Thankfully, some of the Villa fans think he’s been their best player this season so far.

At the age of 20, it is only natural that he will be a bit inconsistent.

Not all bad reviews:

I'm confused by the posts on here. Davis aside he is the best young player I've seen at Villa Park for a while He has been a little inconsistent but generally I think he has done well. He has been no more inconsistent than any other Villa player in my opinion. Is he getting so much stick because he is not our player?

Agreed. I suspect our renewed level of expectation is the reason. I know I've certainly done the same with Grealish these last few years.

Come on, he is 20 years old. Which 20-year old performs consistantly? Is was the same with for example Bale and Ronaldo at that age.

Then why play him and develop him for Spurs, instead of giving our own players time on the pitch. Im sure O'hare would give us exactly the same as I have seen from Onomah

Are you? I'm not.

If Villa get promoted i wonder if we'd give him another year loan. Might depend on what happens with Dembele i guess.

I wonder how successful this season has been for Josh. If there was one thing he was needing to improve upon it was his discipline; both positional and control of possession. I think that is why he was never trusted in the heart of our midfield but was played on the fringes. It's an odd criticism to make of someone who has come to prominence through the youth system as a DM/CM but I guess he could be more of a risk taker where he was significantly better than his opposition.

He's getting plenty of game time at Villa but seems to be played in advanced positions. He's doing well and proving to be effective at it at that level but is there any point if that isn't what he needs to be doing to break into our first team?

I can't help but feeling that he would be better placed with a manager in need of a DM who is famed for their strategic discipline. For me that would be Benitez or Hodgson.

On the other hand, could this experience be showing us that he's just not a good fit for a Pochettino team. To play CM in this team you must be able to protect the ball and be prepared to press. If you can distribute (winks), carry the ball (sissoko, dembele), Tackle (Dembele, Dier) then that's great but retention and retraction are the fundamentals.

It couldn't have been more obvious how important this is when Alli failed to protect the ball against WBA and Rondon scored. That's why he's not a CM and Winks is. Winks would have dived on the ball or the player rather than waft a hopeful foot at it. I suspect that Josh is conditioned to be the latter because he's not asked to do more at Villa.

Can Josh evolve at Villa? Can Josh evolve?

I think they are valid questions, but what disappoints me is that Poch has been happy to play people like Alli and Sissoko as CM/8's in the 3CM system this season, neither of whom can shield a ball and have the control technique of 8yo's wearing clown boots -and Alli is crap at pressing - yet wouldn't even give Onomah games there in pre season friendlies.

I fear for Onomah's future with us to be honest.

Been dreadful tonight. Honestly I just don’t think he will ever be good enough for us. Very frustrating but just doesn’t offer enough.

Wouldn't rule him out just yet. Been quality in some games and still young and lots to learn.

Villa are such a bad watch they cant string any passes together and Josh isnt exactly working the hardest to get onto the ball.

Just goes missing too much imo. Don’t really like his body language either. Just seems to stroll around most of the time. Can’t compare his attitude to say winks or Skipp.

People wants us to start Onomah just mainly because Sissoko is shite

Totally irrelevant, but it is really shocking Hutton still playing for Villa after we sell him to them long time ago

He’s Basically in a straight fight with winks TOB Skipp. Can only see him coming 4 th in that. And that’s before we buy anyone.

his body shape doesnt bother me, that's just his languid style. I have a problem with how he its working hard enough off the ball to make himself available. Very lazy in recieving the ball allowing it to be nicked too often.

I'll post here what I said in his loan thread:

Can’t imagine Josh has had many worse games so far than this.

Barely getting the ball, when he is giving it away, jogging about in no mans land between the forwards and midfield.

Added to that he has the lowest passing accuracy of any Villa outfield player this half, a whopping 42.9%. He looks nowhere near Sissoko on this showing to me.
