He is only 21 he will have blips, after the last 2 seasons surely he is allowed that no? Poch clearly hoping he will improve and hasn't dropped him as at his age it could effect him worse in the long run.

Certainly when we are only considering Son and Alli for those forward positions, you have to say Son's not been entirely fairly treated in relation to Alli.

But in fairness to Alli, I do think, despite his carelessness and fucking around, he generally does bring a bit more as an overall package to the team most days. I can understand there being a slight bias tilt toward Alli, but I don't think it's been slight often, I think Alli definitely should have been dropped for Son, in forward positions earlier this season, if for no other reason than to rest him, and send him the message that mediocrity and lethargy is not acceptable, because the one thing Son always brings is energy and zip.

It's a squad game.
Players are not dropped.
They are sequentially re-positioned.

If only we had both of them :(

Dele scored 18 league goals last year, at 20 years old. He has a goal in less than every other game this season, in all competitions.

Bring back Chadli, I say.

I'll start reading this in 2 days time, and then bump the thread to tell you when I'm halfway through.

Alli and (a fit) Rose work better as a team than Alli and Davies imo.
He has been more isolated this last year as it takes Davies a little longer to get forward.
I think this has damaged his game and stats.

Alli was brilliant when he dropped deeper as he had more space and had players closer to him to interact with. But he plays higher up for both tactical reasons and that I suspect he fancies himself as a attacker and we got to keep him happy or else.

Another reason why we shouldn't have sold Walker.

Everyone was used to the self-absorbed moans about Walker so it was tolerable but now Dele '18 league goals last season' Alli is getting the same boring selective stat treatment.. What fun.

OK, apologies to all. That OP was a very shoddy bit of work, done in a hurry, originally intended just as a reply in the ratings thread, then thought I'd stretch it out and give us all something to moan about, Alli haters could moan about Alli, Alli hater haters could moan about the....er.....Alli haters. But in my haste I fucked it all up, including the conclusion, drawn wrongly based on incorrect data posted and incorrect reading of that data.

Here is how it should have been posted, but let me make something clear. I don't hate Alli. I think we are lucky to have him. As well as goals and assists he also brings clever movement, a good football intuition, creative intent, character, personality, etc etc.

But I do not think it is a simple he's brilliant/shit conundrum. I think because he can be brilliant and quite shit all at the same time, it creates a bit of a dilemma. And that dilemma is polarised when he's not producing those moments of quality and productivity with regular frequency.

I don't believe any player is beyond rotating and resting (choosing words cleverly so as not to ignite more hater hating) when they are consistently not performing well, as long as there are viable alternatives. There are also times when even the best players need a kick up the arse IMO. But having looked again at the bare stats (which, in this simplified form will never tell a whole story) it's not black and white as to whether Alli is having a dip of form.

Another look at the stats, as they should have been posted makes the previous conclusion invalid. All aspects of Alli's creative game clearly aren't down on last season. The big ones - goals/assists - are down heavily (50%), but the other stuff like key passes and chances created is up by around 20%.

Anyway, here are the stats as they should have read:

As we can see, Son and Alli are pretty much neck and neck for goals/assists per minute on the pitch.

Here is Alli's stats compared to last season:

I have chucked in some of the other stats for context and completeness, but they don't really support any theory. Defensively he's tackling much less but intercepting more. No idea what that tells us really. Take ons are similar.

So, to summerise, this was a massive fucking waste of my time which has fundamentally not highlighted anything that we didn't all already know. Alli's not entirely shit this year, but is a bit less productive.

As you were.

This is an interesting point.
It's what I've always said about Eriksen.
He doesn't tackle but cuts off the lines of attack covering the angles.
If Dele is starting to do this I'm guessing he got it from Christian.

Don't close it mods now we've got him on the run.

son plays well, son stays in team, son plays bad, son dropped.

alli plays well, alli stays in team, alli plays bad, alli stays in team.

i don't have a problem with alli but i do have an issue with how he gets favourable treatment over son who is no less productive or no less influential to this team. both bring tangible output and both can be wasteful. alli brings strength and aggression, son brings pace and dynamism ... yet one is treated like a prince and the other a pauper.

Great post
