Players are always going to leave. Unless we start winning regular titles or get bought by a country (city/psg) we will sell players. All we can do is get the best price and use that money to strengthen.
Wembley has been a bit of a knock and aurier has taken time to settle but him and sanchez for the price of walker in the long term will probably be good business.

Unfortunately long term isn't what football fans, chairmen or sponsors are generally too interested in. That's why there is such a high turnover in managers.

And therein lies the problem with selling key first team players. Whether they want to leave/can't match their wages/don't want to keep an unhappy player/insert appropriate argument here.

We suddenly find ourselves having to sign replacements in defence, where imo CM, AM and possibly forward are the areas needed to get this squad in a position to win major honours ( in addition to keeping key players). There's no way we're going to do all that, so we're continually behind the eight ball.

Sounds depressing, but I really think the previous 2 seasons we missed our time with a lot of the big guns underperforming or in transition before they can throw shit loads of money at it.

Sanchez is the replacement imo, that’s the way we should do business, agree with a lot of that last paragraph.

I know we’ve done some good business over the last few years but to keep up with the clubs around us we need to be the best, near perfect in this regard, janssen, sissoko and gkn all needed to have greater impacts than they did. It may be asking a lot but it’s the only way I can see us keeping pace, that and successfully integrating more of our academy, we’ve very little, if any room for error

Great as he is, with 2.5 years left on his deal (1.5 plus extension in our favour) we are either losing him at 31 for free, or at 30 for £25m, and that’s in 18 months time IF the clause rumours are true.

Love him though I do, it’s not a desperate situation. By the time he’s off in any of these circumstances he’ll be on the decline going by average centre back longevity and Sanchez will be either 2 or 3 years premiership experienced. If we’ve offered him a higher wage, approaching or in the £100k region, and he’s wanting an amount we just aren’t able to pay, let him run it down. He’s a very good centre back, he’s very professional and he will continue performing to a high standard. I’d rather lose him for free in July 2020 than for a huge few this coming summer.

If we're able to take a £25m hit to keep him for one extra season, it's a shame we aren't also able to take a offer him a 4-year £150k deal, as this is only an additional spend of £16.64m (less than the £25m and far less than a half-decent replacement would cost).
The problem is that if one player gets a big pay-rise as a result of digging his heals in, the rest of the squad would do the same. For example, it would be understandable for Vertonghen to demand similar pay to Alderweireld.

Tbh in the current market most of our best players deserve around £150k pw certainly over £100k, Kane’s up there with the best of the world bar Messi and ronaldo

We may have the same situation with alli and Sanchez being sounded out in the next year or two it's the way of the world.

So if replacing Toby does become necessary, who do we all think might fit the bill? I rate Wharton at Blackburn, he's a left footer, but by no means PL ready. I also like the Austrian Hinteregger, but again, probably not able to step straight in. Lascelles from Newcastle or Gibson from Middlesbrough might be better options.
How about de Ligt from Ajax ?

Not that they would ever sell to us but I'd take Zouma.

I think it’s more pertinent with the older players, as they want that big contract and trophies

Give Sánchez a year to settle into the prem. if you are going to lose a top defender would you not prefer his replacement to be already settled into the club?
If it's possible, but I wouldn't us to lose out on getting the highest fee we can get either.

Walker is on £170k a week basic, plus add ons/bonuses, at City.

I get the bonuses, but there are varying newspaper reports saying he earns anything between £130k - £150 Mail/Mirror.

Not to say that your wrong, just not seen the £170k figure as of yet.

That your assumption that rm and bm will be in for him might not be accurate.

I’ve not assumed anything, think that was someone else, but still don’t get why where he was 3 years ago is relevant to the price of fish.

Why is everyone talking about fucking wage structure again? It's such a red herring

We've been told numerous times this disagreement is about the release clause not wages

Also people acting like Levy won't be doing everything possible to keep Toby. I can't understand this idea that Levy is secretly here to destroy everything we do ffs

How is it a red herring ? If the disagreement is about release clause this is just a proxy for wages, why do you want a release clause if not to be able to jump ship to earn higher wages ?

Whilst that may be true, I honestly think the issue is more that a handful of clubs are splashing out over-inflated wages than us underpaying. If you look at the individual wages of rival teams, there is a mixture of:
  • Big name signings on big wages (we don't sign these "big names" so don't find ourselves negotiating against rival suitors in quite the same way).
  • Long-standing squad members on high wages, inflated in line with big name signings.
  • Deadwood on inflated wages, who can't be sold on because no one is willing to match their current salary (if the high wages weren't justified, we probably would have passed on signing them)
  • Very good players on sustainable wages (comparable to the majority of our squad).
By being more reserved in the transfer market, we have fewer "big names". As a result of this, we don't have to keep increasing the wages of other key players to match our latest signings and we also don't have as many fringe players on top wages. That leaves us with a squad full of players on sustainable wages.
Obviously there are exceptions (Sissoko and before that Adebayour), but the rarity of these exceptions has allowed Levy to manage the rest of the wage budget without unrest.

Maybe he wants a medal before he retires.
Exactly, the fact he'd probably get a pretty big pay rise as well is just a very convenient side effect from his point of view.
I think he won La Liga with Atletico but wasn't in the side much, so how much that medal actually means to him is arguable.
