Wanyama certainly is like a new signing for 2nd half of season, so will be Toby after a long injury layoff. Its in defense we have gone back from last season. I generally agree with you on transfer front. We do the bare minimum in summer & in winter window we dont even do that. While we can all shout & scream about it, history suggests we wont do anything unfortunately.

All ITKs till now, also singing same tune - no big transfer now. Even the ITK talks about summer moves....We got to bite the bullet and endure the pain till summer. Unless some useless club tries to buy Sissoko this window, I cant see any incoming

I agree, and there is enough in our squad to achieve our goals even if there is a quiet window. I guess the problem is this window is an opportunity to improve and it's annoying as a fan when the club doesn't try and use it to it's advantage!

The other problem is that we are always seemingly turning deals down in favour of chasing targets that never pan out. I hope Herc is right and this summer is different, it's a pivotal one.

This is what @Hercules has previously said on this situation

“RS, we have verbal agreement in place for summer. We want to deal now, and take him, with his brother staying until summer. Fulham want him (RS) to stay and push for possible play-offs. We want him (if we agree) to train 60-70% of the time with us if we agree such deals. Sess has already met Poch in summer, more than once.”
Then why can't we just sign them now and loan them both back for 6 months?

Better to do that than be inevitably scrambling for a left back on August 31 when Rose leaves. Why not just save ourselves the hassle? If we wait until the summer it just feels like we are asking to get gazumped.

And that extension activates a £20m minimum fee release clause. If VVD is £75m then the best defender in the EPL for the past 3 years is worth significantly more than £20m even with a contract running down.
VVD isn't £75m though. It was exceptional circumstances and there was no other club bidding(plus he only wanted Liverpool and was going through the motions in playing). It's like using the £30m for Sissoko as a standard to value box-to-box midfielders and then demanding £50m for Loftus-Cheeks.

How much do you value another season of having Toby though? We have ready made replacements and I honestly don't think we are desperate for the money so if he isn't going abroad then we just take the hit and keep him for an extra season. He will be 30 by then so I can't imagine he'd be worth a great deal more than £35m anyway.

Big surprise eh?
Summer eh?
Abroad eh?

So that gives us around 7 months or so of frantic guessing and second guessing who this surprise is gonna be.

I like that a few people have mentioned that we want to make a statement this summer. Very interesting to see how it plays out.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure @Archibald&Crooks will keep this forum open right the way through just so everyone can update their guesses...

Brutally honest, I don't care now about signings in the summer.
1) I've heard it too many times before, and I know how large the chance is that it will fall through.
2) We need probably one decisive signing now to stay on the top 4 track and continue the improvement of the last two seasons.
3) If we don't get a CL spot, chances are that the summer can go in various directions in terms of in- and outgoings.

So I'm grateful for the ITK update, but the club isn't exactly throwing me into a frenzy with this idle January shite head approach.

THIS is the best post you'll read in this thread all January.

I am not sure if we are about to go forward as a club or have reached a peak from which we are perhaps already declining. News about contracts for existing players as well at that of transfer targets are long on sentiment and short on substance. Always being 'on the verge' of a breakthrough but never breaking through seems to be the motto of the club these days.

Let's be honest the last few transfer windows have been hardly inspiring. Even when we have thrown a bit of cash around we haven't exactly bought anyone exciting.

If they could just get a bums of seats player I would be happy. Someone a bit special.

Let this please be taken as my opinion, based upon certain information gathered over past months. The club know they have to make a big statement in signings, especially against the uncontrollable rise of citeh and chavs, with mancs doing mancs. Now scoucers are spending, all be it most off sales, makes no difference.

I personally feel DL has convinced all and sundry to back Poch aggressively, on and off the pitch. Poch wants certain types of players to fit in with what he has. You can sign only so many untapped potential; Sanchez and Alli being 2 great examples. But against that you have the Clints and GKN, of this world. You then have VJ, which was 100% all Poch’s doing. Then you have Sissoko, who was again Poch’s doing

I believe our team of scouts does a better job in identifying the right ones. Putting that all together, this summer will be the most critical of our recent history. We will spend big, and have to get it right. We cannot afford any cock-ups, or late signings.

Is it this summer that the EPL transfer window begins to close early?

Seems to me you're suggesting Poch needs to be backed (as I'm sure we'd all agree), but that our scouts do a better job than Poch in picking players.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I'd say Davinson Sanchez was a big and exciting signing personally, or do defenders not count?

That chap from MK Dons turned out to be a bit special didn't he?

The issue has been picking up a Salah/Mane/Sane/Zaha type but that's not to say we haven't improved the squad with transfers. Wanyama was a very good signing last summer, as were Alderweireld and Son in summer 2015. Son is pretty exciting these days I think...

My opinion only, as he wanted both Sissoko and VJ. You cannot blame anyone else for that. Also t the keeper was Gaz was his doing. Personally, though he had a decent MOTM game for us, I’m not sold on him.

I already accepted the noted successes. Sonny was always on our radar before Poch arrived. It just worked out that when he came here, we were pursuing Sonny.

Hopefully he won't have to be used often, even though he earned us a couple of points vs Palace.

For me Son is the only truly successful attacking signing we’ve made for quite a while now and that’s all to do with money and the risk averse nature of our transfer business.

Attacking players cost more, command more wages and often have more interested parties. That’s not a good fit for the way we operate. Obviously some of that is beyond our control, but some of it stems from indecisiveness and being too risk averse imo.

Thanks for the updates much appreciated :)

I really can't see us making signings this summer as it's a world cup year which and I may be wrong gives us about a week before all and sundry are off with there national sides.

Lots of coaches at the euros were not allowing players time off and the window closes early this year unless we are going to go the city route of what's the price ? Ok here's the cheque which will be a first ever

I do agree with this, we struggle to push the boat out with these signings, and it tends to hinge upon money. I'm sure we considered many of the players of that ilk brought over but were never in the race.

By my guess Mane twice, Martial, Willian, Oscar, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Cazorla, Zaha all fall into that bracket.

Kane and Alli were a right result for us.
