What Trix outlines is really sensible and seems to be the mantra at the start of each window. We have long term targets and won’t be deflected if we can’t get them. All good until we go and buy Sissoko and then you start to question whether we really have a “philosophy” or just buy what’s available within our price range.
That was one signing, hardly something we do regularly is it?

Njie, GKN and even Llorente, were these long term targets ?
No, they were punts, like Dele, some come off, some don't.
Llorente was a proven striker at the highest level available for not a lot of money.
Why are you struggling with this concept?

Two French boys had been watched for ages.Young kids from a foreign league some work out some don't. Can you not remember the GKN deal taking the best part of two months to sort out?

I would sitting out the CL squad list may have a bearing on things for this month. Presumably we will want Coco in the side.

Getting a deal done for the summer for sessegnon and possibly some kind of understanding with palace for Zaha would be great business. Barkley as a possible long term replacement for Dembele either for cheap in Jan or free at the end of the season would be the cherry on top.

It's all a bit FM but if you think we could offload GKN, Janssen, Sissoko, Maybe Llorente you'd think that would bring in around £60m at least in the summer.

We don’t need to sign anyone this month but, for God’s sake, can we please sort out some early deals ahead of the summer?

The manager has said it now pretty publically and we need to keep him happy and stop the silly games. The market has moved on. What always seems like a lot of money at the start of the summer suddenly becomes absolutely out of reach by August 31.

Identify the players now, do the deals and announce them early.

It's a bit like buying a house though isn't it. People won't move out until they've got their own place to go to. Teams who sell want their replacements tied up and any hiccup in the chain can bring the whole lot down.

Yes that’s fine but we’ve heard countless accounts of failures to obtain the manager’s primary targets due to failing to agree a transfer fee with the player’s club.

Agreeing personal terms with a player is pretty pointless if we were never going to agree a fee.

That's the order things are done, you don't waste time haggling with a club just to find out you can't get near the players wage demands.
When was the last time you heard of a transfer failing because personal terms couldn't be agreed?
It just doesn't happen anymore because if a club's got to the point where they're negotiating a fee with a club, they already know what the player wants and are happy to pay it.

As far as incomings are concerned, I'm still hearing Barkley is not likely to happen(for reasons I have already posted) although we are still keen on him as a player.

Good to start the new year with a new thread.
I don't want to chew the cabbage twice, if Trix has already posted elsewhere. But for those of us who do not follow as closely, could someone point me to the past postings about Barkley?

I wasn’t saying we shouldn’t agree personal terms. It just seems like we have been so far behind the valuations when it comes to the transfer fee that we need to put in a lot more work in that area, earlier.

Not really sure what more 'work' can be done though...are you suggesting going after cheaper options sooner?

If we know we are only prepared to offer a maximum of, say, £30m for Wilfried Zaha and Palace are clear that they’d only consider offers north of £50m, we’re wasting our time aren’t we?

Better to prioritise another top target than drag out a negotiation that’s never going to happen because we’re too far apart.

Tbh I'd have absolutely no idea, not having taken part in or concluded any deals like this personally.
What I would wager is that it's nowhere near as simple as fans make it out to be.

Thanks for the info Trix. It ties in nicely with what Poch was saying about our targets recently.
