3 years ago, if you'd told me we'd be discussing a possible return of Bale (albeit not going to happen) and we'd all be going "nah, it's not worth it", I'd have called you mad

It's Don Balon. The Spanish Daily Star. Ignore it.
I'm convinced this type of 'media' outlet is just a puppet controlled by one of the bigger media outlets, they make up spurious bullshit, then the bigger outlets get to report it like it's actual news.

Reality is, for Bale money we could sign 2x absolute elite U23 talents like Davinson.

Say Gelson Martins and Sessegnon, for examples.

Watched Gelson Martins last night in CL; he was pretty rubbish.

Not surprised, I get to watch naff all football nowadays, Spurs aside, but you get the drift that two €40-50 U23s would be better for the team.

Haven't most of his injury issues of recent times been muscular? Something our fitness/performance team seem very good at preventing. Touch wood I can't think of the last time we had a player out with a hamstring/calf muscle etc related injury just the unpreventable knocks and knee twists etc.
Sadly I don't think it'll happen due to wages but if there is any chance (first option etc) it would be fantastic, he's a world class match winner & I think the injury issues could be less of an issue here or at least no more than any other player. Just a hunch of course.

I still disagree, I mean, sure you get a lot of talent for that money, huge talent even, but Bale has the intangibles, if he's still the same player that left us he's got the ability to single handedly win us the tough games in which we've been banging our heads against the wall, I don't think a Gelson Martins or a Ryan Sessegnon would give us that, at least not in the next couple of years.

if there was any sort of rational reason to do the deal, it would be silly not to. Winning trophies and cups with Bale would mean so much. Prodigal son returns to lead the way to glory and all that nice blubbery sentimental crap. However there's is no such possibility, so lets go for Sessegnon anyways.

See, that response was so smart that you just had to post it, and couldn't make your self think through its validity before posting. There is only a partial correlation between book awards and income potential. And football biographies are written exclusively to make money, not to win prizes. A former footballer you can barely remember as a player (a shame really, as he is Spurs fan), Dave Kitson, is adding to his retirement funds as we speak, as "The Secret Footballer". Now, it's not exactly something that would ever win the nobel prize in literature, but it doesn't have to be, it's not the point. Knowing this country, if the former director of communication in Downing Street can publish a book about Brexit and Cameron, a book about "the boy who became a man and returned home" with a great, smiling, bearded Bale showing off his man bun on the cover will sell quite a few copies, and not only to his own mum, either.

And it doesn't stop there. Book is only one example. Say your (or Bale's) contract states that the club grants the player the right to undertake other business activities not directly related to or in competition with the services he is rendering to the club under this contract. Now all of the sudden, Bale could launch his own range of nose hair clippers, his own brand of crap Spanish red wine, or his own thong bathing suits for men. All with Bale's heart icon on it. :greedy::greedy::greedy:

No shit Sherlock, the reference to book deals just made me laugh as if he were Obama doing his much awaited memoirs from Madrid.

Either way, that wasn't the point of my post which was the high improbability of his return. Since you seem absolutely certain that he will return, perhaps you could enlighten us all as why that is.

Who is Don Balon? The name sounds like a cheaper copy of Ballon d'or. And the award for the most drunk player of the year goes to..

Top top centre back playing in the old First Division. Harry tried to sign him at Bournemouth but the chairman wouldn't let him.

Not going to happen as we won’t match wages but.... it’s nice to see we’re getting to a level where the media stories being created are about players wanting to join us (big shift in how we’re portrayed which can only build our brand)

We have first refusal if he leaves and I'm sure Bale wouldn't be opposed to coming back at some point. Could we really afford to spend the money it would take to do this deal, without moving on one of our current stars? For me the cost would be too great for what is now a world class player but who is plagued with injuries.

Wouldn't signing a player as recognizable as him increase the amount of revenue we'd bring in for sponsorship though? It could be a perfect time to do it as we're looking at naming rights for the stadium, etc. As for his wages, we're never going to pay him £300K a week, but could we make a deal over his image rights to offset that, and could Madrid be persuaded to keep paying part of his wages as well?

Personally I don't think we should just look at it from a monetary point of view. If we can get 25 games out of him a season (he played 29 for Madrid last season) then that could mean the difference between us finishing third or finishing first. It could be the difference between losing to Chelsea in another semi final, or finally taking home a trophy.

I doubt that we'll sign him, but I don't think it's as far fetched as some might think.

Dorsn’t fit with the way we play. His workrate are not even close to what Poch expect from his players. Also very injury prone.

Of course it’s speculation.

That being said, we are a Bale away from the title and CL contention.

The boy is dynamite.

I’d snap anyone’s arm off to have him in our team, possibly including my mums.

I may let myself think about that for a moment before reality hits me.

Does anyone honestly believe we'd get Bale without someone else going the other way, someone we definitely would not want to see the back of?

Real Madrid only do deals that they come out on top in. Expecting anything else is rather naive IMO.

actually, I don't think this is far fetched - if, and this is a HUGE if... the player himself was desirous of this move. then and only then, could something be worked out. as he'd have to know that the club cannot pay what he made at Real Madrid. However, they could find other ways to make up the difference, whether it's a split of merchandising rights, or something else. But if Bale was excited to be a part of the team and to get the opportunity to run out of the tunnel for the first game in the new stadium, then i'd bet he'd be willing to compromise on pay.
of course, the other hurdle is how much Real would sell for. that's the sticking point that would make the whole thing moot.
