I am empathetic to his position - but at some point you just have to find out if he can sink or swim. If he sinks, then you know he needs to go away and get what ever mental help he needs. Its possible that simply keeping him around, but not addressing the mental health issue is doing him more harm than good. And, if you thrown him out there, and he realizes that he is ready - then you have helped him get past that mental hurdle - sometimes a person needs a friendly nudge to get past a roadblock.

And, if he is not ready - then that training time is better spent with players who will be ready, and called upon to play.

Whilst that may be a way of dealing with the issue, it's not necessarily the best way. Sometimes a little subterfuge can go a long way to convincing someone that they are better than they think. A good team talk is a classic example. It may be that a little subterfuge in Eric's case is all he needs. Pick the right game, the right moment a supposed injury with a player where Eric is the only real option and it's a case of 'Eric, we really need you here, just run around and keep them under pressure. Don't tackle unless you want to', type scenario. His adrenalin will do the rest.

During his first season he played through pain because he was so eager to make an impact. It led to a long injury absence. With that in mind, after a double sided hip surgery and more than a year out, I can't blame him if he has a mental hurdle to climb before he feels comfortable to play.

Good for him that our fanbase is so understanding and doesnt put more pressure on him by telling him to man up and get on with it... ;)

Do Spurs fans in general expect him to be the same player coming back after a year out? I certainly don’t have that expectation of him. I hope he comes back and slowly regains confidence over the course of the season and by this summer is something close to the Lamela we were seeing a year ago.

I think football fans in general are impatient, it's the world in general now, people want things immediately and expect instant results, we live in that kind of society sadly.

I feel the same way you do about him and the situation so I am with you on that but I couldn't speak for what others might expect of him upon his return.

No, he wont be immediately the same player, it will take time. But I think he'll still have that infectious pitbull attitude on the pitch, hunt that ball down and get stuck in

That pit bull mentality is my favorite thing about Lamela. Hopefully he can regain enough confidence to spell Eriksen. That could be the most important thing he brings us over the remainder of the season. Eriksen can’t play every second of every match.

I so hope to see Lamela's name on the subs today.

This sort of thing is what pisses me off. It's the morning of the NLD, we have one of the worlds best, inform strikers and a young team who recently beat the back to back European champions yet your primary concern appears to be Lamela being in the bench. I have to stop coming in this thread but it amazes me when I log on and its always the most recent thread in Spurs Chat.
