Speaking of West Ham, they've cut off the autonomy of their women's team, withheld funding for months, banned them from using the training facilities as well as the gym and make them pay for kits and equipment.

The women's team now train, jog and run in the street.

I recently got the BBC app and you can personalise the news to your preferences.

So I picked Spurs, PL and football. On my second day it showed 2 articles about women's football. The day after another one showed up

If they want to be pedantic they can say mens football and women's football, but to put them in together is just a disgrace, not because of sexism but simple popularity.

Imagine having news article one - Kidderminster harriers centre back announces retirement. 2 - Rotherham sign free transfer Ex Dagenham starlet. 3 - Rooney retires from all football and starts painting.

One of those articles will receive millions of views, the others possibly 50. So if you are a reputable news outlet you put only one of those on your front page.

Trying to imagine what Wayne Rooney's art would look like has given me a good giggle.

Daringly post-feminist from Baroness Brady, that.

Not a fan either and I'm not being sexist/misogynistic before the PC gang attack me. I loaded up the BBC sport page the other day, it said Chelsea lost, I was scratching my head why they were playing until I realised it was the ladies game. There should be a separate section for it in my opinion. I'd say let it grow then add it to the main football, just like they do with Tennis. Next they'll be shoving womens rugby and formula 1 down our throats

Same on the Guardian website for the past year or two, they have women's football articles up on the main page. While I don't have a problem with women's football generally speaking, I do have a problem with it being given equal weighting as the men's game on the websites and newspapers. With the best wish in the world women's club football is an extremely niche market so it's a bit much when you have the latest WSL headlines up there alongside PL and CL stories. I guarantee more people are interested in lower league men's football than they are in the WSL and yet you almost never get League 2 stories on the front page/top of the websites.

The thing is that in professional football there isn't a need for men's football, the simple fact is that there is football and the best players play in it, if it was mixed there would still be only men playing in it and that is a fact of life.
There is women's football to give them the opportunity to play the game so when women players are playing at the top of their profession they are not playing at anything like the top of the football profession and that should be recognised.
I read the other day a professional woman footballer saying she trains and plays as hard as the men and so should be paid the same as the men, now I'm sure most women footballers understand that isn't sensible but the fact that anyone can think it makes sense amuses me.
There are thousands probably millions of footballers who are better than the top women footballers who would be disqualified from earning the same wage because they are men, in the final analysis that isn't fair is it?
I don't have a problem with the media raising the profile of women's football but to equate it directly with the men's game is quite simply wrong.
I do understand that the same could apply to tennis where it is unlikely that the best women players could to beat any of the top five hundred men players and absolutely certain never to beat the top two hundred but to counter this I have to say that I prefer watching the women's game any day of the week.

You cannot be serious?! :p

I know you'd probably make a special exception for them, but either of the Williams sisters in their prime would have been able to compete with the best of the men.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Sexes_(tennis)

1998: Karsten Braasch vs. the Williams sisters
Another event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open[51] between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked outside the world's top 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centered around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".[52][51] The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park,[53] after Braasch had finished a round of golf and two shandies. He first took on Serena and after leading 5–0, beat her 6–1. Venus then walked on court and again Braasch was victorious, this time winning 6–2.[54] Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance". He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".[55] Braasch said the big difference was that men can chase down shots much easier, and that men put spin on the ball that the women can't handle. The Williams sisters adjusted their claim to beating men outside the top 350.[51]

I genuinely wouldn't, I don't believe they could compete with the men at all.

He's totally right. The top females would have a very tight game with most tennis club pros let alone world ranked players. The difference in power and speed between the genders is just too much

Absolutely untrue, as has been shown on many occasions that the difference in physique makes it difficult or impossible for the best women to compete with even average circuit pros.

There are women who can lift more weight than I, women who drive better than I (I don't even have a license), can run 100m faster than my best ever time, can beat me at tennis and do more keepy ups than I've ever managed. I am still a man though and the fact a woman can beat me at any of these doesn't impact on my machismo and genuinely doesn't bother me.

For some reason though it does bother other people and I can only assume it's because they a, aren't comfortable losing to a woman or b, feel that a woman been better at a sport that than them somehow diminishes them?

If you don't like women's football, don't watch it. The standard for me is about amateur/semi-pro level and I don't watch men at that level, so I don't watch women's football, easy really

What she doesn't seem to understand is that the male footballers aren't paid more because of the amount of effort or work they put in, they get paid more because more people tune in to watch them, which means that advertisers and subsequently TV networks pay the leagues/clubs more money. They generate vastly more money for their employer, so they get paid more by the employer, just like in any other job. If you've got one salesman who brings in 1m quid of sales every month and another who only brings in 10k of business, are you going to value both of those employees the same? Of course not. If the same amount of people watched women's football, then women would get paid the same, but despite attempts from various media outlets to make women's football mainstream, it still remains and probably a always will be a tiny niche sport in terms of TV viewership. It's like saying professional curlers should make the same as PL footballers or something.

Regarding your first point, there's a massive difference between you (who I assume to be just an average bloke) and a professional athlete. Of course a professional weight lifter etc. can lift more weight than someone who doesn't train as much etc. but it's just an undeniable fact that if a man and a woman did equal amounts of training, the man would be miles stronger because men are inherently designed to be more muscular etc. Men are naturally optimized to be athletic whereas women are not.

Does it matter though? That's really my point.......women give birth waay better than men and sometimes (most of the time) have bigger boobs. If you don't like watching womens football, don't watch it, the power of the remote is literally in people's hands*

*unless of course the missus has the remote and then well your fucked, but at least she likes football, so silver linings and all that
