Do Spurs need to upgrade on Hugo Lloris?

Hi Guys,

Hugo Lloris used to be part of the elite tier of 'keepers in the Premier League. However, his form has dropped off this season and we've taken a look behind the stats.

"Now, a lot of factors should be taken into account: Alderweireld’s absence is a big blow; Spurs have been without Victor Wanyama; and Davinson Sánchez is still adapting to the rigours of the English top flight.

However, as previously mentioned, Tottenham aren’t poor defensively. Their xGA90 is still just 0.83, so they aren’t conceding many high-quality chances, despite having a number of key players missing. The difference between this season and previous ones is Lloris is conceding ‘softer’ goals."

Time to move on from Lloris?

Cheers,

Sam

I think it's maybe fair that the question is asked after the season he's had but I think he's earned a degree of loyalty from our side and it would be very difficult to find a better keeper anyway.

There's no denying that he's a better keeper than he's shown in recent months though, the RM game aside obviously.

It's an absolutely fair question. Whether we can find a better keeper than him or not is up to the scouts, but given his position as club captain I'd be loathe to commit him to the scrap heap so quickly.

Nope, despite mistakes creeping in he is still playing to a very high level.

We also have had more unstoppable shots against us this season, such as against west ham and Leicester, which do have effect on the frankly flawed exG stat. Particularly as considering Loris is very good at snuffing out chances before they become shots.

Similarly criticizing him for going 'long' more when it is clearly an option that has been underused in the past, with opposition teams finding it easier to box us in, particularly when playing 4 at the back is a strange criticism. I think its a deliberate tactic not Lloris going off key.

Lloris has always had a mistake in him. His foot work isn't the greatest. Replacing him won't be easy.

Like so many of our players, Lloris, Toby, Jan, Moussa, Eriksen, Dele, will only be fully appreciated by some once they've left the club. Not included Harry as he's totally world class so I'd like to think we all know that.

Hugo is a top top keeper that would walk into the first 11 of most clubs in Europe

We need to play more to his strenghts and stop pissing about at the back and passing it back to him, putting him under pressure

No.

/thread.

(EDIT: I'm part way through Poch's book, and it's clear that he has the utmost admiration for Hugo. He says that he almost considers him part of the coaching team, such is his influence.)

Can he make a mistake... yes, does he make me nervous at times... yes, could his distribution be better... yes. Could we find a better all round keeper... no. I'd put him the 3rd best keeper in the Premiership and we couldn't easily replace him.

Had to ignore FW for the longest until I saw the discussion happening in the "Who do we need in January" thread or whatever it was called. Going on that ignore list again. Clickbait to the max.

If he is able to cut out some of the sporadic soft goal that he seems to concede in some of our biggest matches then he'll be back at a top level. I believe he has it in him to reach that level, and think as a keeper the best years are yet to come.
