Conte calling Barkley a "good investment" doesn't strike me as a manager that wants him. Expect them to sell within 2 years at a huge profit

Massive profit in 2 years?? Im guessing he will be seeing similar gametime to Drinkwater...

Like they did with Marko Marin? Nobody will have the faintest idea who Ross Barkley is in 2 years time.

Conte knows a good investment when he sees one.

Don’t know why we are surprised Spurs never act like a big club. If Barkley was being offered for a £1 we would strill try and drive the price down. I’m on a football whatsapp Group with friends who support various clubs and everyone expects Spurs to return to 5th 6th within a season or two. We never invest properly or show intent totally deflated... feels like we peaked last season to be honest..

In all fairness, are we not investing towards a billion pounds for the new stadium?

Intrigued by the non injury related reason we backed away. I have no insights what so ever in football transfers, is it possible he made demands about playing time or position that we didn't want to promise him? Unless of course there are economical reasons.

Doubt it. Pretty sure Chelsea wouldn’t offer him anything related to playing time as I can’t see him getting much.

Fair enough we’re walking away but still interesting that Chelsea don’t seem to have a problem with this non injury related reason but we do.

Actually no we aren’t, great PR from Levy but we are spending £450m on the stadium, the other £550m is being spent on the hotel and house development. Even with the £450m I would think that about £50-100m is due to the NFL dimension to the stadium, the cost of the retractable pitch and associated works is huge.

The owners aren’t funding the stadium, they are going to rely on naming rights and securitisation of gate receipts, which will be the highest in the country. I’m not saying they have any requirement to put their hands in the pocket but let’s not laud them for investing anything other than what is effectively our money as the customers of the business.

I will go out on a limb here and say that the benevolent / forgiving mood among large parts of the fanbase with respect to Levy/ENIC will change dramatically when season ticket renewals come out and people see the price hikes. By way of example the announced prices for the 6,000 premium seats are 50-75% higher than at The Emirates, if anyone thinks that the premium seats will be subsidising the regular seats then dream on, i’ll bet anyone that our regular seats will be the most expensive in the country.

If I were Barkley and I'd pulled out of a move to Chelsea in the summer, because we told him we wanted him, I'd be really really angry at us for the way we've strung him along. If he does now go to Chelsea, he will bust a gut every time he faces us, just to stick it up us and prove a point.
And probably pull his hammy

So this £billion thing how much of it is the actual stadium and how much of it is flats/hotels etc etc.. which will basically pay for themselves.. were we not told that it would not impact player purchases as the budget was separate.

Even if we are restricted financially can you really expect to win things if the net spend has been basically zero every season for the last dacade. With the rise in TV Money beyond expectation over the last five years one could expect that we should be sitting on at least £150 million anyway as we spend so little. I also understand we have better interest rate terms than when Arsenal took out their loan out so even if it is for more money it will cost much less in yearly loan payments.

ENIC have been incharge for over 15 years is 2 League Cups really good enough?

I am not particularly bothered about Barkley but annoyed we make stupid decisions only to panic buy at the end of Windows. Case on point Sissoko Janssen Lorrente

Perhaps developments with another player advanced. Therefore Poch had a choice sign a player who is only just returning from a serious injury or wait and sign someone similar.

I suspect its more likely he didn't think the player would be up so speed for this season so opted against bringing him in now.

Lets just hope that if he is promised another midfielder that Levy delivers and brings that player in. If he doesn't the manager isn't going to be happy. Trouble is, I suspect we won't get that player, we usually don't.

How are you still not understanding, when it has been laid out for you again and again...

Trix: Its injury related

Herc: Its injury related, but theres a bit more to it which cant currently be in the public domain.

I'm not sure what you want 'fleshing out?' its there in black-and-white

Yeah, that’s what I said so not sure what the point is of you repeating what I said. Tiger was the one who said RB was injury related. I just pointed out there was more to it, supposedly

Hmmm.. I don't get this whole attitude with regards to the Barkley situation at all. It just seems to me like another balls up in the transfer window.

It was Tom Collomosse who originally broke the story last December ( https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/fo...o-pochettino-looks-to-get-best-a3420031.html@ ). A whole year ago..

Pochettino had obviously identified him a long time ago as a key player he would like. Last January he had 18mths on his contract, and time was ticking in our favour. OK, so it's hard to get value for money for a player then, so we waited..

The summer window arrived, by which time we would have had another 6mths to evaluate the player, spoken properly to his people, knowing that he had only a year left with bargaining power on our side. Yet apparently we didn't make a bid at all! Had we have signed Barkley earlier on in the summer he may have avoided his hamstring injury altogether and been playing for us by now, however we dilly dallied and have now missed out on another key Poch target to add to Zaha, Schneiderlin, Berahino et al. The only way this could be justified is that he had sustained a serious injury BEFORE the summer window opened. Blame injuries, blame wages, blames inflated prices, blame what you like, we've missed out again.

Pochettino has recently said that waiting to do business towards the end of the window has hurt us. He's shown he's not happy with the way we're handling these situations, which is not at all good. We must approach these windows being more prepared and strike whilst the iron is hot to secure targets that the boss really want soon if we want our manager to hang around.

PS - I don't get the fact that people were getting hot under the collar when a few posters starting comparing Sissoko to Barkley.. They are both footballers aren't they!?! Hardly comparing apples to oranges is it! Then came this "we don't see him in training" line. Strange, but I was under the impression that players train so they can perform in matches, not the other way around!

I'm not best pleased at ENIC or Levy at the moment, but the bold part above and most of the post is basically describing exactly what an investment is. You invest expecting a return. I'm not saying the club is doing it out of the kindness of its heart.

Moussa Sissoko is many things. A footballer he is not. And that is precisely the problem. We expect him to be a footballer. Its not his fault. He's at the wrong club at the wrong time. It is Poch's fault that he continues to not only play him, but start him!

Then don't complain afterwards if players choose other teams over us.
This time we had a player who chose us over money, and we left him hanging.

I don't. We weren't willing to take the risk on him it seems. Deals often collapse. I'm sure Barkley realises this, he's an adult. Us not signing Ross Barkley isn't the end of the world.
