The bench was the difference today, Martial came on and won the game. We didn't have any game changers to come on.
True - we don't have pace to bring on with 10 to go when the other team is tiring. This is not rocket science - but is actually what Jose M does week in week out - Hence they score more goals in last 10 minutes than any other team. He's labelled "The Special One" because of this "masterful" tactic.
Pile of bollox - but it works. Suck up the opposition, wear them out and then hit them in the final 10minutes with pace.
MoPo needs to work on this tactic and have the players to do so. With that in mind he doesn't give or bring on and develop N'kou as often as he should.
I can't wait to have Lamela back.
bar that - bringing on flat footed Llorente with no one humming around him for the flick ons or nod ons is just a wasted predictable tactic.
In this department MoPo needs to do better.
Look at the really big teams - Man Shitty, Real, etc and who they bring off the bench....frightening.

Eriksen was woeful first half, giving the ball away in key positions at least 7 times that I noticed. He was unusually nervous in possession I thought. The answer would have been to push him further forward or sub him. Alli did ok, but again, no vision, head down on the ball, maybe nerves again, but not aware of where Son was. Later we improved, but Winks was knackered and started getting caught in possession not releasing it early enough and Llorente needed Trippier on the pitch to stand any chance of getting his head on the ball. We deserved a draw, but switching off by Dier cost us. He didn't know Martial was coming in and moved too late to beat him to the ball. Verts was trying to save the day.

A lump up field from their goal keeper - you should really expect one of you CBs to challenge for the first header? I'm not saying after that both Verts and Dier are also responsible - But Toby is nowhere near Lakaku.

I agree you want the header cut out ideally, but even with a challenge its always possible you might get a flick on... To not be in position in case this happens is the worst of the lot for me as it's entirely within your control. You don't just assuming your mate will win the ball, largely the whole point of defending is positioning yourself in case the ball runs through and you're there to deal with it.

Previous seasons yes, but this season we look like we are really relying on him sadly.
I don’t buy that for one match. We slipped on a massive banana against the Ham and there was a knock on and we were afraid to lose so we didn’t try hard enough to win.

Think you will find it was the same under Redknapp.
Oh yeah I agree this has gone on for as long as I can remember we used to be beaten before we got on the pitch, now we get beaten just on it so there has been improvement I guess.

This thread is a shit place to be at the moment. Grown adults acting like children. We have been desperate just to be here for the last 25 years. Yet we arrive and people are crying.

You know What, you lose away at the best sides. In the same way that we didn't lose at home last season. It's just the way that it goes.

It is a very job that our players have a better mentality than some of our fans.

Really poor from some of you.

Winks out best player.

If Alli scores we win.

If we do better basic defending we get a point.

Llorente was anonymous after coming on, although I agreed with the sub at the time.

The league is not over in any sense, but it is a disappointing result.

If players like Alli want to win things...score that goal...simple.

Switched off for 2 mins & one long ball caught us out & Verts should have been better placed to deal with the 2nd ball!

Eriksen played one decent ball in the whole of the came & Dembele no where near ready for games like this.

I think the main mistake was taking Son off for Llorente. Lots of people are criticising Llorente (and have been all season), but it would work better with someone playing off him (i.e. Son, or Kane against Madrid), and also playing to his strengths (i.e. use him to link play, then move the ball quickly to full backs to cross for him, which we didn't do).

Criticising a player of his pedigree is just ignorance.

Four home wins, no goals conceded, i'd say that puts them head and shoulders better than us. Sometimes pride has to take a back seat and some recognition of the better all around side.

We are a team who depend on one player, and today proved that point beyond any shadow of a doubt.

That's just not true and was proven last year when Kane spent his second spell out injured.

Knee-jerk based on 2 games.

Fans have higher expectations and are rightly concerned that this team may get broken up if we're not challenging for trophies.

You see, I don't understand this. Why?

When Son went off the game was just opening up and then huge gaps were left in midfield and in behind them but we had Llorente on who is a slow couch.

Made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

And the thing he's in the team for, getting on the end of chances, he messed up. No conviction.

Frustrating game to lose but in the end we got what we deserved.

Minor point, but thought he actually got clipped by Smalling when he was going for it, probably enough to put him off.

Clever run by Martial. When you run across defenders like that and gamble it's very hard to deal with. It's like the goal we conceded to Burnley, if you freeze it, it looks like we should have the situation covered. You can criticise all three CB's, but they are all marginal mistakes. TA should be whacking Lukaku IMO and not letting him get a free header but maybe he thinks because they are going toward the ball and Lukaku is nearer, he's going to get it so backs off hoping to just pick up the knock down, Martial runs across JV but behind Dier, watching it in real time I just wanted Dier to attack the ball, he seems to let it bounce and once he does he's taken himself out, and now JV is playing catch up, and even then if Martial doesn't bobble the ball into the ground first,JV blocks it.

Spot on most fans keep on forgetting we never played in the CL forget that I can't remember the last time we played in Europe, I was happy finishing in the top 10.
