been plucked off him if he was as good as his hype suggests.

As for Liverpool, their flaws are systemic. They tend to create a lot, and actually doesn't concede too many shots. Their trouble is that when the do concede shots, they are often very big chances (typically from 10 yards and in), and it's been a consistent trend all through Klopps time there. Some times they's swarm the opposition and win with a few goals, but if they don't kill games, they'll always be vulnurable.

There was a good article in another thread or earlier in this one about how defenders who are considered good play in a Klopp team and are exposed. I think when Klopp had Subotic, Hummels & Gundogan it flattered his style of play, they were that good. Or maybe the majority of his opponents weren't as good as the majority of EPL teams? But whatever the reason, good defenders have turned average in the new gegenpressing klippityKloppity Liverpool

I can't remember exactly but either Southampton didn't go ahead and "press charges" or the FA decided that the matter was over anyway so didn't follow up.

Either way, it's daft that they haven't been punished. Just because you admit you did something doesn't mean you should get off scot free.
