Was on North Circular today & thought I’d do a quick drive by. Like everyone one I follow the images via the net. I’ll admit the sheer size of the thing was awe inspiring. Was with wife & kids and so sadly unable to stop but it looked huge

I'm a little concerned about the quality of the pitch on those loading trays.

The Houston Texans used to do something similar and it was an absolute mess.
It's been thoroughly tested at the training ground, i'm sure they will have looked at every other example in major stadia around the world to learn from examples where it has been done correctly and incorrectly.
As a former engineer, I wouldnt agree, the amount of times people have messed on big engineering projects which have been great in theory but poor in practice is unbelievable

Of course the systems arent the same, the positive thing about our pitch is that the tray depth is much deeper than the system formerly used at the reliant arena and the trays are a lot bigger with less actual area of contact between the trays

Of course no one knows until the system is in our stadium despite early testing. Its a risk but hopefully it works out.
Don’t be. The Arizona Cardinals have been running a system that’s similar to what ours will be for years now. It’s worked pretty flawlessly and I’m sure it’s been an major inspiration into what we’re doing.
Its not the same system or similar as the Cardinals pitch is one tray, whereas ours is 3 trays

Wouldn't three trays be easier? Less load? Or would width to length ratio play a part?

I have no idea how the whole system works (apart from the little cgi vid). What actually moves it?

As far as the first season goes the pitch is only going to be split once for the NFL, other than that it will stay in place all year, that situation isn't likely to change much in future either I wouldn't have thought, very rare that it will be taken apart.

It is probably more accurate to say that in 2018 the pitch will only be split once for an NFL game. We can host other events between August 2018 and May 2019 which is the duration of the first season in footballing terms (e.g. music concerts, boxing fights, Amercian Football exhibition games, even e-sports!).

As we are allowed up to 16 non-football events per year, if Levy can indeed get £3m per event then that is an extra £48M per year from stadium revenue. In comparison to the "£20M per year" stadium naming rights, which would be seen as guaranteed income for a long period e.g. 20 years = £400M, the additional event revenue is huge as it could bring potentially generate £960M in the same time period!

TOTTENHAM hoping to rake in £3million per event from their new stadium... by hosting eSports tournaments.
Spurs' executive director Donna-Maria Cullen revealed at a business conference last week the club are hoping to bring a wide-array of non-footballing action to their £800m home. ..."The sliding pitch we are installing means we will be able to host more concerts and other events."

True but I bet most of those open air events will take place between mid may and late July.

I think it is much more likely the retractable pitch will be activated more than once next season, which is why I replied to your first post.

Sorry to butt in - would pitch maintenance be easier if retracted? So in very cold/snowy weather

I recall huge rolls of pitch being removed in mid season at Old Trafford many moons ago. But I may have misremembered

That's one for the horticulturists among us! Personally I doubt it. We rarely get that type of weather in London (heavy snow). The most important thing for a grass pitch is sunlight, so I suspect they would want to keep it out whenever possible.

Will be interesting to see how they go about it, given the advancements in technology in these areas. Most clubs are using lighting systems already, and it could be that having a system we have full control over could be more beneficial than leaving it out.

I'm sure I read at some point that the technology involved in keeping the pitch in shape whilst in retracted mode is so advanced that it actually means the pitch maintains a higher quality when retracted than when left out in the natural light.

So they may decide to retract it regularly between games if the cost of doing so isn't too high.

On the plans posted in this thread there is definitely a marked space in front of the north stand for lamp array storage which can only really be for grass maintenance, but it would be fairly easy(I actually can’t say how easy) to put lamps above the retracted pitch in the south stand. So the pitch slides away and into its envelope and inside that space the temperature can be controlled.

I have no idea about any of this. I’ve just looked at the tray construction, tracks and the rest on the webcams. There’s no way to see under the south stand to see if the trays have even been placed yet onto tracking

I'm pretty sure there will have to be lamps in the storage area for the pitch. It will probably look like a massive marijuana cultivation den!

We already have huge lamp arrays that crawl across the pitch in low light conditions. it seems a no brainer that the same type of equipment will be installed both in the storage area for the pitch and available on rollers in the same way we currently have.

We used the lighting systems at WHL. I remember seeing them when on a tour last February

I've got to admit the idea of a retractable pitch seemed like an incredible idea when I first heard it, but I caught ten minutes of Thunderbirds at the weekend and they've been doing that shit on Tracey Island for years!

They don't have a microbrewery or cheese room though. Amateurs.
