Maybe but if we're honest, all 4 of them are flawed in some way. Trippier isn't getting any faster or much stronger and he also doesn't tend to go past his man or even try to. Aurier is a bit raw from a footballing perspective but he has all the other attributes to be the better right back and with Poch's coaching he can become as good on the footballing side, if a bit different, e.g. he'll unlikey ever cross as well as Trippier.

Rose was clearly the better LB over Davies but his injury has knocked him back significantly. Davies has also improved massively but he will always lack agility and speed and that is important both in our system and against speedy wingers like Sterling and Sane.

I fully agree that Trippier and Davies are the number 1's right now but it wasn't that long ago that they were both the backups and Poch has proven he can coach players up.

I believe Aurier and Rose are the better fit for this particular game but Poch knows far more than I do so whatever picks will most likely be correct.
The only games Rose and Aurier are fit for right now in my opinion are the ones that require Trips and Davies to be rested.

If Aurier meets his potential and Rose gets back to his best, I can see them winning those spots, but as it stands, anyone picking them for this game is doing so with very rose tinted glasses.

Rose has put in some decent work lately, but I think in his mind, he is trying to force his way into being perceived as a midfielder, something he constantly did also pre-Poch. To me, Davies is the more composed and steady player with the best understanding of the role. That's why I'd start him.
For Trippier and Aurier, I like Aurier, I think he is showing great potential. I can't fault him yet from an overall perspective. However, Trippier just hardly messes up, and he can provide the odd assist. Aurier is a beast, Trippier is more subtle. It's a hard choice, but probably Trippier edges it for now.

Fair enough. For the record I genuinely don't have a preference for any one over the other so there's no rose tinted glasses on me. I was thinking more stylistically than anything but as I say, I'm certainly no tactical genuis like old BC :cautious: so what do I know.

Sit deep and play on the counter like Real Madrid away.
I'd play Davies in a back 3 and Rose.
I'm hardly ever right though.

With Trippier and Davies I also think we're more likely to keep 11 on the pitch. Aurier is too quick to dive in and Danny Rose seems likely to blow a fuse any time. Sane and Sterling could bring the worst out of both of them.

Such a shame that Sanchez and Alderweireld are not available for this one as it would be a fantastic game if both sides at full strength!

I think Poch's selection against Brighton has shown his hand a little ... I am expecting this team.

Trippier, Davies, Dele, Dembele all to come into the starting line up.

Lloris
Trippier Dier Vertonghen Davies
Dembele Winks
Dele Eriksen Son
Kane

Subs: Vorm, Rose, Aurier, Hoyth, Sissoko, Lamela, Llorente
As Poch has shown with a 4-2-3-1 and a high press against Man CIty, they are beatable, so I'd like to see Lamela included to the team to give us that extra pressing aggression
Slight alteration, dele in the middle and not high press.

Also I suggest Sissoko in as we need defensive cover for our full backs.we can't play high press as this play into city counter attack which is deadly.

We need to shit back and sock the pressure and hit them on the break. Happy with tripper and Davis as we need defensive stability. No doubt rose would have offered pace going forward however I doubt we will be doing a lot of that.

This has to be a scrap book from the Real Madrid game.

It's a shame that we don't have our defence as I think 3 at the back would be useful against City, but with Sanchez and Toby out, I'd just fucking go for it.

Attack attack attack. It's effectively a free hit with the way City are playing, so let's just do what we can to get at a defence that hasn't been tested much this season and has come unstuck when it has been tested.

Lloris

Aurier Dier Vertonghen Davies

Winks Dembele

Dele Eriksen

Son Kane

Subs: Vorm, Foyth, Trippier, Rose, Lamela, Llorente, Sissoko

Full backs look vulnerable with no wide player in front of them to me. City can double up on Aurier and Davies.

I do worry about Trippier against Sane, or Sterling. No defensive midfielder against De Bruyne, Silva...

Oh god.

Genuinely I'm not sure there's a way you particularly shut down this City team.

I don't think a defensive midfielder particularly helps. If you shut out De Bruyne they've still got Silva(s) to create things and you can't shut them all down. Their pace means whoever you play at full back is going to be vulnerable, and they've got two brilliant strikers who can hurt you in a number of ways.

So with all that in mind, just go toe to toe with them and see how it goes.

Perhaps the one concession I'd make is to play Lamela instead of Dele as that additional work-rate will be useful, but, to sum up....

433 looks better to me. I'd have Sissoko in on the right to help with Sane with Dembele and Winks in MF. I'd leave Dele out for starters since his propensity to fuck about and cough up possession could cost us big time. Lamela, Eriksen and Son supporting Kane up top so that Eriksen can drop deeper if needed. Doesn't need to be pretty and a point would be a great result..

Feel that he will make only one against the grain
selection in Rose. Ali has had his little shaker upperer.
He will go four at the back if only because Foyth and Davies
haven't played there enough this season. Rose in for his athletism
if anything....Trippier over Aurier because he has better discipline

Wrong me if I'm right, but has Pochettino ever rotated only one FB when all 4 have been fit to play?

Has to be a similar adoption to how we played against Real Madrid, Dortmund, hell even Liverpool - go with 3 at the back, even though Sanchez is out, we need a back 5 with the emphasis of countering at pace.

Still at odds over the middle of the park - Winks despite not having his greatest game midweek still needs to definitely start but then this is very much likely a game where it completely bypasses Dembele who cannot keep up with the frenetic pace albeit still a preference to Sissoko.

Son deserves to start this not only through form but for his prowess on the counter which means Alli can warm the bench again - does mean we have some interesting options should Poch need to switch it around.

ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man City weakness is their back 4 - tomorrow they will most likely play Walker, Otamendi, Mangala, Danillo/Delph
We cannot out pass them by going toe to toe with them.

We can approach this in 2 ways
a) Set up like we did against Dortmund at Wembley. 10 men in own half & us playing counter. Problem is we lost Toby & Sanchez and have no Wanyama.

b) Stick two forwards to Otamendi & Mangala. I would play Kane & Llorente. When we have the ball, go long bypass their midfield. But when going long, stretch their defense by hitting it long to the sides. This means Walker & Delph could get caught upfield or they have to track back to help out their CBs.

The main advantage we have over City is we are a physical side. So, Make it a physical game.
United tried this way - problem was Lukaku was so bad holding up & linking play. Kane can do this so better.

I had a change of mind.
My new XI : 4-3-1-2

Lloris
Trippier, Dier, Jan, Davies
Eriksen, Dembele, Dele
Son
Kane, Llorente
