Apparently a girl in a bar said to Darren Gough "you look like a fat Darren Gough" to which Swann laughed. Goughie saw him in the urinals later that night and decked him. There is probably more to it by the sounds of it and the culmination of Swann just getting under his skin, over a sustained period after which he snapped.

Its been engrossing stuff today - no doubt they will chuck the kitchen sink at Root tomorrow. A good start would be for Woakes to crash them around for 40 or so and Bairstow get a 50 then we will be in with a chance. My optimism kills me sometimes!.

176-4.

It's the hope that gets you.
Which is essentially 176-5ish when you factor in Woakes is at the crease. Obviously he might go on to post a useful 25 and obviously he is a nightwatchman protecting a more established batsman, but sport is all about momentum.

were it 176-2 I would say very much game on, but Australia only need 2 quick wickets and I think we collapse form there.

Woakes averages 35 in first class cricket and has 9 first class hundreds. He is no mug with the bat.

im not too sure tbh, I think it was in Goughs book...although it might be in the half of Swanns book that you didn't read!

I would have carried on reading if I knew Swann was going to get a slap

Yes but not in a test match.
I would be very happy if he got 35 though!

He averages 30 in test cricket. I am pretty sure both Trescothick and Vaughan had similar first class averages to woakes when they came into the Test side.

I was referring to the 100's, but in principle we agree. I just think against Cummings etc... we should consider 30+ a very handy score, but I am not hopeful at this stage.

Sorry about that, I was quite abrupt there. Australia are still the favourites but I think the longer we can take it, the more nervous the aussies will be. If we can get a 50 partnership in the first two hours without losing a wicket (a big ask I know!) then we have a good chance.

Think it all depends on how we do in the session before night falls, easier said than done i know but the time is there. 2/3 an over until dinner, then see where we are. SS is proper under the pump though, lose this and he will get slaughtered. There press/media can be worse than ours at times. Glad he's used all his reviews, that was a farce !!

A win for us would be a fantastic achievement and would give the team untold confidence. Just wish they could be a bit nastier at times.

They get another 2 with the new ball in 18 overs time, don't they? Or doesn't that apply in this match?

If we get to the final session we'll most likely be pretty much there won't we? 60 odd overs at 2.5 an over would only leave us needing another 20 or so. I think it'll all come down to whether we can see off the second new ball in 18 overs time. My guess is we won't and it'll be pretty much done by the end of the 1st session. Even if that happens at least we made a game of it which seemed unthinkable about 30 hours ago.

Good idea to promote Woakes to NWM, as we need our RH's to take as much of the strike from Lyon as possible,

Important first hour tomorrow, but we have given ourselves a great chance, and restored a lot of pride after the first 6 days of the Ashes.

Might actually get up to watch live tomorrow...

I have a feeling we will lose a few early wickets then the new ball will finish us off in the first session.
But if we only lose 1/2 in the first session and root is still there, it’s game on.
The longer we keep them at bay the more frustrated they will get, like they did today for a bit.

One thing's for sure, they'll come out firing, so first hour is massive. Keep them at bay and we have a chance, Woakes can frustrate them and score at a decent rate too, would be tempted to promoted Bairstow above Ali for the sake of having two RHB's at the crease.

Root has got this ;)

It's right to say that this first hour is key. If Woakes and Root can stay there until the new ball England have a massive chance, Alli and Bairstow are at their best trying to finish a game and something like 120 needed with five wickets in hand would be game on

My heart wants us to win it, but my head says we'll implode in the first few overs. It'll be a terrific win if we can get it over the line. Come on England!
