I can't deny that just below the surface of my cautious optimism is the sincere hope that we don't get thrashed.

I just don’t want us to freeze. We could play well and still get beaten, such is the talent of Real, but I just want us to represent.

Winks will play imo - he was ultra defensive against Bournemouth as that is how he needs to play on Tuesday.
Likewise Vertonghen will play LB - there has to be a reason he was played there on Saturday when there were other options.

We need 3 CBs in defence but whether Dier plays LCB, centre half or RCB is anyone's guess.
But if Dier is in defence, Dembele simply must play midfield. Get slapping those fentanyl patches on him.
I guess Aurier plays as he is fresh.

I can't say II like the look of this side, and RM will be looking for a comfortable win.
If they don't get it, they'll be looking to kick Kane right up in the air.

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Victor Wanyama and Erik Lamela rejected the chance to join the Tottenham squad for their Champions League clash against Real Madrid tomorrow night (Tuesday).

Midfield anchorman Wanyama and winger Lamela are closing in on first-team returns after lengthy spells on the sidelines.

Manager Pochettino admitted that neither of the pair were fit for selection against the Champions League holders but were invited to fly out to Spain in support of the team.

They turned down the opportunity but the suspended Dele Alli did not and is part of the travelling party even though he is not fit to play for the third of Spurs’ six Champions League group matches.

“Dele wanted to come and stay with the team,” Pochettino told the official Spurs Twitter account on the flight to Spain this afternoon. “We have some injured players like Lamela still recovering and Wanyama at the training ground. They prefer to stay there.

“We invite them to come and stay with the group because I think it is an important game and to have the possibility to stay all together.”

Don't know too much about Wanyama and not bothered tbh, but I'd like to think for Lamela it's a mix of a bit angry (at himself) for being out so long that he's missed the first round of CL roster and that what's the meaning of being in Madrid when you can't play, a la Lukaku rejected the champion metal/ring while he's with Chelsea because he didn't feel he deserved one.

At least I hope that's the case.

Ideally I'd like to have Jan at LB, but do fear Sanchez being too exposed when playing 4 in the back, esp. for a big game like this. I'll take Tripp on the left instead.

Shame we lost Davies for this game.

We need a point out of the next 2 fixtures, then possibly another point in Germany to be safe. First XI and try to shock the world.

Tactical surprise? Hmmm... 4-4-2? Midfield diamond in front of a back four, with Harry playing a number 10 role next to Llorente?

I guess it comes down to the interpretation of a CL league debut... for us, or just the CL league in general?

Might it be...

Lloris

Tripps
Toby
Jan
Aurier

Dier
Dembele
Winks
Eriksen

Harry

Llorente

Or, if it’s a proper debut, perhaps it’s reference to KWP?

But not sure what that means from a tactical standpoint.

Bennetts at LWB anyone? Probably too young and hasn't trained with the first team yet so I'm guessing either amos or kwp are in the mix. Amos at LWB would be suicide so it has to be kwp

I'm sure you all remember Marcelo's double fist-pump celebration when Crouch got a second yellow for a challenge on him.

Sticks out in my head as one of the most unsporting things I've seen against Spurs in a match.

Fingers crossed the boys can bring us some revenge and top this group. (And smash Marcelo)

Marca's predicted Tottenham team includes Davinson Sanchez in midfield. #THFC

Don't rule it out. Remember when everyone mocked Marca's Liverpool starting XI for the Bernabeu. Turned out they'd watched training closely.

Rodgers had always planned to field a weakened team, and trained like that the day before at Bernabeu. Oh that was a fun day.

So, this is the tactics change afterall, that was indicated by @Hercules

Sanchez in midfield is a risk IMO. His ball playing ability isnt the greatest.

Don't buy it, they have Vertonghen playing RCB and Toby playing LCB.

Despite having Wanyama out, who I feel would have been key in this game, it's the lack of balance that I'm most worried about. I've never been a fan of trippier on the left, or Son ala Chelsea last season.

Vertonghen would be my choice with Sanchez, Toby, Dier in a 3 and Aurier on the right.

Dembele and winks (although I think he'll go Sissoko) and the rest picks itself.

Just hoping we don't start as badly as we did the last time we played away at the reigning European champions...
