.....and yet won fuck all aerially nor kept control of the ball when desperately needed.

Not a good cameo - again

Absolute nonsense. His first touch when he came on was to receive a throw-in in the box, control it and lay it off for a shot. After that he won plenty in the air and provided a target for lay-offs. Watch the last 30 minutes again without your pre-conceptions.

I know Dier was largely to blame - but who gave Lakaku that amount of room unchallenged to win the initial header? Would that have been Toby?

As I've said in the ratings thread, what about Vertonghen? He's never goal side of Martial at any point. If Lukaku flicks it at a different angle tot he other side of Dier we're probably in as much trouble.

All three centre backs could have done better for the goal, Dier and Vertonghen considerably so. Add all that up and after such an error you cant complain that you lose the game.

Bemoaning Llorente when we should be bemaoning why we don't play to his strengths when he's on the pitch. The guys a dominant force in the air, exploit it!!

Agree, didn't he net something like a dozen goals last season for relegation fodder. The service we give to him is quite shocking to be honest.

And Jan gets away without any blame when he was the one that wasn't goal side of his man who scored... okay then.

Neville called him out on that. Lukaku brushed Alderweireld aside like he was an u15, just as he had done for the header that hit the post a few minutes earlier.

Yes it did have nil all written all over it. The weather was shite, Mourinho sets up to not lose and as was mentioned already a moment of skill or a lapse of concentration would win/lose it. For us it was the latter.

I must say apart from his sublime pass over the top to Dele, Eriksen was very quiet. Sissoko was easily (at least imo) our worst player (embarrassing at times) and I cannot see (thus far) how Aurier is keeping Trippier out of the starting XI. I thought when Llorente came on, so should have Trippier.

Anyhoo, bring on Real Madrid and bring back Harry Kane !

You really can't underestimate how important it is for the psyche of the squad to feel they are in a title race. If the gap with City keeps widening, motivation levels are going to drop hugely in league matches (we saw this with Chelsea two seasons ago when they started poorly and last season with Arsenal). The era of being highly motivated by finishing 4th is over with the finishes of the last two seasons. This squad has shown when they feel there isn't much to play for (Newcastle away two seasons ago), they can switch off.

Win the initial header and job done - its criminal to allow Lakaku so much space to win the header like that, yes granted after that, we needed to tidy up and didn't - But Toby was as much to blame - he challenges Lakaku at least he was yards off him.
Agreed all of them were to blame but it was Jan's man that scored and Dier is the one taking the flak because people have an agenda.

Dear oh dear. Some of the comments are embarrassing. The record against the top 6 is very poor so we can't win the league. Ok. So Liverpool, who have a great record can win the league then?

I am gutted about the result, we played well and gave away a sloppy goal. But bloody hell, we move on. That is what top sides do and I have no doubt that is what we will do.
I wouldn't mind going to Man City or Real and losing...they're probably better than we are. But to lose to a team that is so limited, but has the knack of winning no matter how badly they play, is really, really, galling.

A lump up field from their goal keeper - you should really expect one of you CBs to challenge for the first header? I'm not saying after that both Verts and Dier are also responsible - But Toby is nowhere near Lakaku.

More leaders on the pitch with the right mentality, screaming at each other would have ensured at least a draw. In hindsight, if Dembele had started the game we may have had more control at the beginning and perhaps created a chance or two. For the sake of the shape of the team, I think Llorente (even if he has a mare) should have started. You can see Son just doesn't want to/can't really play there. We won't find out if the Spaniard can play /gel with the team and he won't get any better unless he actually plays! When Llorente was brought on then Trippier should have come on too as he can cross and by then Aurier was fading. Actually I couldn't see that Aurier did that much except have a passing party with Sissoka at the exclusion of everybody else - resulting in not passing forward or early enough. I'm not sure the two of them are really Poch-type players.

Oh well, guess Pep was right! We are he Harry Kane team! Dread to think what the score against Real Madrid will be if we play like that! I’d imagine a 5-0 tonking!

That’s 2 defeats in a row now, time to step up!

And once again that when it comes to fine margins in the big matches we find ourselves on the wrong side.

Architects of our own downfall and indicative of a team that ultimately will always be the bridesmaid.

Well we designed a 3-0 win over Utd last year, took 4 points off Arsenal and ManC and beat champions Chelsea who were on a record run of wins last year.

Hardly always finding ourselves on the wrong side of fine margins.

Thought dier was probably our best player.bar the goal he was good defensively and had the bravery to bring the ball forward.something that i didnt see much from the midfield.toby was unusually shaky.beaten a few times by lukaku in the air and rushed a few passes.
