So why do we bother keep trying to qualify for it?

Why care that we’ve won the group?

Why bother going to the games or watching them on TV?

Nobody is saying it’s likely. To say 100% it’s not happening makes me wonder why you bother watching at all? Can’t be fun for you.

Ha ha good one. Jumped to a lot of conclusions there haven’t you.
I enjoy watching spurs very much

Come on Real Madrid have been well below their usual standards this season as have Dortmund. That’s not taking anything away from us, we still beat them both .
If we get an in form Barca, Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern, Man City over 2 legs I wouldn’t fancy our chances to be honest. I’m not sure I fancy our chance over 2 legs against Man U or Chelsea either.
That’s 8 teams so it’s likely we would have to beat a least 3 of these to win it. I would love to be wrong but it’s not happening folks

It's a cup comp and anything can happen, you can't just dismiss out of hand just because you think it's unlikely, cup matches a lot of factors are involved and you need that bit of luck with the draw.

And that was my whole point from the start.
I’m not saying it’s impossible but common sense and clear unbiased thinking makes it a likely as a chimpanzee writing a novel

We haven't even hit top form either though and we just won the group relatively easily.
With our defence and Kane, Son, Eriksen and Dele all hitting the level of form of last season post Xmas and you still think we've zero chance?
I don't think we'll win it but it's not like we're not potentially good enough to beat anyone left in it over two legs. There is no supreme side this year. PSG look scary but I still think their defence isn't great and they've still got a lot to prove before I'm gonna call them unbeatable.

I've mentioned this before but I'm teaching someone in the game who had connections to one of the big boys and he said that they don't particularly want to face us because we "are very strong".

Make of that what you will.

It doesn't, it just makes it unpredictable, no way you can say we're not gonna win the CL, just like you would shoot someone down for saying we will definitely win the CL, making an absolute statement about our chances at this stage is redundant.

Who is sitting on a yellow right now?

I would not play any of them against APOEL.

ETA - Never mind - just did a quick look, nobody is in danger of a suspension right now. Dier, Winks, Aurier, and Dembele each have 1 yellow.

I think Vertonghen is clear, as he has received 2 yellows, but in one match, and served his suspension.

If that Liverpool team could win it in 2005, and that Chelsea team in 2012, we can win it this season...with some good fortune.

I think our defence and Harry Kane give us a punchers chance. We very rarely get thumped like say a Liverpool do. As long as you can stay in games. With Kane up top you always have a chance. Yes unlikely but by no means impossible.

I agree, it's not impossible. However, I am worried, because there seems to be a blueprint way of defeating us. Render possession, stay tight, and wait for a mistake, and over 90 minutes, that will defeat us. It's a particularly worrying thing going into the knock out stages.

The only team that would sit back defensively and not give us any opportunities would be Utd and Juventus, obviously we can't draw Utd next round so just hope to avoid Juve.

It’s fine margins for sure. Of our 3 losses this season I’d say NLD was only one you could say we deserved to lose. And even that was tipped by a dodgy ref. On another day that could easily have been 0-0.It’s very rare we are completely outclassed in game. Last time was probably Liverpool away last season. But there’s at least 4 examples of unexpected teams winning CL this century. Porto Liverpool inter chelsea. So that’s basically a 25% chance.

As it stands we're likely to be drawn against one of:
  • Juventus - Rather avoid
  • Bayern Munich - Rather avoid
  • Napoli / Shaktar - Dangerous but could play into our hands
  • Roma - Confident we'd get past them
  • Sevilla - Confident we'd get past them
  • Basel - Potential banana skin as too similar to last season
  • Porto / RB Leipzig - Confident we'd get past them

Only ones I'd like to avoid are Juve, Bayern and Basel. All the others will be decent games.

Don't understand the logic with Basel - we are a different animal in Europe to last year's campaign and judging by those potential ties, then Basel would likely represent the best draw for us.

I'd also rather play Juventus than Napoli personally

Woooha, you arrived at 25% chance for winning CL? :wideyed:

I think there are plenty of similarities between the match vs Chelsea, United and Arsenal. It's not really about sitting back defensively, it's more about cruise control to wait out our errors. To a degree, I think we deserved a loss in all those matches, because we simply weren't up to the task. All I'm saying is that way of playing, that pattern that those three matches follows, it makes me worried because it's too much of a painting by numbers way to defeat us.
