What did Dier do wrong? Was far better than Victor today.
slow and sloppy on the ball, didnt attack set pieces well enough, but he was very unfortunate that he didnt score from Jan's cross just before HT. It also just feels like he's having a hard time concentrating on the pitch at the moment. it'll be interesting to see how poch handles him over the cource of the season. I hope his development isnt stalling.

He was poor in this match but we know he's a much better player when fully fit.
He's just been back from injury. Hope he will be back to full fitness for the burnley game.

He'll be lucky to be considered for the Burnley game with such a stinker yesterday. Dier should be holding and we don't need him and Wanyama for Burnley. Need for creative and attacking minded pair for this game

I would say there is a need for more creativity in general, not just for Burnley. Dier and Wanyama should never be together in the midfield, no matter who the opponents are.

With the three at the back ( or a slightly different version that some suggested we lined up with yesterday) there are simply too many defenders or defensive minded players on the pitch. It's different with Walker and Rose because even though they can be erratic with their final balls their pace and athleticism mean we can stretch teams. Even Dembele who was the best player on the pitch yesterday doesn't have the creativity in the opponents half of the pitch. It's just left down to Dele, Eriksen and Kane and with our ponderous play in the midfield and Trippier and Davies unable to get behind teams if opponents just shut down Eriksen our only route to goal is creating something out of nothing.

Regarding Wanyama specifically, he is just clearly off the pace and needs to ease himself into the season. Unfortunately, his natural replacement Dier has not been playing well for quite a while. Since the Euro's in fact.

Lloris didn't have a good game yesterday too but would you drop him for the burnley game?

Wanyama is just back from injury and clearly isn't fully fit. We've seen before that it should be either him or Dier in DM and not both.

Anyway, whoever plays , I feel confident that we will get a better result next week. Hope the new signing(s) get up to speed soon so that we have better options for our upcoming games.

What I'm saying is that against Burnley we don't need two holding midfielders and Dier currently is the most effective in this role with a more attack minded partner.

The Lloris comment is not worth the effort in replying

Conte knew that and targeted Wanyama, also knowing that he doesn't have top quality ball control. They were on him like a rash every time he got the ball and it shook him up a bit Good tactics from Conte, but I was hoping Winks would get on and give us a bit of composure in the middle. Hope HW gets the nod for Burnley either for Dier or VW since we don't need both in there.

Wanyama and Dier have different qualities.
Wanyama is better at breaking down opposition attacks and tends to play the simple pass i.e. Still allowing us to keep possession.
Dier prefers the longer passes but sometimes his tackles can be mistimed.
I prefer Dier when we play the likes of Hazard, Fabregas, united and Arsenal but overall I feel more comfortable with Wanyama in DM.

He doesn't need to, his strength and his ability to hold off players negates that, I wouldn't say he was targeted more than anyone else, it's just that it seemed like he was because he kept giving the ball away.

Wanyama was fantastic last season barring one stinker (I can't remember who that was against now) so let's just put yesterday down as a bad day at the office. He was off the pace and sloppy and as others have said already, Chelsea cleverly targeted him and reaped the rewards.

Let's not change the formula that worked so well for us last season on the back of one match. I agree Winks should've come on yesterday to replace Wanyama, but let's let Vic get match fit and then Poch can start to rotate as the cup matches commence.

Yes wanyama was poor yesterday in fact that is the worst I've seen him in a spurs shirt he was loose in possession, got caught dwelling on the ball a couple of times and the fuck up between him and lloris was shocking.
But once he finds his feet again I'm sure the old Victor will be back.

I'm more than willing to give him a pass, think Dier, Hugo and Poch did him no favours today.

He lost the ball on numerous occasions, either through poor passing or by trying to dribble through two or three Chelsea players, ultimately resulting in losing the ball for the winning goal by trying to take someone on. He's a great destroyer, but he needs to remember when he has the ball to give it simply to his nearest teammate. If Winks had been brought on in his place you could quite reasonably argue we would not have lost the game.

Wanyama need to step up his passing skills. Too often that he passes the ball too short or gives it away to the opponent

He clearly wasn't fit yesterday. Let's not discount the whole of last season when he was one of our best players
Totally agree. If Dier hadn't of been booked I don't think he would have stayed on. The minutes played in that game will do him a lot of good getting up to speed.

For those saying his technique is poor should rewatch him from last year. When he came I had no idea why we signed him. After watching him he is actually very dynamic and a very decent technician. Can see why Poch went with him yesterday but he needed a bit more time to get up to speed.

Well spotted, I agree with you. Newcastle targeted dele last week, which makes no sense. Targeting Wanyama on the other hand, that's actually semi-sensical. In reality, there is not one player or manager who performed at his best yesterday, and going on and on about singular players doesn't describe the reality. They all did blunders yesterday.

From what I saw, their game plan was not to give eriksen (the player that starts our attacks) and Wanyama (the player that stops opponent's attacks) much time on the ball. They did it from the off and they did it well.
